Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luther’s 95 Theses begin and end with the concept of suffering, and the question of why a benevolent God allows his creations to suffer remains one of the central issues of religious thought. In order to chart the processes by which religious discourse relating to pain and suffering became marginalized during the period from the Renaissance to the end of the seventeenth century, this book examines a number of works on the subject translated into English from (mainly) Spanish and Italian. Through such an investigation, it is possible to see how the translators and editors of such works demonstrate, in their prefaces and comments as well as in their fidelity or otherwise to the original text, an awareness that attitudes in England are different from those in Catholic countries. Furthermore, by comparing these translations with the discourse of native English writers of the period, a number of conclusions can be drawn regarding the ways in which Protestant England moved away from pre-Reformation attitudes of suffering and evolved separately from the Catholic culture which continued to hold sway in the south of Europe. The central conclusion is that once the theological justifications for undergoing, inflicting, or witnessing pain and suffering have been removed, discourses of pain largely cease to have a legitimate context and any kind of fascination with pain comes to seem perverse, if not perverted. The author observes an increasing sense of discomfort throughout the seventeenth century with texts which betray such fascination. Combining elements of theology, literature and history, this book provides a fascinating perspective on one of the key conundrums of early modern religious history.

Book excerpt: An exploration of mysticism, with a particular focus on the appearance of bodily wounds that bear resemblance to Jesus Christ’s crucifixion wounds, known as Stigmata. First published in 1947, The Physical Phenomena of Mysticism details the Christian mysticism of Stigmata. Those who lead a virtuous, Christian life may discover wounds in similar places to that of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion wounds, for example, the hands and feet from the nails, the head from the crown of thorns, or the shoulders and back from the weight of carrying the cross. Montague Summers was an English clergyman, best known for his studies on vampires, witches, and werewolves. In this volume, he explores and analyses divine and diabolic phenomena.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of St. Mary Magdalen De-Pazzi, Florentine Noble, Sacred Carmelite Virgin, Vol. 1: To Which Are Added Her Works, a Narration of the Miracles Wrought Through Her Intercession Down to Our Days and Prayers for the Novena in Her Honor In consequence of many requests for the Life of St. Mary Mag dalen de-pazzi, which could not be met on account of the scarcity of copies still extant, l the importance of supplying this want was felt by many, and some were about to have another edition issued, when, being spoken to by one of them, I, though the least skilled in the literary art, very gladly undertook with all possible speed to write a work so dear to my heart. Repeating faithfully all that is believed to have been done by the Saint, gathering all that the writers of her life said that is interesting, and bringing to light unedited documents, with notes for their better understanding, I hope to have satisfied the desire not only of devout persons, but of those who will value this as an historical work. Book excerpt: Florence Nightingale is best known as a woman of action—a founder of modern nursing, a reformer in the field of public health, and a pioneer in the use of statistics. What is not generally appreciated is that Nightingale was deeply engaged in the religious and philosophical thought of her time and that the primary aim of her life was not to reform social institutions but to serve God. Although Nightingale gave primacy to her spiritual life, few of the books written about her have done so, and, until recently, few of her own writings about religion have been published. This failure to attend to Nightingale's spiritual life began to change during the 1980s, most significantly with the 1994 publication of Suggestions for Thought, her own presentation of her religious views. At the heart of The Friendship of Florence Nightingale and Mary Clare Moore are forty-seven letters written by Nightingale to Moore—her "Dearest Reverend Mother"—the founding superior of the Roman Catholic Sisters of Mercy in Bermondsey, London; ten letters written by Moore to Nightingale; and five letters written by Nightingale about Clare to other Sisters of Mercy. These letters illustrate the personal lives and spiritual struggles and aspirations of two highly influential women in Victorian England: one working to achieve military and governmental reforms, the other designing and implementing new church-related services to the poor-both bound together by their devotion to those who were neglected, by nursing and other skills, by mature Christian faith, and by their engaging affection for one another.
