Book excerpt: Traces the revolution that has taken place in official Christian attitudes towards the Jews, principally since the Shoah. The new reconciliatory tone is expressed in 105 Catholic and 82 Protestant declarations issued between 1945-98. The Catholic Church has taken the lead when it comes to doctrinal reforms. The Protestant Churches, headed by the Ecumenical Council, have followed. Today there is increasing Christian awareness that Christianity has its origins in Judaism. The Catholic Church, as a consequence, has rejected the idea that the alliance between God and the Jews was revoked by the advent of Christ. The Catholic Church has given up proselytizing among Jews, an activity still pursued by Protestant Churches. The existence of the State of Israel and its connection to world Jewry has caused some Christian hesitation: the Holy See has been slow in recognizing Israel, and the Protestant Churches have been reluctant to display solidarity out of fear of losing the confidence of Muslims. Third World ideology has also had an influence on the Protestant Churches.
