Book Synopsis French Indo-China by : Virginia Thompson
Download or read book French Indo-China written by Virginia Thompson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1937, French Indo- China presents a comprehensive account in English of the French colonization of Indo-China. The book does not attempt to give a chronological story nor has the same organization of material being used for all the countries studied. Rather, the aim has been to present cross sections of the problem as a method of studying mutual influences and reciprocal reactions. It discusses themes like history of Annam; the French administration of Indo-China; the economy of Indo- China; Indo-Chinese literature; Cambodia, Laos and the primitive tribes; and reaction to the French colonization of Indo-China. This book is an important reference work on French colonial history.

Book Synopsis Civil Law Reforms in Post-Colonial Asia by : Yuka Kaneko
Download or read book Civil Law Reforms in Post-Colonial Asia written by Yuka Kaneko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the legal systems of the late-developing countries of ASEAN (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam, often referred to as the CLMV countries). These nations are apt to be placed in an economically disadvantageous situation within the opportunity of communalization of legal systems being advanced by the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) launched in 2015, and the book clarifies the dynamics of the changes within these legal systems. Concurrently, there is an intention to analyze the “legal system development support” that has continued to be provided to these countries since the mid-1990s via international development support from international organizations and developed countries including Japan. In particular, the emphasis has been on the area of civil law, where the main subject of Japan’s support has been centered on the civil code and civil procedure code. The legal system of the recipient country is complicated by the crisscrossing of the remnants of previous eras, from the inherent laws that have existed since before colonization, the laws of the colonial powers that were introduced during the colonial era (French law in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam; English law in Myanmar), the influence of socialist law after independence from colonization, and the path of modern industrialization and development, such that one country's legal system is the combination of all of these influences. For the reader to understand the dynamics of these changing laws, each chapter of the book combines two methodological perspectives. The first is to ascertain the spatial range as to how far the civil law extends across social phenomena. The second is a historical perspective in which the trends in legal changes will be understood on a time axis.
Book Synopsis Rubber and the Making of Vietnam by : Michitake Aso
Download or read book Rubber and the Making of Vietnam written by Michitake Aso and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dating back to the nineteenth-century transplantation of a latex-producing tree from the Amazon to Southeast Asia, rubber production has wrought monumental changes worldwide. During a turbulent Vietnamese past, rubber transcended capitalism and socialism, colonization and decolonization, becoming a key commodity around which life and history have revolved. In this pathbreaking study, Michitake Aso narrates how rubber plantations came to dominate the material and symbolic landscape of Vietnam and its neighbors, structuring the region's environment of conflict and violence. Tracing the stories of agronomists, medical doctors, laborers, and leaders of independence movements, Aso demonstrates how postcolonial socialist visions of agriculture and medicine were informed by their colonial and capitalist predecessors in important ways. As rubber cultivation funded infrastructural improvements and the creation of a skilled labor force, private and state-run plantations became landscapes of oppression, resistance, and modernity. Synthesizing archival material in English, French, and Vietnamese, Aso uses rubber plantations as a lens to examine the entanglements of nature, culture, and politics and demonstrates how the demand for rubber has impacted nearly a century of war and, at best, uneasy peace in Vietnam.

Book Synopsis Hà Nội, a Metropolis in the Making by : Collectif
Download or read book Hà Nội, a Metropolis in the Making written by Collectif and published by IRD Éditions. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built on 'the bend in the Red River', Hà Nội is among Southeast Asia's most ancient capitals. Over the centuries, it took shape in part from a dense substratum of villages. With the economic liberalisation of the 1980s, it encountered several obstacles to its expansion: absence of a real land market, high population densities, the government's food self-suffciency policy that limits expropriations of land and the water management constraints of this very vulnerable delta. Since the beginning of the new millennium, the change in speed brought about by the state and by property developers in the construction and urban planning of the province-capital poses the problem of integration of in situ urbanised villages, the importance of preserving a green belt around Hà Nội and the necessity of protection from flooding. The harmonious fusion of city and countryside, which has always constituted the Red River Delta's defining feature, appears to be in jeopardy. Working from a rich body of maps and field studies, this collective work reveals how this grass-roots urbanisation encounters 'top-down' urbanisation, or metropolisation. By combining a variety of disciplinary approaches on several different scales, through a study of spatial issues and social dynamics, this atlas not only enables the reader to gauge the impact of major projects on the lives of villages integrated into the city's fabric but also to re-establish the peri-urban village stratum as a fully-fledged actor in the diversity of this emerging metropolis.
