Book Synopsis Venice's Hidden Enemies by : John Martin
Download or read book Venice's Hidden Enemies written by John Martin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How could early modern Venice, a city renowned for its political freedom and social harmony, also have become a center of religious dissent and inquisitorial repression? To answer this question, John Martin develops an innovative approach that deftly connects social and cultural history. The result is a profoundly important contribution to Renaissance and Reformation studies. Martin offers a vivid re-creation of the social and cultural worlds of the Venetian heretics—those men and women who articulated their hopes for religious and political reform and whose ideologies ranged from evangelical to anabaptist and even millenarian positions. In exploring the connections between religious beliefs and social experience, he weaves a rich tapestry of Renaissance urban life that is sure to intrigue all those involved in anthropological, religious, and historical studies—students and scholars alike.
Book Synopsis Domenico Ghirlandaio by : Jeanne K. Cadogan
Download or read book Domenico Ghirlandaio written by Jeanne K. Cadogan and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domenico Ghirlandaio was one of the most popular artists in fifteenth-century Florence. He worked in a variety of media, including panel paintings, wall murals, mosaic, and manuscript illumination, and his workshop - to which Michelangelo was apprenticed - was highly influential. This beautiful book offers a radically new interpretation of Ghirlandaio’s life and work, viewing him primarily as an artisan active within the craft traditions, guild structure, and workshop organizations of his day. Jean K. Cadogan argues that Ghirlandaio was a pivotal figure in the transformation of the artist from medieval artisan to Renaissance genius. She traces his gradual social elevation, which reflected the increasing respect with which he was treated by his patrons. And she notes that the changes in the way he and other artists were viewed created a milieu that encouraged innovation in technique, style, and content, qualities that were vividly displayed in Ghirlandaio’s work. Cadogan explains how his working method, his pragmatic, artisan approach to technique, the organization and functioning of his workshop, and his relations with his patrons affected the works of art Ghirlandaio produced. Her text is complemented by a catalogue raisonné of Ghirlandaio’s works in all media as well as an appendix of documents useful for scholars.

Book Synopsis The Elect Nation by : Lorenzo Polizzotto
Download or read book The Elect Nation written by Lorenzo Polizzotto and published by Oxford-Warburg Studies. This book was released on 1994 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Elect Nation is the first comprehensive study of the religious, political and cultural movement inspired by Savonarola. Based on a thorough examination of the archival material and manuscript sources, the book argues that the followers of Savonarola exercised a profound influence on every facet of Florentine life during the important period of the city's transition from republic to principate. It is the author's contention that their ideology and activities provide the key to understanding not only the Florentine Republic, but also the nature of contemporary political debate and the characteristics of the emerging Medicean Principate. A major preoccupation of the book is to show how the Savonarolans as a group managed to survive the execution of their leaders and to regain their strength and influence. The author traces their networks of support and analyses the way in which they infiltrated and restructured existing Florentine institutions to their advantage. He also reveals how they exploited spiritual counselling and lay and religious patronage to expand their influence and, in particular, how they ensured the survival of their movement by forming an anti-Medicean alliance of republican forces in Florence.
Book Synopsis Aleister Crowley and the Temptation of Politics by : Marco Pasi
Download or read book Aleister Crowley and the Temptation of Politics written by Marco Pasi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) is one of the most famous and significant authors in the history of western esotericism. Crowley has been long ignored by scholars of religion whilst the stories of magical and sexual practice which circulate about him continue to attract popular interest. "Aleister Crowley and the Temptation of Politics" looks at the man behind the myth - by setting him firmly within the politics of his time - and the development of his ideas through his extensive and extraordinarily varied writings. Crowley was a rationalist, sympathetic to the values of the Enlightenment, but also a romantic and a reactionary. His search for an alternative way to express his religious feelings led him to elaborate his own vision of social and political change. Crowley's complex politics led to his involvement with many key individuals, organisations and groups of his day - the secret service of various countries, the German Nazi party, Russian political activists, journalists and politicians of various persuasions, as well as other writers - both in Europe and America. "Aleister Crowley and the Temptation of Politics" presents a life of ideas, an examination of a man shaped by and shaping the politics of his times.

Book Synopsis Pontormo's Frescos in San Lorenzo. Heresy, Politics and Culture in the Florence of Cosimo I by : Massimo Firpo
Download or read book Pontormo's Frescos in San Lorenzo. Heresy, Politics and Culture in the Florence of Cosimo I written by Massimo Firpo and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the choir of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, a truly sacred temple of the Medici dynasty, Pontormo painted a grandiose cycle of frescos between 1545 and 1556, which were then unfortunately destroyed in the mid-18th century. Far earlier, Giorgio Vasari issued a severe judgment on them that lasted into the modern day. His was a dismissal motivated formally by artistic reasons, but it concealed other, more insidious, ideological and religious motivations. On the basis of drawings, copies, paintings and literary sources, this study reconstructs the design and arrangement of the frescoes, revealing them to have been inspired by a contemporary heterodox text, one that was included in the Index in 1549. From a dense web of Florentine religious, cultural and political life and its shifts in the middle decades of the century, the political motivations underlying Vasari's commitment to transforming the doctrinal heresy from which those grandiose paintings had drawn inspiration into an artistic heresy emerge. It was a commitment that, after the conclusion of the Council of Trent, risked reflecting upon the new Counter-Reformist structure of Medici power.
