Book excerpt: Proceedings of the United Nations Security Council Arria-Formula meeting on Food, Nutrition and Peace, co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Angola and Spain to the United Nations on 29 March 2016 in New York, USA. The Arria-formula allowed for an informal and fruitful conversation on the topic. The FAO Director-General opened by providing a broad overview on the topic followed by concrete examples illustrating the links between food insecurity and conflict, noting issues that need to be addressed moving forward. This publication prepared by FAO offers the opportunity to further reflect on this issue. Food security and nutrition and food-security related interventions can contribute to conflict prevention and conflict mitigation by building and enhancing social cohesion, addressing root causes or drivers of conflict, and by contributing to the legitimacy of, and trust in, governments. Food security can support peace-building efforts and peace-building can reinforce food security

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis The International Organization of Hunger by : Peter Uvin
Download or read book The International Organization of Hunger written by Peter Uvin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1993, this is part of the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva series. This study which looks at whether scholars of international politics attempt to understand cooperative behavior in the light of the theories developed by the observers of both conflict and of cooperation. This volume expands the short list of such works and does so with insight, a wide range of scholarship and a willingness to test particular cases against existing theory. The author has written a book which expands the knowledge of, but also a thoughtful improvement of existing theoretical approaches. Uvin's universe of enquiry excludes military power and its application. It concentrates on the long-term, complex organization of cooperative transnational behavior and its rationale. Its focusses on functional issues involving world hunger, a haunting background and result, and perhaps even one cause, of the dreadful violence that characterizes our world even as the threat of catastrophic nuclear warfare has declined.

Book Synopsis Spatial Food and Nutrition Security Typologies for Agriculture and Food Value Chain Interventions in Eastern DRC by : Marivoet, Wim
Download or read book Spatial Food and Nutrition Security Typologies for Agriculture and Food Value Chain Interventions in Eastern DRC written by Marivoet, Wim and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-11-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To guide the design of future agriculture and food value chain interventions, this paper combines two existing spatial food and nutrition security typologies and applies them to the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Apart from estimating absolute and relative inefficiencies along the food system from agricultural potential to nutrition, the integration of both typologies resulted in nine unique low efficiency profiles across the territories and major cities of the Greater Kivu region and Tanganyika. In addition to low utilization efficiency observed in some areas, most PICAGL intervention zones, especially Uvira and Kalemie, suffer from significant market constraints and therefore could substantially benefit from food value chain development. Although this paper relies on the most recent and spatially disaggregated data (which is a major improvement with respect to agricultural statistics of the country), the proposed typologies cannot uncover all bottlenecks hindering the development of agricultural value chains in the region.
Book Synopsis Les filets sociaux en Afrique by : Carlo Del Ninno
Download or read book Les filets sociaux en Afrique written by Carlo Del Ninno and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for safety nets in Sub-Saharan Africa is vast. In addition to being the world's poorest region, Sub-Saharan Africa is also one of the most unequal. In this context, redistribution must be seen as a legitimate way to fight poverty and ensure shared prosperity - and all the more so in countries where growth is driven by extractive industries that are not labor-intensive and often employ very few poor people. Given that most African countries face difficult decisions about how to allocate limited resources among a number of social programs, evidence is important. Do Safety Net programs actually benefit the poorest people? This book demonstrates with empirical evidence that it is possible to reach the poorest and most vulnerable people with safety net programs, and provides lessons for the effective use of targeting methods to achieve this outcome in the region.
Book Synopsis COVID-19 and Marginalisation of People and Places by : Borna Fuerst-Bjeliš
Download or read book COVID-19 and Marginalisation of People and Places written by Borna Fuerst-Bjeliš and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how COVID-19 has often enhanced social and economic marginalisation in different places and societies around the world. It explores the reality that selective deglobalisation is occurring and over and above the human tragedy which has been experienced, many societies and economies have had to adapt to the new reality which they find themselves in. Governments have been challenged to improve health care and provide economic relief and stimulus packages to sectors as diverse as tourism and education which have had to develop new ways of coping. Resilience theory is drawn on to help explain some of the creative responses which we observe, while in other places deep-rooted concerns for the future are a stark reality. By describing how the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing geographic, social and economic marginalisation, particularly for the most vulnerable places, societies and economic activities globally, this book provides insight into the impacts and implications across the world and reflects on the different experiences.
Book Synopsis The Right to Life by : Christian Tomuschat
Download or read book The Right to Life written by Christian Tomuschat and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The right to life stands at the heart of human rights protection. Individuals cannot enjoy any of the rights guaranteed to them unless their physical existence is ensured. All human rights instrument list the right to life as the first one of their safeguards. Nonetheless, in many situations human life finds itself under structural threat. Although obligated by law to protect the right to life, State authorities time and again engage in deliberate acts of killing. Fortunately, international review bodies have devised many imaginative counter-strategies. Another one of those structural threats is global warming. Obviously, armed conflict puts human life inevitably at risk; the limits of the ‘license to kill’ given by the laws of war must be scrupulously observed.
