Book Synopsis La Répression des homosexuels au Québec et en France by : Patrice Corriveau
Download or read book La Répression des homosexuels au Québec et en France written by Patrice Corriveau and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-03-07 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, the first same-sex couple legally married in Quebec. How did homosexuality – an act that had for centuries been defined as abominable and criminal – come to be sanctioned by law? Judging Homosexuals finds answers in a comparative analysis of gay persecution in France and Quebec, places that share a common culture but have diverging legal traditions. In both settings, Patrice Corriveau explores how various groups – family and clergy, doctors and jurists – tried to manage people who were defined in turn as sinners, as criminals, as inverts, and as citizens to be protected by law. By bringing to light the various discourses that have over time supported the control and persecution of individual homoerotic behaviour in France and Quebec, this book makes the case that when it came to managing sexuality, the law helped construct the crime.

Book Synopsis Queer Mobilizations by : Manon Tremblay
Download or read book Queer Mobilizations written by Manon Tremblay and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since certain homosexual acts were decriminalized in 1969, queer activists have fought for – and won – a series of public policy battles in governments across Canada. As Queer Mobilizations shows, anti-discrimination legislation, the extension of benefits to same-sex couples, the right to marry, adoption rights, and the protection of gay-straight alliances in schools did not result from a single act nor from the work of a single organization but rather from the concerted efforts of many people, in many places, over many years. This volume examines the relationships between LGBTQ activists and local, provincial, and federal governments. The contributors explore how various governments have tried to regulate and repress LGBTQ movements, and how, in turn, queer activists have successfully shaped public policy, across the political spectrum, from city halls to the House of Commons.
Book Synopsis L’Homosexualité masculine au Québec by : Serge Fisette
Download or read book L’Homosexualité masculine au Québec written by Serge Fisette and published by Québec Amerique. This book was released on 2021-10-12T00:00:00-04:00 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Grossières indécences by : Domenic Dagenais
Download or read book Grossières indécences written by Domenic Dagenais and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Lesbian and Gay Movement and the State by : David Paternotte
Download or read book The Lesbian and Gay Movement and the State written by David Paternotte and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By analyzing the relationship between lesbian and gay movements and the state, this ground-breaking book addresses two interconnected issues: to what extent is the lesbian and gay movement influenced by the state and, to a lesser extent, whether the lesbian and gay movement has somehow influenced the state, for instance by altering forms of sexual regulation. Given the diversity in national trajectories, this book covers fifteen countries. This enables the volume to shed light on different kinds of relationships between these groups and the state, as well as on the way they have evolved in recent decades. The Lesbian and Gay Movement and the State: Comparative Insights into a Transformed Relationship fills an important gap in the literature on lesbian and gay activism. However, this book also provides important and innovative insights into broader issues in international political science, public policy and comparative politics, as well as issues in social movement studies. These include the role of the state in constructing citizen identities, the heteronormative way in which many traditional citizen entitlements and benefits were constructed, state - civil society relations, judicial activism, the impact of federalism, and the increasing globalization of sexual identities.

Download or read book Histories of Sexology written by Alain Giami and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histories of Sexology: Between Science and Politics takes an interdisciplinary and reflexive approach to the historiography of sexology. Drawing on an intellectual history perspective informed by recent developments in science and technology studies and political history of science, this book examines specific social, cultural, intellectual, scientific and political contexts that have given shape to theories of sexuality, but also to practices in medicine, psychology, education and sexology. Furthermore, it explores various ways that theories of sexuality have both informed and been produced by sexologies—as scientific and clinical discourses about sex—in Western countries since the 19th century.

Book excerpt: They discuss how young men are drawn to gang life, how young girls become attracted and attached to the gang members who eventually sell them into prostitution, and why it is so hard to infiltrate and dismantle the distinct but interrelated worlds of the procurer, victim, and client. Rooted firmly in first person testimony, this research deepens our understanding of juvenile prostitution by identifying and exploring the types of motivations and circumstances that lead teenagers into prostitution rings.
