Book Synopsis Il Concilio Vaticano II by : Gilles Routhier
Download or read book Il Concilio Vaticano II written by Gilles Routhier and published by Vita e Pensiero. This book was released on 2007 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The death of John Paul II and the election of Benedict XVI constituted two important elements in the broad theological and cultural landscape of Catholicism. This change of pontificate has also nourished the journalistic and political dispute about Vatican II, its history and its legacy, and not only the historiographical and theological debate. But the research on Vatican II is already proceeding forward and beyond the state of knowledge about the Council reached at the end of the 90s. For 21st century Catholics and theologians interested in understanding contemporary Catholicism in the light of Vatican II the intellectual undertaking is far from accomplished yet. The book offers comprehensive presentation of the theological and historiographical debate about Council Vatican II. The attempt to go beyond "the clash of interpretations" - Vatican II as a rupture in the history of Catholicism on one side, the need to read Vatican II in continuity with the tradition on the other - is necessary indeed because the ongoing debate about Vatican II is largely misrepresented by the use of "clashing interpretations" as a tool for understanding the role of the council in present-day Catholicism.

Book Synopsis A Council for the Global Church by : Massimo Faggioli
Download or read book A Council for the Global Church written by Massimo Faggioli and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Vatican Council ended in December 1965, but Vatican II is still happening in the global church. Catholicism has always had a universal claim, but the globalization of Catholicism as a truly "world church" became part of Catholic theology only thanks to that gatheringdecided by St. John XXIIIof bishops, theologians, lay observers, ecumenical representatives, and journalists. Vatican II is the most important event in church history after the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, and it is the key to understanding Catholicism and its inner tensions today.

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II written by Catherine E. Clifford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II is a rich source of information and reflections on many aspects of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), one of the most significant religious events of the twentieth century. The chapters introduce readers to the historical context and outstanding features of the conciliar event, and its principal teachings on Scripture and Tradition, the church, liturgy, religious liberty, ecumenism, interreligious dialogue, church-world relations, and mission. Consideration is given to some neglected aspects of the council, including: the forgotten papal speeches that lay out its fundamental orientation and ought to guide its interpretation; the presence and contributions of women; and the non-reception of the council among Catholic traditionalists. Ecumenical scholars reflect on the significance of Vatican II for the life of other Christian churches and the search for Christian unity; others examine Catholic dialogue with other religious traditions. Surveying the diverse receptions of the council in the perspective of a world church, chapters focusing on Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Oceania, and Europe reflect on the interpretation and influence of the council and its teaching on the life of the church in diverse cultural contexts. This Handbook will serve as a valuable guide to one of the most important events and bodies of Catholic teaching since the Protestant Reformation and the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century, to the interpretation of the council's teaching, and to its continuing role in guiding the life of the church in the twenty-first century. .

Book excerpt: In April 2012, Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, and Paulist Press co-sponsored a conference celebrating Vatican II's Continuing agenda, focusing on the addresses given at Vatican II's conclusion that challenged the church to spread the council's message. Rather than critique the council documents, the conference explored creative ways in which the energy of the council can be marshaled in establishing the agenda and needs of the twenty-first century. Speakers included: Anthony Ciorra Massimo Faggioli R. Scott Appleby Diana Hayes Roberto Goizueta Michael Himes Sarah Heiman and Peter Denio Nancy Dallavalle John Haught Michael W. Higgins The umbrella theme for the conference was the watershed teaching of the council on the "Universal Call to Holiness." Topics include: how the council has been interpreted over the last fifty years; its vision; messages to rulers, women, the poor and suffering, artists, young people, workers, and scientists; and finally, holiness for our world today. Book excerpt: Today many books appear regarding Vatican II. Yet, only very few of them manage to locate this crucial event in the life of the twentieth century Roman Catholic Church against the broad horizon of both its prehistory and its aftermath. This book does just that. In seven chapters, this volume offers a survey of the evolution of Post-Enlightenment Catholicism, in the period spanning from ca. 1830 to the present, tying together the renewals proposed by the first and the Second Vatican Councils. Each phase in this evolution is discussed from a double angle: on the hand from the viewpoint of theological developments and milieu’s, and on the other hand from an institutional and Church historical perspective, thus binding together these two perspectives and tracing the evolutions within Catholicism in all their pluriformity.
Book Synopsis Opening Up the Scriptures by : José Granados
Download or read book Opening Up the Scriptures written by José Granados and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opening Up the Scriptures was written by a group of eminent Catholics, including Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger -- now Pope Benedict XVI. In these erudite essays the authors contend that historical-critical interpretation of Scripture has long since run its course in both Protestant and Catholic exegesis. Instead, they argue, the future of interpretation lies in accepting that the Bible is not just a collection of historical documents but also a record of revelation conceived in faith. By this token, true exegesis involves the faith and humility of the exegete. Book Synopsis Sorting Out Catholicism by : Massimo Faggioli
Download or read book Sorting Out Catholicism written by Massimo Faggioli and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expanded and thoroughly updated English edition of the Italian edition (2008), Massimo Faggioli offers us a history and broader context of the so-called ecclesial movements of which Focolare, Community of Sant'Egidio, Neocatechumenal Way, Legionaries of Christ, Communion and Liberation, and Opus Dei are only some of the most recognizable names. Their history goes back to the period following the First Vatican Council, crosses Vatican II, and develops throughout the twentieth century. It is a history that prepares the movements' rise in the last three decades, from John Paul II to Francis. These movements are a complex phenomenon that shapes the Church now more than before, and they play a key role for the future of Catholicism as a global community, in transition from a Eurocentric tradition to a world Church.

Book excerpt: Pope John XXIII prayed that the Second Vatican Council would prove to be a new Pentecost. The articles gathered here appeared originally in a series solicited by and published in Theological Studies (September 2012 to March 2014). The purpose of the series was and remains threefold: - To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council - To help readers more fully appreciate its significance not only for the Catholic Church itself but also for the entire world whom the Church encounters in proclamation and reception of ongoing revelation - In their present form, to help readers worldwide engage both the conciliar documents themselves and scholarly reflections on them, all with a view to appropriating the reform envisioned by Pope John XXIII. Download or read book True Reform written by Massimo Faggioli and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Massimo Faggioli, the debate about the meaning of Vatican II too often misses the profound significance of that council's first and perhaps most consequential document, Sacrosanctum Concilium. The result is a misunderstanding of both the council as a whole and the liturgical reform that followed from it. In True Reform, Faggioli takes Sacrosanctum Concilium as a hermeneutical key to the council. He offers a thorough reflection on the relationship between the liturgical constitution and the whole achievement of Vatican II and argues that the interconnections between the two must emerge if we want to understand the impact of the council on global Catholicism.
