El nombre de la isla fue inventado por Moro. Aunque con el paso del tiempo el termino utopia se haya popularizado como sinonimo de perfeccion, u objetivo inalcanzable, Tomas Moro no le atribuye explicitamente ese significado en su obra. Moro crea una comunidad ficticia con ideales filosoficos y politicos, entre otros, diferentes a los de las comunidades contemporaneas a su epoca. Esta creacion intelectual es presentada en su obra mediante la narracion y descripcion que realiza de dicha comunidad un explorador, llamado Rafael Hithlodeo, al regresar a la sociedad medieval europea. A diferencia de las sociedades medievales en Europa, las autoridades son determinadas en Utopia mediante el voto popular, aunque con importantes diferencias con respecto a las democracias del siglo XX.

El hecho de que Moro obvie en sus planteamientos el reconocimiento de la libertad humana confiere a Utop�a la irracionalidad de la que huye, la imprevisibilidad que le niega el autor. Porque m�s all� de la utop�a colectivista siempre est� el ideal de la persona libre.
