How is the European Union structured? What are its features and how should it change to take that qualitative step and achieve the original idea of a land that is the cradle of different, but close nations, and turn itself into a united Europe which represents the States but also the citizens. In one word, a Federation? Today’s Europe is a great door with many locks; to discover the Europe of the future and look ahead of us, we need to find all the keys and open all these doors. This is why we wrote this book, which takes a picture of some of the main features of today’s Europe, each one of which is a lock that needs to be opened, and for which we try to suggest the right keys. The keys of our European federation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European macro-regions, Euroregions and other forms of inter-regional, cross-border cooperation have helped to shape new scenarios and new relational spaces which may generate opportunities for economic development, while redefining the political and economic meaning of national borders. This book is based on a number of key case studies which are crucial to understanding the complex web of political, economic and cultural factors that shape the heterogeneous picture of Europe’s new geography. This book provides a fresh view on this phenomenon, with a realistic approach shedding light on its complexity as well as on its ambiguities. The new macro-regions are interpreted with an approach recognizing the importance of institutionalization, but also their flexible configuration and "blurred" borders. The book also raises the issue of credibility and legitimacy, arguing that inter-regional cooperation has to be removed from the foggy realm of the exchanges between local political and bureaucratic elites in order to be clearly and concretely motivated, and functional to key strategic objectives of the regions. Finally, the authors suggest a complementarity between relations based on proximity and wider (possibly global) networks where some territories, and especially metropolises, find opportunities based on "virtual" proximity. Europe's Changing Geography provides a substantial re-appraisal of a key phenomenon in the process of European integration today. It will be of interest both to scholars of the political economy of European regionalism and to practitioners.

This study tells the story of the experts in public health, medicine, and social insurance sent to sell Franco's regime overseas.

Book excerpt: The book examines the economic crisis in the European Union and its consequences for European integration and the member states. Discussing the provisions introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon, from the effects of macroeconomic monitoring to the restraints produced by the Fiscal Compact, it offers an analysis of the European Union’s current situation and the effects of the measures adopted to manage the crisis, also making reference to how Europe is perceived by its citizens. Moreover, the chapters offer thoughts on the European integration process, in particular the effects that the policies adopted to tackle the crisis have had on the economic and financial sovereignty of the member states. This detailed examination of the situation of the EU between the Treaty of Lisbon and the Fiscal Compact is characterized by an original multidisciplinary approach that offers an articulate reflection on the criticalities that affect the actions of both European and national institutions.

This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Security Strategy launched in June 2016 by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security, Federica Mogherini, is key to addressing global pressures in a world undergoing continuous transformation and change and in which this 27-member state political system strives not only to adapt but also to play a more decisive role, now and in the future, on the global agenda. This book aims to introduce readers to the theory and practice of the EU’s External Action, which is based on the principles and values that guide it and that it aims to promote throughout the world: democracy, rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms, solidarity, respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter and International Law. And, specifically, it aims to introduce readers to the intricacies of EU policy and its role in the Mediterranean, bringing them closer to a comprehensive analysis of the links between the Union and its southern neighbours, with a special focus on the European Neighbourhood Policy and the impact of energy supply and the environment on security and defence. The reflections presented here aim, through the dissemination of the results of the main activities of the Jean Monnet Module “ThEUMed”, to draw the attention of EU policymakers on the southern border of the Union in order to strengthen common understanding between its Member States on the issues of the South and with the southern and eastern Mediterranean countries to address new challenges in the fields of cooperation and international security and defence in the region. Thus, they include the observations of the main members of the academic team of the project and two course graduates. We hope not to leave readers indifferent and that they enjoy reading this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to create a collective European identity? In this volume, leading scholars assess the link between collective identity construction in Europe and the multiple memory discourses that intervene in this construction process. The authors believe that the exposure of national collective memories to an enlarging communicative space within Europe affects the ways in which national memories are framed. Through this perspective, several case studies of East and West European memory discourses are presented. The first part of the volume elaborates how collective memory can be identified in the new Europe. The second part presents case studies on national memories and related collective identities in respect of European integration and its extension to the East. This timely work is the first to investigate collective identity construction on a pan-European scale and will be of interest to academics and postgraduate students of political sociology and European studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2006 book is a controversial reappraisal of the Italian occupation of the Mediterranean during the Second World War, which Davide Rodogno examines within the framework of fascist imperial ambitions. He focuses on the European territories annexed and occupied by Italy between 1940 and 1943: metropolitan France, Corsica, Slovenia, Croatia, Dalmatia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Western Macedonia, and mainland and insular Greece. He explores Italy's plans for Mediterranean expansion, its relationship with Germany, economic exploitation, the forced 'Italianisation' of the annexed territories, collaboration, repression, and Italian policies towards refugees and Jews. He also compares Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany through their dreams of imperial conquest, the role of racism and anti-Semitism, and the 'fascistization' of the Italian Army. Based on previously unpublished sources, this is a groundbreaking contribution to genocide, resistance, war crimes and occupation studies as well as to the history of the Second World War more generally.

Book excerpt: Since the death of General Franco in 1975, Spain has emerged from relative isolation to play an active role in international affairs. Membership of the European Union and Nato have been keys to Spain's new prominence, although the country has also tried to build on its traditional "special relationships" with Latin America and the Arab world. This is the first thorough study of democratic Spain's re-emergence on the international scene. By focusing on the relationship between external relations and domestic policy the book makes an important contribution to the literature on democratisation, as well as showing how Spanish foreign policy evolved between the mid-1970s and mid-1990s. While the book focuses on democratic Spain, its revisionist view of democratic transitions is of more general relevance. Democratization is seen as an integral process involving related, though not simultaneous changes in domestic policy and external relations. Only with the transformation of her external relations did Spain's new democracy finally become consolidated. This book will be required reading for students of Spanish politics and will also be useful to those interested in the process of democratization.
