Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document's purpose is to spell out the Church's understanding of the nature of revelation--the process whereby God communicates with human beings. It touches upon questions about Scripture, tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church. The major concern of the document is to proclaim a Catholic understanding of the Bible as the "word of God." Key elements include: Trinitarian structure, roles of apostles and bishops, and biblical reading in a historical context.
Book Synopsis Liturgy as Revelation by : Philip Caldwell
Download or read book Liturgy as Revelation written by Philip Caldwell and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical issue in modern Catholic theology has been the relationship between the doctrine of revelation and the church’s liturgical and sacramental practice. This volume argues that although in the twentieth century Catholic theology increasingly recognized the centrality of Christology—particularly the person of Christ—as the locus of revelation and drew out the crucial implications of Christ as the revelation of God, it was slow to connect this revelatory dynamic with the encounter that occurs within the sacramental space of the liturgy, most notably the Eucharist. Taking the decline of the neoscholastic enterprise in Catholic theology and the challenges posed by modernism as his point of departure, Philip Caldwell traces the evolution of the Catholic theology of revelation in the twentieth century and the vital role played by the liturgical and sacramental renewal movements in reimagining this pivotal theological category. Examining the specific contributions of René Latourelle, Avery Dulles, Salvatore Marsilli, and Gustave Martelet against a background of pre-conciliar ressourcement theology, this volume provides a comprehensive account of why a Trinitarian and Christological construal of liturgy and sacraments as revelation is key to the vision that informed Vatican II and offers constructive theological and ecclesial possibilities for the future.
Book Synopsis Thinking Through Revelation by : Robert J. Dobie
Download or read book Thinking Through Revelation written by Robert J. Dobie and published by Catholic University of America Press. This book was released on 2019-01-09 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navigating the seemingly competing claims of human reason and divine revelation to truth is without a doubt one of the central problems of medieval philosophy. Medieval thinkers argued a whole gamut of positions on the proper relation of religious faith to human reason. Thinking Through Revelation attempts to ask deeper questions: what possibilities for philosophical thought did divine revelation open up for medieval thinkers? How did the contents of the sacred scriptures of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam put into question established philosophical assumptions? But most fundamentally, how did not merely the content of the sacred books but the very mode in which revelation itself is understood to come to us – as a book “sent down” from on high, as a covenant between God and his people, or as incarnate person - create or foreclose possibilities for the resolution of the philosophical problems that the Abrahamic revelations themselves raised?

