Book excerpt: The general purpose with which this book has been written is sufficiently indicated by its title. I have selected a number of the 'classical' experiments of Experimental Psychology, and have tried to present them in such a way that their performance shall have a real disciplinary value for the undergraduate student. Within this general purpose, my aim has been two-fold. I have sought to show, in the first place, that psychology is above the laboratory: that we employ our instruments of precision not for their own sake, but solely because they help us to a refined and more accurate introspection. And secondly, just as in my Outline of Psychology and Primer of Psychology I gave the results of experimentation a prominent place in the psychological system, so here I have treated the selected experiments not as separate exercises, but as points of departure for systematic discussion. Book excerpt: Experimental design is important enough to merit a book on its own, without statistics, that instead links methodology to a discussion of how psychologists can advance and reject theories about human behaviour. The objective of this book is to fulfil this role. The first four chapters lay the foundations of design in experimental psychology. The first chapter justifies the prominent role given to methodology within the discipline, whilst chapters two and three describe between-subject and within-subject designs. Chapter four compares and contrasts the traditional experimental approach with that of the quasi-experimental, or correlational approach, concluding that the consequences of not recognizing the value of the latter approach can be far-reaching. The following three chapters discuss practical issues involved in running experiments. The first of these offers a comprehensive guide to the student researcher who wants to construct a good questionnaire, including a discussion of reliability and validity issues. The next chapter considers the basic tools of psychological research, whilst both discussing the theoretical problem of how a sample from a population is chosen and offering useful hints on the practical issue of finding adequate populations from which to select participants. The next chapter considers ethical practice within psychological research, written in large part so that psychology students will be better able to anticipate ethical problems in their studies before they occur. The final two chapters consider reporting and reading psychological papers. Chapter eight details what should and should not be included in a laboratory report. The contributors use their collective experience of marking numerous lab reports to highlight common errors and provide solutions. Finally, chapter nine describes the various elements of a journal article, including tips on how to get the best out of your journal reading.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Psychology a Manual of Laboratory Practice, Vol. 1 The general purpose with which this book has been written is sufficiently indicated by its title. I have selected a number of the 'classical' experiments of Experimental Psychology, and have tried to present them in such a way that their performance shall have a real disciplinary value for the undergraduate student. Within this general purpose, my aim has been twofold. I hope that the book may find its sphere of usefulness. I sorely felt the need of some such guide when I entered the Leipzig laboratory, and I have felt it as sorely throughout my teaching experience. It is needless to add that, although eight years have gone to its making, the Manual falls lamentably short of its ideal. A book in conception is a perfect piece of workmanship: the book that leaves the author's hands is but a rough approximation to the first design. My greatest debt, here as elsewhere, is to Wundt. I was impelled towards experimental psychology by dissatisfaction with the logical constructions of the English school; and it was Wundt who taught me the essential lesson of systematic introspection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines for Experimental Psychology The only justification for the existence of an Outline for Experimental Psychology is to be found in its usefulness. In order to be useful, such a manual should serve several distinct purposes. It should encourage rather than inhibit the enthusiasm of the student who is beginning the study of human nature under controlled conditions; it should assist in giving such a student a general and more or less systematic View of the wide field of psycho logical inquiry; it should constitute a guide rather than an author ity; it should be detailed enough to enable the instructor to give his attention to the student rather than to the implements; with all this, it should allow sufficient freedom to avoid becoming itself the main object of investigation. The outline here presented has seemed to serve these various purposes in my own teaching. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
