Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions and Study Questions in Inorganic Chemistry The following loose-leaf Laboratory Directions which have been tried and corrected in our laboratories for the past five years are now presented in printed form for the benefit of other institutions. In the University of Pittsburgh the student will, on an average, complete one set of experiments per three-hour period. He is scheduled for two such periods per week throughout the college year. Results are noted on a separate sheet and submitted with the instruction sheet at the end of each period. Both the direction sheet and record sheet are stamped by the instructor before they are returned to the student. A word should be said about the study questions which constitute the second half of this volume. These serve as a study guide for the student. Questions of major importance are starred. All recitations and examinations are conducted on the basis of these questions so that a uniform system is employed even where a dozen or more instructors handle different sections. The method has met with such marked success here that there is no doubt about its success when introduced into other institutions. The authors will welcome notice of errors found in this volume and invite suggestions from those who have occasion to use it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry: A Laboratory Course for First Year College Students The plan kept in mind in preparing this course is, brie y, as follows: The greater part of the preparations selected are of industrial importance, and for the starting point of each either natural products or crude manufactured materials are used so far as is possible. The course does not aim to be an exhaustive one in chemical preparations, but a limited number of exercises are selected to illustrate the most impor tant types of compounds of the common elements and the most important methods. Two or three times as many exercises are furnished as any one student will be able to complete in the time usually allotted; thus different students may be assigned different preparations. The notes for each exercise are divided into three parts: I. A discussion of the object of the exercise, with an out line of the principle of the method and the reasons for the steps involved. II. Working directions which, if carefully followed, should result in obtaining a satisfactory product. It is believed far better to make the directions very explicit, for the reason that the inexperienced student may easily become discouraged by failures due to difficulties which he is unable to foresee. Difficulties enough are sure to arise to develop originality and resourcefulness. III. Questions for study which involve additional laboratory experiments, the consulting of text-books, and original reasoning. At the end of each group of exercises is furnished a set of general study questions, and this arrangement of the exercises in groups is such as to bring out the relationships shown in the periodic classification of the elements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Inorganic Chemistry: One Hundred Topics in General, Qualitative, and Quantitative Chemistry Much time will often be saved if a. Model of the app. To be used in making an exp. Is set up for pupils to examine, and a few moments at the first of the hour are taken to explain the arrangement, manipula tion, points of connection, etc., of the app. Samples of quantities of materials may also be put out if desired, as beginners are quite sure to get too large an amount. Pupils should be cautioned repeatedly against using too much time, in a lazy way, in preparing app. And in doing an exp. If the laboratory period is quite short, it may be found desirable to use prepared app. As far as possible. Rubber stoppers instead of cork should almost always be used for this reason. Some teachers also prefer that pupils should write out their exps. Except the briefest jottings outside of the laboratory. To the author this does not seem advisable, while he admits that much more can be accomplished in that way, and much neater and more complete books may result. But if this plan is followed, pupils are apt to rely too much on the text-book and too little on themselves. By writing results at once they get into more accurate and rapid habits of observation. If an exp. Is done but hot written out during the period, the student should complete it very soon thereafter, as he has time. It is not necessary to do all the exps. Or to do them in the order given if you prefer some other order. In several cases (e. Exp. 62) the teacher may prefer to do the exp. In presence of the class, who then take notes instead of doing it themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Instruction in the Qualitative Chemical Analysis of Inorganic Substances The Course of Instruction includes two sections - one entitled Labora tory Experiments, giving the directions for the laboratory work; and the other entitled Questions on the Experiments, consisting of a series of ques tions to be studied in'connection with the class-room exercises. The laboratory work described in the section on Laboratory Experiments is from beginning to end closely correlated with the systematic scheme of analysis. For experience has convinced the author that the plan followed in many text-books of requiring the student to study the separate reactions characteristic of the various elements before undertaking their systematic separation is highly unsatisfactory. However valuable the knowledge of the additional reactions might be, it is found in practice that the perform ance of so large a number of independent, disconnected experiments makes little impression on the student's mind and fails to awaken his interest in the subject. Qualitative analysis affords an efiective means of teaching a part of inorganic chemistry chiefly because it unites into a