This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book L’imaginaire du démoniaque dans la Septante written by Anna Angelini and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a thorough analysis of demons in the Hebrew Bible and Septuagint in the wider context of the ancient Near East and the Greek world. Taking a fresh and innovative angle of enquiry, Anna Angelini investigates continuities and changes in the representation of divine powers in Hellenistic Judaism, thereby revealing the role of the Greek translation of the Bible in shaping ancient demonology, angelology, and pneumatology. Combining philological and semantic analyses with a historical approach and anthropological insights, the author both develops a new method for analyzing religious categories within biblical traditions and sheds new light on the importance of the Septuagint for the history of ancient Judaism.
Book Synopsis The "Sense of the Faith" in History by : John J. Burkhard, OFM Conv.
Download or read book The "Sense of the Faith" in History written by John J. Burkhard, OFM Conv. and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While taught by Vatican II, the “sense of the faith” (sensus fidei) has had little official impact in the Catholic Church. What would the church look like if it took this conciliar teaching to heart? To address this neglect, John Burkhard locates the historical roots of the teaching and its emergence at Vatican II. It attempts to better understand the “sense of the faith” in the light of other fundamental teachings of the council and challenges the hierarchical church to invite all the faithful to rightfully participate in the prophetic ministry of the whole church, closely allied with Pope Francis’s call for a more synodal church.
Book Synopsis Christ and Creation by : Noel O'Sullivan
Download or read book Christ and Creation written by Noel O'Sullivan and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to interpret Henri de Lubac's theology of creation from a christological perspective. The challenge of this research has been the absence of a systematic christology in the writings of de Lubac. Yet it is possible to posit a Lubacian christology by sifting through the author's work on a myriad of subjects. The point of entry is the patristic distinction between 'image' and 'likeness', whereby 'image' is understood as an inamissible seal which bestows the divine prerogatives of reason, freedom, immortality and dominion over nature. 'Likeness' is a potential given at creation and realised in the course of the economy of salvation. De Lubac describes it variously as divinisation, divine union, the supernatural dignity of the human being, and participation in the internal movement of the Trinity. The originality of this book consists in the gradual emergence of the role of Christ in the process whereby image becomes likeness. De Lubac records his intention to publish a book on Jesus Christ, an ambition he never realised. The present book does not just illustrate the omnipresence of Christ in the writings of de Lubac but dares to delineate what a Lubacian christology would look like.
Book Synopsis The Historical Backgrounds of Early Methodist Enthusiasm by : Umphrey Lee
Download or read book The Historical Backgrounds of Early Methodist Enthusiasm written by Umphrey Lee and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God really communicate his will to individuals, so that they receive infallible guidance in that sense which the ancient Greeks called "enthusiasm"? Both the Old Testament and the New maintain that the true prophets received direct advices from God, which, regardless of consequences, they were morally bound to communicate even to the skeptical among their contemporaries. The recent canonization of Joan of Arc is a fresh proof that the Catholics believe in the possibility of private revelations. Luther, Calvin and the English Reformers were hostile to those Anabaptists and others who alleged they were actually receiving new revelations; and early Massachusetts felt that the most dangerous of Anne Hutchinson's heresies was her claim to immediate inspiration; for the "motions" she followed might not be those of God but the Devil. Dr. Lee sketches the belief in direct inspiration from its Hebraic and Greek roots down to the time of the French Prophets who amazed London. Early Methodism arose in such an atmosphere. He has, therefore, examined the early records of the Methodist movement and gathered evidence from its friends and from its enemies to answer the question: How far did some of the early Methodists believe that they were directly moved by God?
Book Synopsis Mystery of God, Mystery of Christ by : Ysabel de Andia
Download or read book Mystery of God, Mystery of Christ written by Ysabel de Andia and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in English for the first time, Ysabel de Andia’s double exploration of Christian and Hindu mysticism provides a valuable addition to the field. Composed from lectures given in Benares in 2015 to priests of the Missions Étrangères de Paris, Mystery of God, Mystery of Christ combines the two main research interests that have defined de Andia’s career: first, an understanding of Christian mysticism as growing out of the Christian mystery of Christ and the sacrament, and secondly, the relationship between this and Hindu contemplative prayer as articulated by Jules Monchanin. Beginning with the Cappadocian fathers, de Andai traces the developing interpretation of Mystery through Christian thinkers from Origen and Gregory of Nyssa to Basil and Dionysios the Areopagite. From here, she begins to dovetail this study with an exploration of Hindu contemplation, relating the Carmelite mystic St John of the Cross to the Advaitist tradition, especially as expounded by Shankara. Throughout, her masterful understanding of both traditions is apparent. For English readers, her insight will provide a fresh perspective on this lively subject area.

Book Synopsis God's Word and the Church's Council by : Christopher Monaghan
Download or read book God's Word and the Church's Council written by Christopher Monaghan and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2014-07-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of the Vatican II document on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum) was an exciting and challenging moment for the Church. While honouring the tradition, it also marked a quite dramatic development in the Church's attitude to modern critical analysis of the Bible and encouraged study and reflection on it by all members of the Church. The golden jubilee of its publication is a timely moment for a book such as this. It contains essays on various aspects of Dei Verbum by authors from around the world. They write from the perspective of their respective disciplines of biblical studies, patristics, theology, liturgy, philosophy, and communications media. They situate the document within the Jewish-Christian tradition, assess its reception since Vatican II, and its implications for the future.

Book Synopsis The Love of God Poured Out: Grace and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in St. Thomas Aquinas by : John Meinert
Download or read book The Love of God Poured Out: Grace and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in St. Thomas Aquinas written by John Meinert and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the action of grace? John Meinert’s The Love of God Poured Out enters into the major positions and debates within Thomism to forge a new synthesis on this topic within the greater body of scholarship existing today. Meinert reads Aquinas’s thought on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and grace in an integral and analogous way. Not only does The Love of God Poured Out aid scholars in understanding Aquinas’s thought on these two issues, it also once more clarifies the truth that the Holy Spirit and his gifts are neither a devout appendix to moral theology nor a pious nod to tradition. They are the heart and height of the moral life, a life lived subditus Deo.
