Book Synopsis Inheritance in Nineteenth-century French Culture by : Andrew J. Counter
Download or read book Inheritance in Nineteenth-century French Culture written by Andrew J. Counter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transmission of wealth between generations was not only a narrative commonplace in nineteenth-century France, but also a topic of considerable cultural anxiety and intense political debate. In this study, Andrew J. Counter draws on a wealth of previously unexplored material to show how the theme of inheritance in literature and beyond acquired ethical, historical and ideological connotations, and was vital to nineteenth-century French conceptions of the family and of the legacy of the Revolution. Weaving together fiction, drama, legal texts, historiographical thought and political writing, Inheritance in Nineteenth-Century French Culture teases out a complex leitmotiv that gives us a new understanding of nineteenth- century Frances sense of its own place in history. It also proposes innovative readings of writers as familiar as Honore de Balzac, George Sand, Guy de Maupassant and Emile Zola, while drawing attention to a range of neglected authors and works.

Book Synopsis Britain, France and International Commerce by : François Crouzet
Download or read book Britain, France and International Commerce written by François Crouzet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1996 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: François Crouzet's work concentrates on the period of the second Hundred Years War between Britain and France (1689-1815). In the present volume, several chapters examine some of the economic aspects of this protracted struggle, from the role of Huguenot refugees in financing war against Louis XIV, to the impact of the Napoleonic wars in Britain and the blockade which Britain imposed on France. International trade is also a major theme, with studies on the rise of Bordeaux in the 18th century, Anglo-Brazilian trade, and of ventures in Europe by Boston merchants at the peak of the French Revolution. The final articles deal with the period after 1815, comparing business dynasties in Britain and France, and surveying the debate on the 'slowness' of French economic growth during the 19th century.
Download or read book Divagations written by Stphane Mallarm and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a book just the way I don't like them," the father of French Symbolism, Stphane Mallarm, informs the reader in his preface to Divagations: "scattered and with no architecture." On the heels of this caveat, Mallarm's diverting, discursive, and gorgeously disordered 1897 masterpiece tumbles forth--and proves itself to be just the sort of book his readers like most. The salmagundi of prose poems, prose-poetic musings, criticism, and reflections that is Divagations has long been considered a treasure trove by students of aesthetics and modern poetry. If Mallarm captured the tone and very feel of fin-de-sicle Paris, he went on to captivate the minds of the greatest writers of the twentieth century--from Valry and Eliot to Paul de Man and Jacques Derrida. This was the only book of prose he published in his lifetime and, in a new translation by Barbara Johnson, is now available for the first time in English as Mallarm arranged it. The result is an entrancing work through which a notoriously difficult-to-translate voice shines in all of its languor and musicality. Whether contemplating the poetry of Tennyson, the possibilities of language, a masturbating priest, or the transporting power of dance, Mallarm remains a fascinating companion--charming, opinionated, and pedantic by turns. As an expression of the Symbolist movement and as a contribution to literary studies, Divagations is vitally important. But it is also, in Johnson's masterful translation, endlessly mesmerizing.

Book Synopsis Peasants and Protest by : Laura Levine Frader
Download or read book Peasants and Protest written by Laura Levine Frader and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-04-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first decade of the twentieth century, the sleepy vineyard towns of the Aude department of southern France exploded with strikes and protests. Agricultural workers joined labor unions, the Socialist party established a base among peasant vinegrowers, and the largest peasant uprising of twentieth-century France, the great vinegrowers' revolt of 1907, shook the entire south with massive demonstrations. In this study, Laura Levine Frader explains how left-wing politics and labor radicalism in the Aude emerged from the economic and social transformation of rural society between 1850 and 1914. She describes the formation of an agricultural wage-earning class, and discusses how socialism and a revolutionary syndicalist labor movement together forged working-class identity. Frader's focus on the making of the rural proletariat takes the study of class formation out of the towns and cities and into the countryside. Frader emphasizes the complexity of social structure and political life in the Aude, describing the interaction of productive relations, the gender division of labor, community solidarities, and class alliances. Her analysis raises questions about the applicability of an urban, industrial model of class formation to rural society. This study will be of interest to French social historians, agricultural historians, and those interested in the relationship between capitalism, class formation, and labor militancy.

Book Synopsis French Liberalism in the 19th Century by : Robert Leroux
Download or read book French Liberalism in the 19th Century written by Robert Leroux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political and economic liberalism has generally been considered to be of marginal import in France, but at an intellectual level, it is a different story. An exploration of the history of French economic thought shows how a rich intellectual tradition developed during the nineteenth century, which has been previously neglected in English language studies of French thinking. In this important new collection, Robert Leroux brings together key works, both from widely regarded and lesser known authors, whose thinking constituted the core of a singular intellectual movement. These include such figures as Charles Dunoyer, Joseph Garnier, Gustave de Molinari, Yves Guyot, Alexis de Tocqueville, Benjamin Constant and Frédéric Bastiat. Including several works that have never before been published in English, this anthology begins with a full introduction that provides an overview of liberal thought in the nineteenth century, and each text is preceded by a biographical note on the author, and an explanation of the wider significance of the text. This anthology, by bringing to the fore a number of writers and doctrinal positions, seeks to give a coherence, an overall cast to French liberalism without exaggerating its unity. It will be of interest to economists, political scientists, historians, philosophers and sociologists alike.
Book Synopsis The Creation of States in International Law by : James R. Crawford
Download or read book The Creation of States in International Law written by James R. Crawford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statehood in the early 21st century remains as much a central problem as it was in 1979 when the first edition of The Creation of States in International Law was published. As Rhodesia, Namibia, the South African Homelands and Taiwan then were subjects of acute concern, today governments, international organizations, and other institutions are seized of such matters as the membership of Cyprus in the European Union, application of the Geneva Conventions to Afghanistan, a final settlement for Kosovo, and, still, relations between China and Taiwan. All of these, and many other disputed situations, are inseparable from the nature of statehood and its application in practice. The remarkable increase in the number of States in the 20th century did not abate in the twenty five years following publication of James Crawford's landmark study, which was awarded the American Society of International Law Prize for Creative Scholarship in 1981. The independence of many small territories comprising the 'residue' of the European colonial empires alone accounts for a major increase in States since 1979; while the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the USSR in the early 1990s further augmented the ranks. With these developments, the practice of States and international organizations has developed by substantial measure in respect of self-determination, secession, succession, recognition, de-colonization, and several other fields. Addressing such questions as the unification of Germany, the status of Israel and Palestine, and the continuing pressure from non-State groups to attain statehood, even, in cases like Chechnya or Tibet, against the presumptive rights of existing States, James Crawford discusses the relation between statehood and recognition; the criteria for statehood, especially in view of evolving standards of democracy and human rights; and the application of such criteria in international organizations and between states. Also discussed are the mechanisms by which states have been created, including devolution and secession, international disposition by major powers or international organizations and the institutions established for Mandated, Trust, and Non-Self-Governing Territories. Combining a general argument as to the normative significance of statehood with analysis of numerous specific cases, this fully revised and expanded second edition gives a comprehensive account of the developments which have led to the birth of so many new states.
