This book was released on 1999 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social capital raises productivity and falls with labor mobility. Because labor mobility generates a negative externality, integration of labor markets results in too much mobility, too low a level of social capital, and an ambiguous effect on welfare. Trade liberalization is superior to labor market integration because it reduces mobility and the negative externality associated with it.

Because labor mobility generates a negative externality, integration of labor markets results in too much mobility, too low a level of social capital, and an ambiguous effect on welfare. Trade liberalization is superior to labor market integration because it reduces mobility and the negative externality associated with it.Labor market integration is typically assumed to improve welfare in the absence of distortions, because it allows labor to move to where returns are highest.Schiff examines this result in a simple general equilibrium model in the presence of a common property resource: social capital.Drawing on evidence that social capital raises productivity and falls with labor mobility, Schiff's main findings are that:middot; Labor market integration imposes a negative externality and need not raise welfare.middot; The welfare impact is more beneficial (or less harmful) the greater the difference in endowments is between the integrating regions.middot; Whether positive or negative, the welfare impact is larger the more similar the levels of social capital of the integrating regions are and the lower the migration costs are.middot; Trade liberalization generates an additional benefit-over and above the standard gains from trade - by reducing labor mobility and the negative externality associated with it. Trade liberalization is superior to labor market integration.middot; The creation of new private or public institutions in response to labor market integration may reduce welfare.Schiff shows that the welfare implications depend on two parameters of the model, the curvature of the utility function and the cost of private migration. This paper - a product of Trade, Development Research Group - is part of a larger effort in the group to understand the link between market performance and welfare.

Book Synopsis Immigrant Performance in the Labour Market by : Bram Lancee
Download or read book Immigrant Performance in the Labour Market written by Bram Lancee and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To what extent can different forms of social capital help immigrants make headway on the labour market? An answer to this pressing question begins here. Taking the Netherlands and Germany as case studies, the book identifies two forms of social capital that may work to increase employment, income and occupational status and, conversely, decrease unemployment. New insights into the concepts of bonding and bridging arise through quantitative research methods, using longitudinal and crosssectional data. Referring to a dense network with 'thick' trust, bonding is measured as family ties, co-ethnic ties and trust in the family. Bridging is seen in terms of interethnic ties, thus implying a crosscutting network with 'thin' trust. Immigrant Performance in the Labour Market reveals that although bonding allows immigrants to get by, bridging enables them to get ahead"--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Causal Effects of Social Capital by : Yunsong Chen
Download or read book Causal Effects of Social Capital written by Yunsong Chen and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a series of studies focusing on the role of social capital in the labor market and beyond. Using the effect of individual social capital on labor markets as an example, this book pays special attention to the origins of and solutions to the endogeneity problem. It uses several identification strategies to systematically test for the causal effects of social capital. First, this book constitutes the first attempt to offer a systematic account of the progress made by social scientists in improving causal inferences into the role of social capital in labor markets. Second, the book adopts specialized approaches-both classical and new-toward different sources of endogeneity. Incorporating the latest research from outside fields, such as economics, into sociological research is a small but significant methodological innovation. Third, in addition to empirical research, this book undertakes an innovative exploration of the theory of social capital. It creatively explains the dynamic evolution of social capital, which helps balance objectivism and subjectivism when analyzing interpersonal actions. For sociologists who focus on quantitative research methods and social capital, scholars who study Chinese societies, and related students, this book provides both advanced methods and rich empirical research. Yunsong Chen is a Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Nanjing University. He earned his DPhil in Sociology at Nuffield College, University of Oxford. He has broad research interests in the fields of quantitative sociology (e.g., social networks, social capital, and advanced models for causal inference) and computational sociology. His academic work has appeared in leading English-language journals in the social sciences, including Social Networks, Social Science Research, British Journal of Sociology, Poetics, and Journal of Contemporary China and Scientific Reports, as well as Chinese journals, including Social Science in China and Journal of Chinese Sociology. He serves on the editorial board and international advisory board for several journals, including Sociology, Social Science Research, Journal of Social Computing, and Chinese Sociological Review. His newest book, Understanding China through Big Data, was published by Routledge in 2021.
Book Synopsis Developing Countries In The World Economy by : Jaime De Melo
Download or read book Developing Countries In The World Economy written by Jaime De Melo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differences in the choices of trade and macro policies, both by developing countries and by developed countries towards developing countries, have been critical in determining the overall performance of developing countries. All too often, the performance of developing countries has not been assessed using appropriately conducted studies. The papers in this book are chosen to bridge this gap and show how a quantitative approach to policy evaluation can help resolve controversies and explain the choice of observed policies. The book brings together carefully selected papers that assess the impacts of various trade and macro policies, by quantifying the policies of developing countries at the macro level (exchange rate, investment, savings) and at the sector level (trade and industrial policies), in addition to policies of developed countries towards developing countries (trade preferences, quotas, VERs and migration policies). Facets of the political economy of trade, migration, and climate policies are explored (such as the enlargement of the EU, the rise of regionalism and how it can ease the pains of adjustment to trade liberalization, openness and inequality). Growing tensions between trade and the environment are also investigated. In short, this book covers a wide area of events ranging from external and internal shocks to external and internal policies, showing how the consequences of these events can be brought to rigorous quantitative analysis.
Book Synopsis Does Temporary Migration Have to be Permanent? by : Mohammad Amin
Download or read book Does Temporary Migration Have to be Permanent? written by Mohammad Amin and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The choice between temporary and permanent migration is today central to the design of migration policies. The authors draw a distinction between the two types of migration on the basis of the associated social cost and the dynamics of learning by migrants. They find that unilateral migration policies are globally inefficient because they lead to too much permanent migration and too little temporary and overall migration. Existing international agreements on labor mobility, such as the World Trade Organization's General Agreement on Trade in Services, have failed to do better because they seek primarily to induce host countries to make commitments to allow entry. Instead, Pareto gains and more liberal migration could be achieved through multilateral agreements that enable host countries to commit to repatriation." -- Cover verso.
Book Synopsis Producer Dynamics by : Timothy Dunne

The economic analyses in Producer Dynamics exploit this newly available data on establishments, firms, and workers, to address issues in industrial organization, labor, growth, macroeconomics, and international trade. This innovative volume brings together a group of renowned economists to probe topics such as firm dynamics across countries; patterns of employment dynamics; firm dynamics in nonmanufacturing industries such as retail, health services, and agriculture; employer-employee turnover from matched worker/firm data sets; and turnover in international markets. Producer Dynamics will serve as an invaluable reference to economists and policy makers seeking to understand the links between firms and workers, and the sources of economic dynamics, in the age of globalization.