connected whole a great variety of isolated facts, and because the student sees a practical use of the information presented to him; but these advantages evidently do not apply to facts not directly related to the process of analysis. The Questions on the Experiments do not in general include such purely informational questions as are immediately suggested by the Notes on the Procedures. They are mainly intended to assist the instructor in training his students more fully in the general principles involved and in enabling them to derive from the subject the mental training it is capable of afford ing. They are in large part of such a character that, in order to answer them properly, the student must not only carefully study the Notes on the Procedures, but must also do independent thinking. It is assumed in these questions, as well as in the Notes on the Procedures, that the student has previously acquired, in his course on Inorganic Chemistry, a general knowl edge oi the mass - action law and of the chemical aspects of the ionic theory. To what extent the instructor will make use of the Questions will depend on the time available for the course and on the maturity of his students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Work in Chemistry: A Series of Experiments in General Inorganic Chemistry Some of the experiments illustrating important facts and laws of chemistry are, on account of the expensive apparatus or Chemicals required, or because of the skill and care necessary in their execution, of such a nature that they cannot well be done by each individual member of a large class; nevertheless they are of such importance that each student ought to have an accurate knowledge of them. Experiments of this kind have been called Laboratory Demonstrations in the text; and it is intended that these experiments shall be carried out in the presence of the whole class by one or two of the more skillful students, working under the immediate supervision of the instructor. After each such demonstration, opportunity ought to be given to the class to ask questions and to discuss the results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry A special chapter has been introduced for the study of negative radicals. A differentiation is here made between the reactions of a few special reagents upon compounds before and after heating. Finally, the highly objectionable method of recording in the laboratory those observations which are only to be trans ferred later to a so-called notebook is now eliminated. A student who but once engaged in this indefensible practice is far too prone in later years to record weighings and other data on scraps of paper. When such useless records seem to attain a reasonable degree of satisfaction to his untrained mind he may actually transfer them to a more desirable location, but neither to the credit of the location nor the student. This manual is so constructed that all questions under each heading are consecutively numbered. These same numbers appear also upon the opposite or blank pages and indicate positions for the records. Upon the form and accuracy of these records the student himself must expect the proper estimate of his scientific ability. For the interest and care with which the manuscript has been read by Professor William G. Smeaton of this laboratory and for his many valuable suggestions the author wishes to express his gratitude and appreciation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Chemistry for Beginners: An Appendix to the Author's Text-Book of Organic Chemistry IT is admitted universally that chemistry cannot be learnt by the study of text-books only, and that laboratory practice is essential. A student new to the science derives most benefit from a laboratory course of inorganic preparations, simple quantitative experiments, and qualitative inorganic analysis. He is brought thus into contact with work closely connected with the text-books and lectures on this division of chemistry, and is enabled to understand the subject much better than by any other method. A student beginning the study of organic chemistry usually has to content himself with text-books and lectures, and very seldom has the opportunity of handling the compounds about which he has to read. There is, evidently, therefore, a lack in the methods of teaching the elements of organic chemistry adopted in the Universities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Experimental Chemistry (With Descriptive Notes) For Students of General Inorganic Chemistry While no particular claim to originality is made for this text-book, as many of the experiments have been described previously, yet the writer believes that the book will be found to be something more than a mere compilation. This book represents an endeavor to meet these requirements. It is not intended that it shall take the place of a large descriptive work or the instruction of the teacher; on the contrary, it is designed to provide, primarily, an experimental course in general chemistry, and by the use of "descriptive notes" and questions vitally relate it to the lecture-room work. It is scarcely necessary to emphazise the importance of laboratory work as being essential to a thorough comprehension of the subject; but this same work has a very doubtful value unless it is carefully directed and correlated with the lecture and text-book. It must not be merely a mechanical part of the course. The student must see that his laboratory work is but a means to an end - that lectures and experiments are mutually helpful. Very frequently the laboratory work is taught too much apart from the course. Beginners often complain, and more frequently conduct their work as if no relation existed between lectures and laboratory work. It is contended, therefore, that the laboratory manual should provide something to make obvious this relationship and to assist in the fusion of the two.
