Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: LA PRESENTE ETUDE A UN DOUBLE OBJECTIF : MONTRER COMMENT S'EST PERPETUE L'ART ORATOIRE DANS LA CULTURE OCCIDENTALE, ET PLUS PARTICULIEREMENT DANS LA LITTERATURE FRANCAISE ; ET DRESSER UN PARALLELE ENTRE RHETORIQUE ET ROMAN CONTEMPORAIN. LES CONCLUSIONS QUI RESSORTENT DE NOS ANALYSES PEUVENT ETRE RESUMEES COMME SUIT : A) EN PREMIER LIEU, IL N'Y A PAS LIEU DE PARLER D'UN DECLIN DE LA RHETORIQUE. LES AVATARS QUE CETTE DISCIPLINE A CONNUS SONT DUS ESSENTIELLEMENT A L'AMBIGUITE DE SON STATUT. D'UN COTE, ELLE LEGIFERE LES DIFFERENTS MOYENS ET PREUVES DE PERSUASION ET D'UN AUTRE, ELLE IMPLIQUE UNE THEORIE DU LANGAGE EN METTANT L'ACCENT SUR LE STYLE QUI DOIT ETRE APPROPRIE A CHAQUE GENRE DU DISCOURS. C'EST L'ELOCUTIO QUI S'OCCUPE DE CETTE PARTIE DANS LA TECHNIQUE-RHETORIQUE ; B) LA CONFUSION ENTRE RHETORIQUE ET LITTERATURE, ET SA RESTRICTION A UNE THEORIE DES FIGURES VIENNENT DU FAIT DE L'IMPORTANCE ACCRUE QUE L'ON ACCORDA A L'ELOCUTIO. L'ABOUTISSEMENT ULTIME DE CETTE RESTRICTION APPARAIT CLAIREMENT DANS LA NEO-RHETORIQUE STRUCTURALE ; C) MAIS CETTE RESTRICTION N'EST QUE LA FACE VISIBLE QUE LES HISTORIENS ONT RETENUE EN FAIT, LA RHETORIQUE N'A PAS CESSE D'ETRE EN RELATION CONSTANTE AVEC LES AUTRES DISCOURS DU SAVOIR. ELLE A PARFOIS CONTRIBUE A LEUR REORGANISATION. EN OUTRE, ON MESURE SON IMPACT DANS L'ENSEIGNEMENT PRODIGUE PAR LES JESUITES DES LE 16E SIECLE, AINSI QUE DANS LES MANUELS SCOLAIRES DU 19E SIECLE. D) ENFIN, SON IMPACT SE MANIFESTE AUJOURD'HUI AUSSI BIEN DANS LES PROPOS THEORIQUES DES NOUVEAUX ROMANCIERS, QUE DANS L'ORGANISATION INTERNE DE LEURS OEUVRES. NOUS SOMMES DONC EN PRESENCE D'UNE "NOUVELLE RHETORIQUE" QUI SE REPERCUTE DANS LES POSTULATS QUI GOUVERNENT LES ANALYSES DE LA NOUVELLE CRITIQUE. THEORIE ET PRATIQUE SONT AINSI INTIMEMENT LIEES DANS LA REFLEXION CONTEMPORAINE SUR LES POSSIBILITES CREATIVES DE LA LITTERATURE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quiet revolution is taking place in avant-garde French poetry and prose. In this collection of twelve interviews with some of France's most important poets and writers, Serge Gavronsky introduces American readers to these exciting new developments. As Gavronsky explains, a neolyricism is now replacing the formalism of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s. In his substantial introduction, Gavronsky notes how the ideological definition of writing (écriture) has given way to more open forms of writing. Human experiences of the most ordinary kinds are finding a place in the text. These interviews offer a view of the poets' and writers' creative processes and range over such topics as current literary theory, the impact of American poetry in France, and the place of feminism in contemporary French writing. Each interview is accompanied by samples of the writer's work in French and in Gavronsky's English translations. Toward a New Poetics provides a highly informative cultural and critical perspective on contemporary writing in France, introducing us to works which are now transforming the idea of literature itself.

