Book Synopsis Discursive Geographies by : Jeanne Garane
Download or read book Discursive Geographies written by Jeanne Garane and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2005 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present collection of essays follows in the wake of recent work in cultural geography challenging the idea that maps are scientifically neutral entities, or that space, unlike time, is immobile. In defining space, place and geography as forms of textuality, the essays collected in this volume examine the ways in which postcolonial and metropolitan literary and filmic texts in French can at once inscribe and produce place and space, and thereby participate in forms of "discursive geographies." It challenges assumptions that hold sustainable linguistic diversity to be inherently non-urban while regarding the city as an unproblematic site for understanding the social function of language.

Book Synopsis Writerly Identities in Beur Fiction and Beyond by : Laura Reeck
Download or read book Writerly Identities in Beur Fiction and Beyond written by Laura Reeck and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writerly Identities in Beur Fiction and Beyond explores the Beur/banlieue literary and cultural field from its beginnings in the 1980s to the present. It examines a set of postcolonial Bildungsroman novels by Azouz Begag, Farida Belghoul, Le la Sebbar, Sa d Mohamed, Rachid Dja dani, and Mohamed Razane. In these novels, the central characters are authors who struggle to find self-identity and a place in the world through writing and authorship. The book thus explores the different ways all these novels relate the process of "becoming" to the process of writing. Neither is straightforward as the author-characters struggle to put their lives into words, settle upon a genre of writing, and adopt an authorial persona. Each chapter of Writerly Identities in Beur Fiction and Beyond focuses on a given author's own relationship to writing before assessing his or her use of the author-character as a proxy. In so doing, the study as a whole explores a set of literary questions (genre, textual authority, reception) and engages them against the backdrop of socio-cultural challenges facing contemporary French society. These include debates on education, cultural literacy, diversity and equal opportunity, and the "banlieue" environment. Finally, it argues in relation to the authors and novels in question for the particular relevance of "rooted and vernacular" cosmopolitanism, which suggests both that exploration of the world must begin at home and that stories are crucial for such explorations.

Book Synopsis Ordinary Sudan, 1504-2019 by : Elena Vezzadini
Download or read book Ordinary Sudan, 1504-2019 written by Elena Vezzadini and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book starts from the premise that the study of "exceptionally normal" women and men - as conceived by microhistory - has radical implications for understanding history and politics, and applies this notion to Sudan. Against a historiography dominated by elite actors and international agents, it examines both how ordinary people have brought about the most important political shifts in the country's history (including the recent revolution in 2019) and how they have played a role in maintaining authoritarian regimes. It also explores how men and women have led their daily lives through a web of ordinary worries, desires and passions. The book includes contributions by historians, anthropologists, and political scientists who often have a dual commitment to Middle Eastern and African studies. While focusing on the complexity and nuances of Sudanese local lives in both the past and the present, it also connects Sudan and South Sudan with broader regional, global, and imperial trends. The book is divided into two volumes and six parts, ordered thematically. The first part tackles the entanglement between archives, social history, and power. The second focuses on women's agency in history and politics from the Funj era to the recent 2018-2019 revolution. Part 3 includes contributions on the history and global connections of the Sudanese armed forces. In the second volume, part 4 intersects the themes of urban life, leisure, and colonial attitudes with queerness. In part 5, labour identities, practices, and institutions are discussed both in urban milieus and against the background of war and expropriation in rural areas. Finally, part 6 studies the construction of social consent under various self-styled Islamic regimes, as well as the emergence of alternative imaginaries and acts of citizenship in times of political openness.

Book Synopsis The Jacquerie of 1358 by : Justine Firnhaber-Baker
Download or read book The Jacquerie of 1358 written by Justine Firnhaber-Baker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-28 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jacquerie of 1358 is one of the most famous and mysterious peasant uprisings of the Middle Ages. Beginning in a small village but eventually overrunning most of northern France, the Jacquerie rebels destroyed noble castles and killed dozens of noblemen before being put down in a bloody wave of suppression. The revolt occurred in the wake of the Black Death and during the Hundred Years War, and it was closely connected to a rebellion in Paris against the French crown. The Jacquerie of 1358 resolves long-standing controversies about whether the revolt was just an irrational explosion of peasant hatred or simply an extension of the Parisian revolt. It shows that these opposing conclusions are based on the illusory assumption that the revolt was a united movement with a single goal. In fact, the Jacquerie has to be understood as a constellation of many events that evolved over time. It involved thousands of people, who understood what they were doing in different and changing ways. The story of the Jacquerie is about how individuals and communities navigated their specific political, social, and military dilemmas, how they reacted to events as they unfolded, and how they chose to remember (or to forget) in its aftermath. The Jacquerie of 1358 rewrites the narrative of this tumultuous period and gives special attention to how violence and social relationships were harnessed to mobilize popular rebellion.
Book Synopsis Éducation, violences, conflits et perspectives de paix en Afrique subsaharienne by :
Download or read book Éducation, violences, conflits et perspectives de paix en Afrique subsaharienne written by and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2009 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Bourdieu on Religion written by Terry Rey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Bourdieu was one of the most influential social theorists of our time. He developed a series of concepts to uncover the way society works and to challenge assumptions about what society is. His ideas illuminate how individuals and groups find value and meaning and so have rapidly come to be seen as hugely productive in analysing how religion works in society. 'Bourdieu on Religion' introduces students to Bourdieu's key concepts: cultural, social and symbolic capital; habitus and field; and his challenge to the structures of social inequality. This study will be invaluable to any student interested in the relationships between religion, class and social power.

Book Synopsis Centers and Peripheries in Romance Language Literatures in the Americas and Africa by :
Download or read book Centers and Peripheries in Romance Language Literatures in the Americas and Africa written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is center and periphery? How can centers and peripheries be recognized by their ontological and axiological features? How does the axiological saturation of a literary field condition aesthetics? How did these factors transform center-periphery relationships to the former metropolises of Romance literatures of the Americas and Africa? What are the consequences of various deperipheralization contexts and processes for poetics? Using theoretical sections and case studies, this book surveys and investigates the limits of globalization. Through explorations of the intercultural dynamics, the aesthetic contributions of former peripheries are examined in terms of the transformative nature of peripheries on centralities.
