Book Synopsis The Second Epistle of Saint Paul to the Corinthians by : Jean Hering
Download or read book The Second Epistle of Saint Paul to the Corinthians written by Jean Hering and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-30 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commentary on the Second Epistle to the Corinthians is concise and clear in presentation. Great care has been spent upon philological details and on obtaining the most probable text, but much of this material is kept out of the body of the commentary and relegated to footnotes. While all the chief commentaries on the Epistle, from St. Chrysostom to the present day, have been utilized by the author, he has deliberately avoided the undue accumulation of references and quotations, and has made his own critical assessment of earlier contributions. The student will find clear guidance for the study of the text, whether he is working with the English or Greek, and a penetrating exposition of its meaning. The more advanced scholar will appreciate the balanced judgment brought to bear upon difficult passages, and the many fresh persuasive solutions proposed. In agreement with the author's wishes, Dr. Heathcote has provided a fresh translation of the text of the Epistle, making use of the French version given by Professor Hering and embodying also the critical decisions reached in the body of the Commentary.

Book Synopsis The Disobedient Spirits and Christian Baptism by : Bo Reicke

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bo Ivar Reicke (1914Ð1987) was born and schooled in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1933 he matriculated in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Stockholm, transferring, however, in 1935 to the University of Uppsala, where in 1937 he received his degree in the areas of the history of religions and classical Greek and philosophy. From 1938 he continued his studies in the Faculty of Theology of the same university. Graduating in 1941, he became ordained in December of the same year as a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden. He immediately continued with doctoral studies, choosing the exegesis of the Old and New Testaments as his field of research. In May 1946 he presented in print and publicly defended his dissertation, The Disobedient Spirits and Christian Baptism: A Study of 1 Pet. III.19 and Its Context, [Acta Seminarii Neotestamentici Upsaliensis Edenda Curavit A. Fridrichsen, 13] (Lund 1946). In the official statement to the university, his New Testament teacher, Professor A. Fridrichsen, describes the dissertation as a weighty contribution to the solution of an old exegetical problem and goes on to recommend the author for a position on the Uppsala Faculty. In the following years, Reicke taught New Testament exegesis as assistant professor in his home faculty. In September of 1953 he received the call of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Basel, Switzerland, to fill the chair in New Testament. Moving to Basel with his family, Reicke served there for thirty years until his retirement in 1984. In addition to lecturing around the world and training about forty doctoral students, he was the author of a number of books (see below). Still actively writing and lecturing, Bo Reicke died in Basel in May of 1987.

Book Synopsis Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800 by : Mathijs Lamberigts
Download or read book Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800 written by Mathijs Lamberigts and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of an international conference entitled Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800. The conference took place in Amsterdam in April 2004 and was organized by Biblia sacra, a joint Dutch-Flemish research group. The clamor for Bibles in the vernacular flourished within lay renewal movements of the late 14th century, including groups like the Brethren and Sisters of the Common Life. In the early 16th century, humanists like Erasmus and Lefvre d'taples stimulated vernacular Bible reading. As the Protestant Reformation became established, lay Bibles were produced on a large scale. In reaction to this development, Catholic theologians issued 'orthodox' Bible translations in various vernaculars based on the Vulgate. In sum, from the 15th to the 18th century, editions from various confessional or ideological backgrounds appeared throughout Western Europe. Of course, the invention and spread of the printing press greatly enhanced the distribution of these editions. The essays collected in this volume approach Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800 from various perspectives, including the history of books, art history and church history.
