Book Synopsis Contagion in Prussia, 1831 by : Richard S. Ross III
Download or read book Contagion in Prussia, 1831 written by Richard S. Ross III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1831, Prussia was consumed by two fears: the possibility of revolution resulting from the 1830 November Uprising of Poland against Russia, and a looming cholera epidemic. As the contagion made its way across Russia, Prussian medical officials took note and prepared to respond to what they thought was a highly contagious disease. When it spread to Poland, Prussia instituted a strict quarantine policy on its border, inhibiting Prussian support of the Russian war effort in Poland. From the Polish perspective the quarantine was seen as a deliberate act of sabotage against the revolution, an attempt to cut off trade with the West. This book examines the Prussian government's strict health policy and its consequences, including social unrest and resulting public health reforms. Polish public health policy is investigated in light of the revolutionary government's needs. Information is provided on the cholera camps established by Prussia to quarantine Polish soldiers who crossed the border as refugees in July 1831, the height of the cholera fear in Prussia.
Book Synopsis Napoleon III and Europe by : Sam Stuart
Download or read book Napoleon III and Europe written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon III and Europe investigates, outside the field of France's own political development, those positive changes in the organization of Europe and the world which Napoleon III effected. It examines Napoleon III's attitude towards the so-called nationality principle with regards to the Balkans, and the attention he gave to the fate of the Christian nations in European Turkey. Napoleon's role in the unification of Italy is also discussed. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book begins with an analysis of Napoleon's Balkan policy in relation to the Ottoman Empire, as well as his attitude towards the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The two areas of Europe in which the problem of nationality was most acute and complex are considered, namely, the empires of the Hapsburgs and the Turks. Attention then turns to Napoleon's policy towards Italy and its unification. The process of Italian unification is discussed in relation to European politics during Napoleon III's reign. Napoleon's foreign policy on Europe and the diplomatic actions of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck are also examined, along with his contributions to the development of European politics and culture. The final chapter is a selective bibliography of Europe between 1852 and 1890. This monograph will appeal to historians and political scientists.

Book Synopsis Franz Liszt, His Circle, and His Elusive Oratorio by : Xavier Jon Puslowski
Download or read book Franz Liszt, His Circle, and His Elusive Oratorio written by Xavier Jon Puslowski and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars, concert pianists, and classical music fans deem Franz Liszt the preeminent pianist of the nineteenth century. In Franz Liszt, His Circle, and His Elusive Oratorio, Xavier Puslowski engages in a detailed study of the links between Liszt, his contemporaries, and his milieu. Drawing on Liszt’s famous Saint Stanislas Oratorio as a focal point, Puslowski brings together the history of the Romantic period in classical music and the intersection of key figures and historical events in his story of Liszt’s achievements told from a distinctly historicist perspective. Readers get a new view of Liszt as Puslowski brings together a remarkable cast of characters. Friend and rival, Frederic Chopin, stands tall as a symbol of Poland’s fight for independence; the remarkable French “people’s poet” Pierre Beranger makes his entrance; virtuoso violinist Niccolo Paganini takes center stage later in Liszt’s life; the indefatigable French composer Hector Berlioz and the domineering Richard Wagner assume their roles in this musical drama; and finally two of Poland’s premier violinists, Karol Lipinski and Henryk Wieniawski, stand side by side with Russian pianist Anton Rubinstein, as the story of Liszt’s influence reaches across national boundaries and time itself to make its presence felt.
