Book excerpt: This book offers various ways in which analyzing professional experience and activity in simulation training makes it possible to describe practice-based learning affordances and processes. Research has been conducted in various simulation programs in the domains of healthcare, victim rescue and population protection, involving healthcare workers, firemen, policemen, servicemen, and civil security leaders. "Work-as-done" (/ "training-as-done") in simulation has been analyzed with ergonomics, occupational psychology, and vocational training approaches. The authors describe and discuss theoretical, methodological, and/or practical issues related to practitioner experience and activity in simulation training. The book also provides evidence on the conditions under which lived experience in simulation can foster or hinder learning, and derives appropriate orientations for simulation design and implementation.

Book excerpt: Triangulations, and more precisely meshes, are at the heart of many problems relating to a wide variety of scientific disciplines, and in particular numerical simulations of all kinds of physical phenomena. In numerical simulations, the functional spaces of approximation used to search for solutions are defined from meshes, and in this sense these meshes play a fundamental role. This strong link between meshes and functional spaces leads us to consider advanced simulation methods in which the meshes are adapted to the behaviors of the underlying physical phenomena. This book presents the basic elements of this vision of meshing. These mesh adaptations are generally governed by a posteriori error estimators representing an increase of the error with respect to a size or metric. Independently of this metric of calculation, compliance with a geometry can also be calculated using a so-called geometric metric. The notion of mesh thus finds its meaning in the metric of its elements.

Book excerpt: This book reports on advanced strategies to design, modeling and testing morphing wings for aeronautical applications. Covering the major outcomes of the multidisciplinary project “Smart Morphing & Sensing” (H2020 N° 723402 SMS), funded by the European Union between 2017 and 2020, it presents a complete set of theories and methods that have been used and developed to integrate novel electroactive actuators and sensors in wings, for the purpose of increasing their aerodynamic efficiency and attenuate vibrations and noise. Topics include: integrated aeroelastic design of morphing wings using high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics and structural mechanics, distributed sensing using a new generation of high-fidelity fiber optics sensors, and controller design by appropriate flight control commands. Further, the book reports on advanced experimental techniques to validate novel actuation and sensing systems on the built prototypes via wind tunnel tests at subsonic (take-off and landing) and transonic (cruise) speeds. All in all, this volume provides readers with extensive and timely information on research and developments of bioinspired aircraft wings.

Book excerpt: The book explores how mentoring, theoretical background of mentoring and how mentoring is used by nurses in all arenas where they work in health care, education, research, policy, politics, and academia in supporting nurses with their professional and career development. Over 300 mentors and mentees, from a wide range of countries across all continents, share their stories of mentoring reflecting on their development in leadership, clinical practice, education, research and politics. The book describes various types of mentoring including more traditional types of mentoring as well as virtual, online and peer mentoring. During the mentorship trajectories the nurses address an inclusive collection of issues that they are faced with and share supporting strategies. The book highlights the importance of mentoring for nurses to support their personal, and professional leadership development. Also, it emphasizes the importance of mentoring for when nurses engaged in variety of projects that could entail or encompass evidence-based clinical practice, development within education, research in the clinical arena, policy formation, political affairs, or cultural inclusion that present significant impact in patient care and healthcare outcomes within and across countries. With The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity report from the National Academies of Sciences, published in 2021, the role of nursing will become ever more dynamic and therefore the profession of nursing must be visible in improving and securing the future for patients, families, and communities across the globe. Mentoring practices to build the profession’s leaders are forever essential, acute, and imperative. This book shows how mentoring can support nurses in further developing nursing as a profession and scientific discipline across countries to support clinical application of evidence based practice, and nursing education and research dissemination. Accordingly, this book shares essential, diverse and pioneering expertise through wide range of narrative stories that will benefit nurses at all years of experience, from early career nurses, emerging leaders, nurse educators, leaders, policy makers and nurse scientists around the globe. The nursing profession must magnify its position in health care and nurses need to proliferate their contributions throughout the globe. They can accomplish that through mentoring and “growing and nurturing other nurses” to advance and thrive in today’s world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In patient care, inaccuracy often leads to error: the patient does not receive the right medication, the nurse is mistaken about the patient, the doctor is mistaken about the condition. Human error in care is now a well-known occurrence, and medicine has borrowed many tools from aviation to improve safety, such as simulation training, limitation of working time, use of checklists, and so forth. All these tools contribute to improving human factors in healthcare. Often due to the lack of communication between professionals, healthcare accidents are avoidable. The only solution is the standardization of communication through phraseology. But make no mistake, the subject of communication is vast and much more complex to teach than we imagine. Communication is not only an exchange of words, of meaning, of a sender-receiver scheme; it also carries the essence of all social and cooperative life by its tone, by its moment, by the listening and availability it demands from the other person, by the words chosen, by those not said voluntarily, and those referred to as “tacit” (what we no longer need to say but the other guesses). The Medical Phraseology Guide for Superior Patient Safety: How to Improve Communications Between Caregivers, through concrete and proven examples, gives readers the keys to improve communication with their healthcare colleagues. The author proposes 26 rules that are detailed and easy applicable in everyday life. These rules are inspired by the tools and checklist developed and used by commercial airline pilots. Today, more than ever, caregivers face new situations, and they have to adapt to caring for an unusual number of patients, sometimes in new environments. Given this new environment, it becomes clear that teamwork and communication are indispensable tools for improving efficiency and safety in patient care.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.