Book excerpt: Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) is an exciting research enterprise in which scholars are concerned with the discursive reproduction of power and inequality. However, researchers in CDS are increasingly recognising the need to investigate the cognitive dimensions of discourse and context if they want to fully account for any connection between language, legitimisation and social action. This book presents a collection of papers in CDS concerned with various ideological discourses. Analyses are firmly rooted in linguistics and cognition constitutes a major focus of attention. The chapters, which are written by prominent researchers in CDS, come from a broad range of theoretical perspectives spanning pragmatics, cognitive psychology and cognitive linguistics. The book is essential reading for anyone working at the cutting edge of CDS and especially for those wishing to explore the central place that cognition must surely hold in the relationship between discourse and society.

Book excerpt: Second-person storytelling is a continually present and diverse technique in the history of literature that appears only once in the oeuvre of an author. Based on key narratives of the post-war period, Evgenia Iliopoulou approaches the phenomenon in an inductive way, starting out from the essentials of grammar and rhetoric, and aims to improve the general understanding of second-person narrative within literature. In its various forms and typologies, the second person amplifies and expands the limits of representation, thus remaining a narrative enigma: a small narrative gesture - with major narrative impact.

With this seemingly simple conceit, the characters of The Planetarium are set in orbit and a galaxy of argument, resentment, and bitterness erupts. Telling the story from various points of view, Sarraute focuses below the surface, on the emotional lives of the characters in a way that surpasses even Virginia Woolf. Always deeply engaging, The Planetarium reveals the deep disparity between the way we see ourselves and the way others see us.

Book excerpt: Experimentation and the Lyric in Contemporary French Poetry offers a new theoretical approach and historical perspective on the remarkable upsurge in creative poetic practices in France that have challenged traditional definitions of poetry and of the lyric. Focusing on the work of Pierre Alferi, Olivier Cadiot, Emmanuel Hocquard, Franck Leibovici, Anne Portugal and Denis Roche, this book provides an analysis of the most influential poets in French poetry of the last few decades. It contextualizes the theoretical models that inform their investigations, analyzing them alongside the history of the avant-garde and the heated theoretical debates that have taken place over whether to continue or bring an end to the lyric. Systematically addressing the various strategies employed by these poets and drawing on reception theory and cognitive studies, Jeff Barda argues that French radical poetics re-evaluates the lyric in cognitive terms beyond the personal. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in twenty-first-century forms of experimental writing and the connections between literature and the arts today.

Book excerpt: The topic of this volume was discussed at a Round Table of the International Association for Dialogue Analysis (IADA) at the University of Bologna in March 1995. The Round Table was intended to make a scientific contribution in honour of the president's 65th birthday. The topic refers on the one hand to the central problem of 'Dialogue Analysis' which is to discover a new, communicatively functioning unit after having left behind the unit of the sentence which can be considered the unit par excellence of structural linguistics. On the other hand, it includes the manifold units, relations, and strategies, i.e. the specific problems of dialogue analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Origins of Comics: From William Hogarth to Winsor McCay, Thierry Smolderen presents a cultural landscape whose narrative differs in many ways from those presented by other historians of the comic strip. Rather than beginning his inquiry with the popularly accepted "sequential art" definition of the comic strip, Smolderen instead wishes to engage with the historical dimensions that inform that definition. His goal is to understand the processes that led to the twentieth-century comic strip, the highly recognizable species of picture stories that he sees crystallizing around 1900 in the United States. Featuring close readings of the picture stories, caricatures, and humoristic illustrations of William Hogarth, Rodolphe Töpffer, Gustave Doré, and their many contemporaries, Smolderen establishes how these artists were immersed in a very old visual culture in which images—satirical images in particular—were deciphered in a way that was often described as hieroglyphical. Across eight chapters, he acutely points out how the effect of the printing press and the mass advent of audiovisual technologies (photography, audio recording, and cinema) at the end of the nineteenth century led to a new twentieth-century visual culture. In tracing this evolution, Smolderen distinguishes himself from other comics historians by following a methodology that explains the present state of the form of comics on the basis of its history, rather than presenting the history of the form on the basis of its present state. This study remaps the history of this influential art form.

Book excerpt: This instructive and entertaining social history of American newspapers shows that the very idea of impartial, objective “news” was the social product of the democratization of political, economic, and social life in the nineteenth century. Professor Schudson analyzes the shifts in reportorial style over the years and explains why the belief among journalists and readers alike that newspapers must be objective still lives on.
