Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing the diverse workforce in a global environment requires adaptation of organizations policies and practices to the differences among countries and cultures. In this project, employment laws and employer responsibilities are identified for key topics in three different locations. The project was prepared for Aqua Lung, a worldwide organization that develops, manufactures and distributes technical life support, water safety, fitness and recreation products around the world. The locations researched were Melbourne Australia, Victoria Canada and Mexicali Mexico. Each location has their own chapter in the project with guidelines on employer requirements and best practices for each key topic set forth in a handbook format. The analysis compares employer’s requirements in each location to employer’s requirements in California. Most of the employer’s obligations and requirements are similar for the locations but the main difference lies in greater benefits or stricter rules. To meet employer’s obligations and requirements it is recommended that employers establish internal guidelines for rules and procedures in the workplace. Employers are required to provide employees with information regarding labor laws and regulations in each location and every employee should be made familiar with the internal guidelines. Employers have the responsibility to provide a healthy and safe workplace. To do that it is recommended that employers set clear health and safety rules and host regular health and safety seminars to make sure employees are aware of health and safety procedures. To keep the workplace clear of discrimination and harassment, employers should have processes that prevent those acts from happening and set clear rules on how these matters will be handled if they occur. It is the employer’s responsibility to keep employee information private and it is recommended that employers set standards and procedures on how to gather, use and disclose employee information. An employer should make sure that every employee receives at least the minimum benefits and compensation they are entitled to by law. Employers should treat employees fairly and equally. It is recommended that employers develop policies and standards for employee compensation to ensure fair treatment. When employers operate in the global environment their requirements and obligations differ from one country to the next. Employers need to adapt to differences among countries while still maintaining the company culture and values. Employers should set clear internal rules and policies for each workplace that honor the global company practices while being in compliance with local laws and regulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a collection of cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary research-based chapters on work, workers and the regulation and management of workplace health and safety. Featuring research from Australia, Europe and North America, the chapters traverse important historical examples and place important, emerging contemporary trends, like work in the gig economy, into wider international and historical perspectives. The authors are leading authorities in their fields. The book contributes to advancing our knowledge – empirical and theoretical – of the ways in which labour market dynamics, management strategies, state regulation and public policy, and union organisation affect outcomes for workers. It features in-depth exploration of, and reflection on, some of the major labour market challenges facing workers, and analysis of strengths and weaknesses of responses to those challenges, whether via management, state regulation or collective employee voice. The chapters highlight shifts in in/equality of outcomes; access to security and flexibility at work; genuine access to workplace voice and decision-making; and the implications of different avenues and mechanisms for regulating work and employment. The text is aimed at researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students in work and organisational studies, industrial/employment relations and human resource management, workplace (or occupational) health and safety, employment law, and labour history. It will also be of particular interest to policy makers and practitioners working in the field of workplace health and safety.

The Australian Charter of Employment Rights is a blueprint for the future of industrial relations in Australia.

The Charter is a back-to-basics attempt to define the rights of workers and employers. It is a simply expressed contemporary document that draws upon international as well as uniquely Australian rights and values to create a set of rights and obligations which all workplaces are encouraged to adopt and observe. The Charter enables a critique of current labour laws and any proposals for change.

The Australian Charter of Employment Rights is the collaborative effort of seventeen of Australia’s leading IR practitioners, lawyers and economists, edited by Mordy Bromberg and Mark Irving. It is the initiative of the Australian Institute of Employment Rights, an independent tripartite body representing workers, employers and the public interest.

“The Charter of Australian Employment Rights leads the way for industrial relations in Australia – a way towards greater harmony and greater prosperity. It is a worthy objective, which can be achieved by employers and workers adopting a template for workplace fairness.”

Bob Hawke
