Les transformations de la mobilité les ont fait évoluer en même temps que la mondialisation prenait le contrôle de la gestion des temps et des espaces. Aujourd’hui, dans un même espace touristique, différents phénomènes ont lieu à différentes échelles spatiales au même moment. Notre société hypermoderne produit des lieux où les liens sociaux ne sont plus basés sur la concentration et la proximité géographiques. Les stations de montagne sont aussi concernées par cette "société hypertexte" et ce phénomène a transformé de nombreuses stations de montagne en métastations. On y constate une forte déconnexion entre le temps figé, marqué par une architecture, des matériaux, un parc immobilier datés, et le temps en mouvement, celui des attentes et des représentations liées à l’évolution des pratiques touristiques et de l’économie présentielle. Ces lieux de séjours ont particulièrement vieilli et certaines formes de leur mutation voire de leur délaissement apparaissent partout de manière marquée. Construit autour de travaux de recherches inédits, cet ouvrage pose un regard particulier, souvent critique, sur les mutations urbaines des stations de montagne. Il interroge leurs trajectoires et les confronte aux théories, aux faits, aux avis d’acteurs, aux études publiées dans les Pyrénées, pris comme "laboratoire des montagnes méridionales".

While many admired its beauty, culture, refinement, and famed joie de vivre, others thought of it as a dilapidated country populated by foul-smelling, mean-spirited anti-Americans driven by a keen desire to part tourists from their money. We'll Always Have Paris explores how both images came to flourish in the United States, often in the minds of the same people. Harvey Levenstein takes us back to the 1930s, when, despite the Great Depression, France continued to be the stomping ground of the social elite of the eastern seaboard. After World War II, wealthy and famous Americans returned to the country in droves, helping to revive its old image as a wellspring of sophisticated and sybaritic pleasures. At the same time, though, thanks in large part to Communist and Gaullist campaigns against U.S. power, a growing sensitivity to French anti-Americanism began to color tourists' experiences there, strengthening the negative images of the French that were already embedded in American culture. But as the century drew on, the traditional positive images were revived, as many Americans again developed an appreciation for France's cuisine, art, and urban and rustic charms. Levenstein, in his colorful, anecdotal style, digs into personal correspondence, journalism, and popular culture to shape a story of one nation's relationship to another, giving vivid play to Americans' changing response to such things as France's reputation for sexual freedom, haute cuisine, high fashion, and racial tolerance. Digital media and network technologies are now part of everyday life. The Internet has become the backbone of communication, commerce, and media; the ubiquitous mobile phone connects us with others as it removes us from any stable sense of location. Networked Publics examines the ways that the social and cultural shifts created by these technologies have transformed our relationships to (and definitions of) place, culture, politics, and infrastructure. Four chapters—each by an interdisciplinary team of scholars using collaborative software—provide a synoptic overview along with illustrative case studies. The chapter on place describes how digital networks enable us to be present in physical and networked places simultaneously—often at the expense of nondigital commitments. The chapter on culture explores the growth and impact of amateur-produced and remixed content online. The chapter on politics examines the new networked modes of bottom-up political expression and mobilization.
