Book Synopsis L'idea costruita by : Alberto Campo Baeza
Download or read book L'idea costruita written by Alberto Campo Baeza and published by LetteraVentidue Edizioni. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis A History of Capitalist Transformation by : Giampaolo Conte
Download or read book A History of Capitalist Transformation written by Giampaolo Conte and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Capitalist Transformation: A Critique of Liberal-Capitalist Reforms highlights how, since the recent financial crises, the expression ‘liberal reform’ has entered common parlance as an evocative image of austerity and economic malaise, especially for the working classes and a segment of the middle class. But what exactly does ‘liberal reform’ refer to? The research analyzes the historical origins of liberal-capitalist reformism using a critical approach, starting with the origins of the Industrial Revolution. The book demonstrates that the chief purpose of such reforms was to integrate semi-peripheral states into the capitalist world-economy by imposing, both directly and indirectly, the adoption of rules, institutions, attitudes, and procedures amenable to economic and political interests of capitalist élites and hegemonic states – Britain first, the United States later – between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. As such, the reforms became an active tool used to promote social-economical-financial institutions, norms, and lifestyles typical of a liberal-capitalist economic order which locates some of its founding values in capital accumulation, profit-seeking, and social transformation. This book will be of significant interest to readers on capitalism, political economy, the history of the global economy, and British history.

Book Synopsis Translating Empire by : Sophus A. Reinert
Download or read book Translating Empire written by Sophus A. Reinert and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have traditionally used the discourses of free trade and laissez faire to explain the development of political economy during the Enlightenment. But from Sophus Reinert’s perspective, eighteenth-century political economy can be understood only in the context of the often brutal imperial rivalries then unfolding in Europe and its former colonies and the positive consequences of active economic policy. The idea of economic emulation was the prism through which philosophers, ministers, reformers, and even merchants thought about economics, as well as industrial policy and reform, in the early modern period. With the rise of the British Empire, European powers and others sought to selectively emulate the British model. In mapping the general history of economic translations between 1500 and 1849, and particularly tracing the successive translations of the Bristol merchant John Cary’s seminal 1695 Essay on the State of England, Reinert makes a compelling case for the way that England’s aggressively nationalist policies, especially extensive tariffs and other intrusive market interventions, were adopted in France, Italy, Germany, and Scandinavia before providing the blueprint for independence in the New World. Relatively forgotten today, Cary’s work served as the basis for an international move toward using political economy as the prime tool of policymaking and industrial expansion. Reinert’s work challenges previous narratives about the origins of political economy and invites the current generation of economists to reexamine the foundations, and future, of their discipline.

Book Synopsis Simone Luzzatto’s Scepticism in the Context of Early Modern Thought by :
Download or read book Simone Luzzatto’s Scepticism in the Context of Early Modern Thought written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-03-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the most recent research on Jewish scepticism was inspired by the work of the early modern Venetian rabbi Simone Luzzatto, the first thinker in the history of Jewish thought to declare himself a sceptic and a follower of the New Academy. This collected volume shines new light on the intimate relationship between Luzzatto’s sceptical thinking and an era marked by paradoxes and contrasts between religious devotion and scientific rationalism, as well as between the rabbinic-biblical Jewish tradition and the open tendency towards engagement with non-Jewish philosophical, literary, scientific, and theological cultures. It plots out an original path along which to understand Luzzatto’s scepticism by pointing to the various facets of being a Jewish sceptic in seventeenth-century Italy.
Book Synopsis Resources, Production and Structural Dynamics by : Mauro L. Baranzini
Download or read book Resources, Production and Structural Dynamics written by Mauro L. Baranzini and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists since the First Industrial Revolution have been interested in the links between economic growth and resources, often pointing to resource scarcities as a hindrance to growth. Offering a counter perspective, this volume highlights the positive role that scarcities can play in inducing technical progress and economic growth. It outlines a structural framework for the political economy of scarcity and rents, and offers a novel way of organizing the evidence concerning the role of resources in industrial growth. This book proposes a major shift in the treatment of scarcity issues by focusing on bottlenecks and opportunities arising within the production system, and will appeal to economists and policy makers interested in the role of resources as triggers of structural change.
Book Synopsis The Future of the Welfare State by : Bent Greve
Download or read book The Future of the Welfare State written by Bent Greve and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common belief is that the European welfare states are in a position of crisis or heading towards one with the process of globalization removing any hopes of eventual worldwide welfare. This book challenges this assumption arguing that a proper understanding of the future role of the welfare state requires a broader social perspective that encompasses the interaction of economic, political and social processes. The Future of the Welfare State provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the practical and theoretical challenges which the welfare state (and progress towards world welfare) can and must meet in the future.
