Book excerpt: The edition is a diplomatic edition based on the text of the Arabic version of IV Ezra as found in the unique tenth-century manuscript Ms Mt Sinai Arabic Codex 589 which contains the full text of this version. It is a translation of a Syriac text closely related to the sole survivor in Ms Milan, Ambrosian Library, B. 21 Inf. It is not identical with any of the other known Arabic versions of IV Ezra, which appear to have been translated from the Greek. The introduction to the edition contains a description of the manuscript, a discussion of its orthography and its scribal mistakes and of the adopted method of text edition. The translation is an annotated translation. The introduction deals among others with the relation between the Syriac version of IV Ezra and its Arabic translation, the fragment in Ms Berol. Sprenger 30 (Ahlwardt 9434), the relation between the Arabic version of IV Ezra and the Arabic version of the Apocalypse of Baruch in the same manuscript and the occurence of Middle Arabic elements in the text.

Book excerpt: Le travail d'édition des "Homélies sur les Actes des Apôtres" de Jean Chrysostome, entrepris il y a une trentaine d'années, n'a toujours pas été mené à terme. Cela justifie l'étude de la version arménienne, présente dans de nombreux manuscrits sous forme de chaînes et sous sa forme originale, dans deux manuscrits. L'un d'eux contient une traduction intégrale faite en 1077 à partir du grec. Le présent travail donne, dans le volume 2, le texte arménien de quatre homélies établi à partir des deux manuscrits étudiés ainsi que celui du colophon du manuscrit principal. Le volume 1 propose la traduction française et contient l'étude de la version arménienne et sa comparaison avec le grec. Cette étude a permis de relever et d'analyser les procédés de traduction utilisés au XIème siècle et de les comparer à ceux du Vème siècle, "époque d'or" de la traduction arménienne, durant laquelle ont été traduits tous les Livres de la Bible. A cette fin, ont été examinés tous les lemmes des "Actes" commentés dans ces quatre homélies, ainsi que toutes les citations bibliques que fait l'auteur. L'analyse a permis de montrer l'évolution syntaxique et lexicale de l'arménien. La caractéristique essentielle de cette version est son extrême littéralité. Comparée au texte grec d'un témoin de la recension considérée comme plus authentique par les hellénises, cette traduction arménienne corrobore les hypothèses des chercheurs et permet de confirmer la supériorité et l'antériorité de celle-ci. Elle est donc un témoin essentiel pour l'étude de l'original. Quant aux écarts, dans une version si fidèle au grec, ils peuvent signifier une lecture spécifiquement arménienne de l'exégète byzantin. Book excerpt: Basil of Caesarea is considered one of the architects of the Pro-Nicene Trinitarian doctrine adopted at the Council of Constantinople in 381, which eastern and western Christians to this day profess as ""orthodox."" Nowhere is his Trinitarian theology more clearly expressed than in his first major doctrinal work, Against Eunomius, finished in 364 or 365 CE. Responding to Eunomius, whose Apology gave renewed impetus to a tradition of starkly subordinationist Trinitarian theology that would survive for decades, Basil's Against Eunomius reflects the intense controversy raging at that time among Christians across the Mediterranean world over who God is. In this treatise, Basil attempts to articulate a theology both of God's unitary essence and of the distinctive features that characterize the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--a distinction that some hail as the cornerstone of ""Cappadocian"" theology. In Against Eunomius, we see the clash not simply of two dogmatic positions on the doctrine of the Trinity, but of two fundamentally opposed theological methods. Basil's treatise is as much about how theology ought to be done and what human beings can and cannot know about God as it is about the exposition of Trinitarian doctrine. Thus Against Eunomius marks a turning point in the Trinitarian debates of the fourth century, for the first time addressing the methodological and epistemological differences that gave rise to theological differences. Amidst the polemical vitriol of Against Eunomius is a call to epistemological humility on the part of the theologian, a call to recognize the limitations of even the best theology. While Basil refined his theology through the course of his career, Against Eunomius remains a testament to his early theological development and a privileged window into the Trinitarian controversies of the mid-fourth century.
