Book Synopsis Migrating Objects by : Christa Clarke

Book excerpt: Peggy Guggenheim (1898 - 1979) challenged boundaries as a patron and collector. She is celebrated for her groundbreaking collection of European and American modern art. The volume will focus on a lesser-known but crucial episode in Guggenheim's own migratory path: her turn to the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas in the 1950s and '60s. In these years, Guggenheim acquired works created by artists from cultures worldwide, including early twentieth-century sculpture from Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, and New Guinea, and ancient examples from Mexico and Peru. 'Migrating Objects' emerges from an extended period of research and discussion on this largely ignored area of Guggenheim's collection by a curatorial advisory committee, which has led to exciting findings, including the reattribution of individual works, among them the Nigerian headdress (Ago Egungun) produced by the workshop of Oniyide Adugbologe (ca. 1875-1949), which is illustrated in the catalogue.

Book Synopsis Socrates, or on Human Knowledge by : Simone Luzzatto
Download or read book Socrates, or on Human Knowledge written by Simone Luzzatto and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socrates, Or On Human Knowledge, published in Venice in 1651, is the only work written by a Jew that contains so far the promise of a genuinely sceptical investigation into the validity of human certainties. Simone Luzzatto masterly developed this book as a pièce of theatre where Socrates, as main actor, has the task to demonstrate the limits and weaknesses of the human capacity to acquire knowledge without being guided by revelation. He achieved this goal by offering an overview of the various and contradictory gnosiological opinions disseminated since ancient times: the divergence of views, to which he addressed the most attention, prevented him from giving a fixed definition of the nature of the cognitive process. This obliged him to come to the audacious conclusion of neither affirming nor denying anything concerning human knowledge, and finally of suspending his judgement altogether. This work unfortunately had little success in Luzzatto’s lifetime, and was subsequently almost forgotten. The absence of substantial evidence from his contemporaries and that of his epistolary have thus increased the difficulty of tracing not only its legacy in the history of philosophical though, but also of understanding the circumstances surrounding the writing of his Socrates. The present edition will be a preliminary study aiming to shed some light on the philosophical and historical value of this work’s translation, indeed it will provide a broader readership with the opportunity to access this immensely complicated work and also to grasp some aspects of the composite intellectual framework and admirable modernity of Venetian Jewish culture in the ghetto.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This collection of poems and anonymous folktales in the Molisan dialect traces the unfolding of two stories which, although distinct, interweave and complete each other: the author's individual story and the story of a town in the South of Italy. The images of an apparently immobile and archaic world alternate with the events of a complex and tormented historical reality, in whose magma the new and the old clash and fuse.

Book Synopsis Patients and Practitioners by : Roy Porter
Download or read book Patients and Practitioners written by Roy Porter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume provide an unusual historical perspective on the experience of illness: they try to reconstruct what being ill (from a minor ailment to fatal sickness) was like in pre-industrial society from the point of view of the sufferers themselves. The authors examine the meanings that were attached to sickness; popular medical beliefs and practices; the diffusion of popular medical knowledge; and the relations between patients and their doctors (both professional and 'fringe') seen from the patients' point of view. This is an important work, for illness and death dominated life in earlier societies to an enormous degree. Yet almost no studies of this kind have ever been carried out before, practically all previous treatments having been written from the traditional point of view of the doctor, the hospital, or medical science. It will accordingly interest a wide range of readers interested in social history as well as the history of medicine itself.

Download or read book Refugee Tales written by Ali Smith and published by Comma Press. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two unaccompanied children travel across the Mediterranean in an overcrowded boat that has been designed to only make it halfway across… A 63-year-old man is woken one morning by border officers ‘acting on a tip-off’ and, despite having paid taxes for 28 years, is suddenly cast into the detention system with no obvious means of escape… An orphan whose entire life has been spent in slavery – first on a Ghanaian farm, then as a victim of trafficking – writes to the Home Office for help, only to be rewarded with a jail sentence and indefinite detention… These are not fictions. Nor are they testimonies from some distant, brutal past, but the frighteningly common experiences of Europe’s new underclass – its refugees. While those with ‘citizenship’ enjoy basic human rights (like the right not to be detained without charge for more than 14 days), people seeking asylum can be suspended for years in Kafka-esque uncertainty. Here, poets and novelists retell the stories of individuals who have direct experience of Britain’s policy of indefinite immigration detention. Presenting their accounts anonymously, as modern day counterparts to the pilgrims’ stories in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, this book offers rare, intimate glimpses into otherwise untold suffering.
