Book excerpt: The idea of dedicating a Festschrift to honor Professor Frédéric Manns on the happy occasion of his 70th birthday came to mind in the autumn of 2011 and work on this project had been continuing ever since. Felicitously achieving this goal, the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology (Studium Biblicum Franciscanum) and the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land present this volume to Father Manns with gratitude for his profound scholarship and a lifetime service in the Holy Land. Perusing through Father Manns’ writings, it is easy to see a prominent and distinctive place devoted to the Gospel of John. It seemed therefore suitable to focus on this subject in the Festschrift honoring him: the title, Rediscovering John, relates to Manns’ significant contribution towards the better understanding of the Fourth Gospel. The volume comprises 21 studies authored by renowned scholars from various parts of the world, from different institutions and denominations. While the first half of the studies examines general issues (history of interpretation, textual transmission, intertextuality, theological themes, archaeology), the second half treats literary, narrative and exegetical approaches to particular texts of the Fourth Gospel. We augur that this rich collection will help to stimulate further discussion and reflection on the Gospel of John, as well as constitute an incentive to an already distinguished scholar to continue writing challenging and thought-provoking essays and books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Only True God" is the originator of all the languages of the nations of this planet Earth (Genesis 11:1-9). Does He knows the details of Grammar of those languages? How can we define in synthesis whatGrammar is? Does our wise and sovereign God presaw the need of talking to us in our own language? Does He also presaw that His dealing with the human race should be written in a book? Because these are facts that cannot be denied, it is evident He decreed that every word, phrase, sentence, concepts and complete paragraphs written in The Bible should be grammatically correct. The concept of the Three Persons of deity is evidenced with printine clarity, whenever this Book of God is grammatically interpreted. Inthe last night before His crucifixion, in His prayer to the Father, Jesus said: "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. An now, Oh Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was." "Me" and "I" explicitly defines two persons!

Book Synopsis Underground Protestantism in Sixteenth Century Spain by : Frances Luttikhuizen
Download or read book Underground Protestantism in Sixteenth Century Spain written by Frances Luttikhuizen and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frances Luttikhuizen chronicles the arrival, reception, and suppression of Protestant thought in sixteenth century Spain—referred to at that time as 'Lutheranism'. It opens with several chapters describing the socio-political-religious context that prevailed in Spain at the beginning of the sixteenth century and the growing trend to use the vernacular for parts of the Mass, as well as for catechizing the populace. Special attention is given to the forerunners, that is, the early alumbrado-deixados, the role of Cardinal Cisneros, and the impact of Erasmus and Juan de Valdes, etc. The use of archival material provides new details regarding the historical framework and the spread of evangelical thought in sixteenth century Spain. These dispatches and trial records greatly enrich the main body of the work, which deals with the arrival and confiscation of evangelical literature, the attitude of Charles V and Philip II towards religious dissidents, and the severe persecution of the underground evangelical circles at Seville and Valladolid. Special attention is given to the many women involved in the movement. The recurrent mention of the discovery and confiscation of prohibited literature shows how books played an important role in the development of the movements. The final chapters focus on the exiles and their contributions, the persecution of foreigners, and the years up to the abolition of the Inquisition. The work concludes with the efforts made in the nineteenth century to rediscover the history of the persecuted sixteenth century Spanish Protestants and their writings.
Book Synopsis Elders and the Plural Ministry : the Role of Exegetical History in Illuminating John Calvin’s Theology by : Elsie Anne Mckee
Download or read book Elders and the Plural Ministry : the Role of Exegetical History in Illuminating John Calvin’s Theology written by Elsie Anne Mckee and published by Librairie Droz. This book was released on 1988 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book La síntesis teológica de la noción de bien común en patrística written by Mathias Nebel and published by Herder Editorial. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Mythical Indies and Columbus's Apocalyptic Letter by : Elizabeth Moore Willingham
Download or read book Mythical Indies and Columbus's Apocalyptic Letter written by Elizabeth Moore Willingham and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his Letter of 1493 to the court of Spain, Christopher Columbus heralded his first voyage to the present-day Americas, creating visions that seduced the European imagination and birthing a fascination with those "new" lands and their inhabitants that continues today. Columbus's epistolary announcement travelled from country to country in a late-medieval media event -- and the rest, as has been observed, is history. The Letter has long been the object of speculation concerning its authorship and intention: British historian Cecil Jane questions whether Columbus could read and write prior to the first voyage while Demetrio Ramos argues that King Ferdinand and a minister composed the Letter and had it printed in the Spanish folio. The Letter has figured in studies of Spanish Imperialism and of Discovery and Colonial period history, but it also offers insights into Columbus's passions and motives as he reinvents himself and retails his vision of Peter Martyr's Novus orbis to men and women for whom Columbus was as unknown as the places he claimed to have visited. The central feature of the book is its annotated variorum edition of the Spanish Letter, together with an annotated English translation and word and name glossaries. A list of terms from early print-period and manuscript cultures supports those critical discussions. In the context of her text-based reading, the author addresses earlier critical perspectives on the Letter, explores foundational questions about its composition, publication and aims, and proposes a theory of authorship grounded in text, linguistics, discourse, and culture.
