Book Synopsis L’âghâ khân et les Khojah by : Michel Boivin
Download or read book L’âghâ khân et les Khojah written by Michel Boivin and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Other Shiites by : Alessandro Monsutti
Download or read book The Other Shiites written by Alessandro Monsutti and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shia Islam is a central issue in contemporary politics. Often associated with Iran, Shiite communities actually exist in many Islamic countries. Focusing on the «other Shiites» outside Iran, this book offers a survey of their diversity and multiplicity in the last two centuries. The contributions cover three major topics. The first part deals with the relationship of Shia minorities to the Sunni regimes. Secondly the public affirmation of their identities through specific rituals and social attitudes is analysed. Finally, the third part of this volume examines the strengthening of these identities through traditional religious rituals and cultural performances, or through the re-interpretation and adaptation of these to present-day life. Coming from various academic backgrounds, the authors have used different methodologies and have been engaged in field-work.

Book Synopsis Interpreting the Sindhi World by : Michel Boivin
Download or read book Interpreting the Sindhi World written by Michel Boivin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years, there has not been a project that consolidates international university-level scholarship on Sindh and Sindhis into a single forum. This book seeks to unite the wide community of scholars who work on Sindh and with Sindhis. The book's interdisciplinary focus is onhistory and society. It represents a 'snap shot' of contemporary research from different disciplines and locations. It combines interdisciplinary and multi-local approaches to describe the diversity of Sindh's 'voices' and to raise questions about how they are historically and socio-culturallydefined. Conventional studies of Sindh and Sindhis often bend the region and its people upon themselves to analyze society and history. This collection of essays treats Sindh and its people not as isolated regional entities, but rather entries in a wider socio-cultural and historical web. Sindhisare a global community and this collection generates new perspectives on them by integrating detailed studies on Pakistan with those from India and the diaspora. Such an approach contrasts with other writings by celebrating rather than erasing multi-cultural faces from Sindh's human tapestry. Byrethreading unheard socio-cultural and historical voices into understanding Sindh and its people, this collection disputes the vision of Sindhis as a monolithic Muslim population in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Book Synopsis Ismaili Hymns from South Asia by : Zawahir Moir
Download or read book Ismaili Hymns from South Asia written by Zawahir Moir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aga Khans have long played a prominent part on the international stage, but much less tends to be understood about the most important group of their followers, the Khoja Ismailis of South Asia, who are now also settled in many other parts of the world. Even less is generally known about the hymns, called ginans, which have historically formed so central an element in the religious life and rituals of the Ismaili community. The principal aim of this anthology is to fill this gap by providing a sympathetic introduction to this still largely unexplored tradition of South Asian devotional literature, and to draw attention to the many features of remarkable interest which it contains.
Book Synopsis Nationalism, Transnationalism, and Political Islam by : Mohanad Hage Ali
Download or read book Nationalism, Transnationalism, and Political Islam written by Mohanad Hage Ali and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2018-08-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on how Hizbullah has transformed religious rituals and supernatural narratives in order to mobilize the Shi’a community. The author examines how Hizbullah has altered its institutional structure and reconstructed Lebanese Shi’a history in a manner similar to that of nationalist movements. Through fieldwork and research, the project finds that Hizbullah has centralized around the concept of Wilayat al-Fagih (Gaurdianship of the Islamic Jurists): in essence, the absolute authority of Iran’s Supreme Leader over the Shi’a “nation.”
Book Synopsis Songs of Wisdom and Circles of Dance by : Tazim R. Kassam
Download or read book Songs of Wisdom and Circles of Dance written by Tazim R. Kassam and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1995-08-17 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coursing though cultures and time, tuneful verse has given moving expression to the human longing for the divine. As poetry strung on sweet melodies, hymns bear testimony to the religious life of the devout, and to the inspiring teachings of minstrels and saints. Such is the ginan tradition of the Satpanth Isma'ilis, Indian successors of the Fatand Nizari Isma'ili sect of the Shi'ah Muslims. Traditionally recited during daily ritual prayers, ginans have been revered for generations among the Satpanth Isma'ilis as sacred compositions. This work offers for the first time an extensive translation of hymns attributed to the Isma'ili saint-composer, Pir Shams (ca. 13th century), who is at once one of the most pivotal and yet most enigmatic figures of this literary tradition. It also presents a cogent historical reconstruction of the beginnings of Satpanth Isma'ilism--a phase of Isma'ili history that has spanned over eight centuries.
Book Synopsis The Sufi Orders in Islam by : J. Spencer Trimingham
Download or read book The Sufi Orders in Islam written by J. Spencer Trimingham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-07-16 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufism, the name given to Islamic mysticism, has been the subject of many studies, but the orders through which the organizational aspect of the Sufi spirit was expressed has been neglected. The Sufi Orders in Islam is one of the earliest modern examinations of the historical development of Sufism and is considered a classic work in numerous sources of Islamic studies today. Here, author J. Spencer Trimingham offers a clear and detailed account of the formation and development of the Sufi schools and orders (tariqahs) from the second century of Islam until modern times. Trimingham focuses on the practical disciplines behind the mystical aspects of Sufism which initially attracted a Western audience. He shows how Sufism developed and changed, traces its relationship to the unfolding and spread of mystical ideas, and describes in sharp detail its rituals and ceremonial practices. Finally, he assesses the influence of these Sufi orders upon Islamic society in general. John O. Voll has added a new introduction to this classic text and provides readers with an updated list of further reading. The Sufi Orders in Islam will appeal not only to those already familiar with Triminghams groundbreaking research, but also to the growing reading public of Islamic studies and mysticism.
Download or read book Iran written by Michael M. J. Fischer and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2003-07-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike much of the instant analysis that appeared at the time of the Iranian revolution, Iran: From Religious Dispute to Revolution is based upon extensive fieldwork carried out in Iran. Michael M. J. Fischer draws upon his rich experience with the mullahs and their students in the holy city of Qum, composing a picture of Iranian society from the inside—the lives of ordinary people, the way that each class interprets Islam, and the role of religion and religious education in the culture. Fischer’s book, with its new introduction updating arguments for the post-Revolutionary period, brings a dynamic view of a society undergoing metamorphosis, which remains fundamental to understanding Iranian society in the early twenty-first century.
