This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Theories of Informetrics and Scholarly Communication by : Cassidy R. Sugimoto

This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientometrics have become an essential element in the practice and evaluation of science and research, including both the evaluation of individuals and national assessment exercises. Yet, researchers and practitioners in this field have lacked clear theories to guide their work. As early as 1981, then doctoral student Blaise Cronin published "The need for a theory of citing" —a call to arms for the fledgling scientometric community to produce foundational theories upon which the work of the field could be based. More than three decades later, the time has come to reach out the field again and ask how they have responded to this call. This book compiles the foundational theories that guide informetrics and scholarly communication research. It is a much needed compilation by leading scholars in the field that gathers together the theories that guide our understanding of authorship, citing, and impact.
Book Synopsis Economics and Information by : Pascal Petit
Download or read book Economics and Information written by Pascal Petit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of information is multifaceted. According to the case, it is a simple signal or already knowledge. lt responds to codes and is inscribed into a social relationship. There are clearly many perspectives which the social sciences can take to analyse the notion of information. The economy cannot account for the majority of situations where, in the activities of production, consumption or exchange, the notion of information finds itself implied, although each school of thought has its own understanding of the notion of information. This book takes this observation as a starting point and goes on to clarify a contemporary debate on the economy of information which remains quite vague, making use of the ways in which different theoretical approaches deal with information. To seize the nature and scope of the transformations in our societies, a consequence of our new ways of handling, stocking and circulating information in the workings of the markets like Organisations, such a theoretical exercise seems useful. The organisation of the book results from this choice. The contributions gathered in one part deal with the role of information in the functioning of the markets, those featuring in another are more interested in the organisations. To favour an enriching cross-reading of approaches developed in the two sections already referred to, we have preceded these with a section gathering approaches (which are more transversal) developing different theories of information (according to perspectives which are, respectively, systematic, statistical or strategic).
Book Synopsis Recherches ouvertes sur le numérique by : PAPY Fabrice
Download or read book Recherches ouvertes sur le numérique written by PAPY Fabrice and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Identification, Adaptation, Learning written by Sergio Bittanti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-07-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects the lectures given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute From Identijication to Learning held in Villa Olmo, Como, Italy, from August 22 to September 2, 1994. The school was devoted to the themes of Identijication, Adaptation and Learning, as they are currently understood in the Information and Contral engineering community, their development in the last few decades, their inter connections and their applications. These titles describe challenging, exciting and rapidly growing research areas which are of interest both to contral and communication engineers and to statisticians and computer scientists. In accordance with the general goals of the Institute, and notwithstanding the rat her advanced level of the topics discussed, the presentations have been generally kept at a fairly tutorial level. For this reason this book should be valuable to a variety of rearchers and to graduate students interested in the general area of Control, Signals and Information Pracessing. As the goal of the school was to explore a common methodologicalline of reading the issues, the flavor is quite interdisciplinary. We regard this as an original and valuable feature of this book.

Book Synopsis Posthuman Glossary by : Rosi Braidotti
Download or read book Posthuman Glossary written by Rosi Braidotti and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If art, science, and the humanities have shared one thing, it was their common engagement with constructions and representations of the human. Under the pressure of new contemporary concerns, however, we are experiencing a “posthuman condition”; the combination of new developments-such as the neoliberal economics of global capitalism, migration, technological advances, environmental destruction on a mass scale, the perpetual war on terror and extensive security systems- with a troublesome reiteration of old, unresolved problems that mean the concept of the human as we had previously known it has undergone dramatic transformations. The Posthuman Glossary is a volume providing an outline of the critical terms of posthumanity in present-day artistic and intellectual work. It builds on the broad thematic topics of Anthropocene/Capitalocene, eco-sophies, digital activism, algorithmic cultures and security and the inhuman. It outlines potential artistic, intellectual, and activist itineraries of working through the complex reality of the 'posthuman condition', and creates an understanding of the altered meanings of art vis-à-vis critical present-day developments. It bridges missing links across disciplines, terminologies, constituencies and critical communities. This original work will unlock the terms of the posthuman for students and researchers alike.

Book Synopsis Life Sciences, Information Sciences by : Thierry Gaudin
Download or read book Life Sciences, Information Sciences written by Thierry Gaudin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed from presentations given at the Cerisy SVSI (Sciences de la vie, sciences de l’information) conference held in 2016, this book presents a broad overview of thought and research at the intersection of life sciences and information sciences. The contributors to this edited volume explore life and information on an equal footing, with each considered as crucial to the other. In the first part of the book, the relation of life and information in the functioning of genes, at both the phylogenetic and ontogenetic levels, is articulated and the common understanding of DNA as code is problematized from a range of perspectives. The second part of the book homes in on the algorithmic nature of information, questioning the fit between life and automaton and the accompanying division between individualization and invariance. Consisting of both philosophical speculation and ethological research, the explorations in this book are a timely intervention into prevailing understandings of the relation between information and life.

Book Synopsis Spinoza and Contemporary Biology by : Henri Atlan
Download or read book Spinoza and Contemporary Biology written by Henri Atlan and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-30 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in France in 2018, Henri Atlan's book Cours de philosophie biologique et cognitiviste: Spinoza et la biologie actuelle (Odile Jacob, 2018) represents a turning point in Spinoza's interpretations of contemporary life sciences. Henri Atlan is the first in this field of research, of applied epistemology and ontology, to effectively address contemporary questions in biology and cognitive sciences. Atlan presents us with a genuine understanding of Spinoza's monism, which is neither materialistic nor idealistic, and with an expertise in contemporary life sciences that will open an entire new field of research in Spinoza scholarship as well as in philosophy of sciences. Readers will better understand the connection between Spinoza's Ethics, his ontology and epistemology, and modern life sciences, allowing us to rethink the relationship between ethics and modern sciences.
