Book excerpt: This book contains the memoirs of Stendahl or in his own words the 'chatter about his private life' between 1821 and 1830. It was between these dates that he moved to Paris and here looks back on his life as an eccentric bachelor. 'As well as Beyle the clairvoyant self-investigator, the sardonic analyst of Parisian salon society and deliberate cultivator of wit, here emerges Beyle the despairing lover, the shakespearean enthusiast, whose romantic sentiment run always parallel with his eighteenth-century logic'. Marie-Henri Beyle - better-known by his pen name, Stendhal - was born in Grenoble, France in 1783. He turned to writing after the final defeat of Napoleon in 1815, notable works include A Life of Rossini (1824), A Life of Napoleon (1929) and The Red and the Black published in 1830. A number of works were published posthumously, including Lamiel (1889), Memoirs of an Egotist (1892) and Lucien Leuwen (1894). Stendhal is now regarded as one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of literary realism.

Book Synopsis L'Amant de Marguerite Duras (Analyse approfondie) by : Morgane Lambinet
Download or read book L'Amant de Marguerite Duras (Analyse approfondie) written by Morgane Lambinet and published by Profil littéraire. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Love of Mirrors written by Gary Hyland and published by Coteau Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'The Love of Mirrors', Gary Hyland blends the most evocative work from his six prior collections with fourteen previously unpublished poems, to reveal an astonishing range of human experience. Calling upon a lifetime of subtle observation, Hyland uses a range of styles and techniques to take his reader on a journey from the playful innocence of childhood, through the bitter compromise of mid-life, to ultimately discover peace in the simple joys of daily life beneath a lengthening shadow of mortality. The resulting collection possesses a narrative voice strong enough to draw the reader inexorably along a path full of the unexpected twists that comprise a life. Hyland is not content to limit himself to the internal personal struggle, but also addresses the superficial glitter and lingering ambivalence of our post-9/11 society. Not shying away from the hollow pain of random violence and abuse, he creates a cast of vivid characters that challenge readers to slip beneath their skins and experience their haunting stories directly. In the end, the reader will possess the feeling of having traveled far and experienced much on a route that, even when it brushes the darkest acts, ultimately leads to a haven where even the unworthy can rise above their circumstances and the feel the transcendence of hope.

Book Synopsis In Praise of Risk by : Anne Dufourmantelle
Download or read book In Praise of Risk written by Anne Dufourmantelle and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A philosophical critique of how society encourages us to avoid risk when we should instead accept it. When Anne Dufourmantelle drowned in a heroic attempt to save two children caught in rough seas, obituaries around the world rarely failed to recall that she authored In Praise of Risk, implying that her death confirmed the ancient adage that to philosophize is to learn how to die. Now available in English, this magnificent book indeed offers a trenchant critique of the psychic work that the modern world devotes to avoiding risk. Yet this is not a book on how to die but on how to live. For Dufourmantelle, risk entails an encounter not with an external threat to life but with something hidden in life that conditions our approach to such ordinary risks as disobedience, passion, addiction, leaving family, and solitude. Keeping jargon to a minimum, Dufourmantelle weaves philosophical reflections together with clinical case histories. The everyday fears, traumas, and resistances that therapy addresses brush up against such broader concerns as terrorism, insurance, addiction, artistic creation, and political revolution. Taking up a project than joins the work of many French thinkers, such as Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy, Hélène Cixous, Giorgio Agamben, and Catherine Malabou, Dufourmantelle works to dislodge Western philosophy, psychoanalysis, ethics, and politics from the redemptive logic of sacrifice. She discovers the kernel of a future beyond annihilation where one might least expect to find it, hidden in the unconscious. In an era defined by enhanced security measures, border walls, trigger warnings, and endless litigation, Dufourmantelle’s masterwork provides a much-needed celebration of the risks that define what it means to live. Praise for In Praise of Risk “Dufourmantelle’s beautiful book places us on the side of life and love, showing us the power of psychoanalytic reflection on those moments when we are asked to find the courage to risk ourselves on behalf of the other.” —Jamieson Webster, author of Conversion Disorder “Magisterial. Dufourmantelle shows how life is universalized in risk and how recognizing this fact means enlisting in a fraternity among humans.” —Antonio Negri “This very rich book will have enormous appeal for readers interested in the intersection of philosophy, psychology, psychoanalysis, and humanistic inquiry. It productively challenges the assumptions of all these disciplines in novel ways and offers, in the final analysis, a redemptive path through that which matters to us most: living and dying well. Highly recommended.” —Choice
Book Synopsis The Septembers of Shiraz by : Dalia Sofer
Download or read book The Septembers of Shiraz written by Dalia Sofer and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Iranian revolution, rare-gem dealer Isaac Amin is arrested, wrongly accused of being a spy. Terrified by his disappearance, his family must reconcile a new world of cruelty and chaos with the collapse of everything they have known. As Isaac navigates the tedium and terrors of prison, forging tenuous trusts, his wife feverishly searches for him, suspecting, all the while, that their once-trusted housekeeper has turned on them and is now acting as an informer. And as his daughter, in a childlike attempt to stop the wave of baseless arrests, engages in illicit activities, his son, sent to New York before the rise of the Ayatollahs, struggles to find happiness even as he realizes that his family may soon be forced to embark on a journey of incalculable danger. A page-turning literary debut, The Septembers of Shiraz simmers with questions of identity, alienation, and love, not simply for a spouse or a child, but for all the intangible sights and smells of the place we call home.
Book Synopsis A Constant Journey by : Erika Ostrovsky
Download or read book A Constant Journey written by Erika Ostrovsky and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creation of a neuter pronoun in her earliest work, L’Opoponax, to the confusion of genres in her most recent fiction, Virgile, non, Monique Wittig uses literary subversion and invention to accomplish what Erika Ostrovsky appropriately defines as renversement, the annihilation of existing literary canons and the creation of highly innovative constructs. Erika Ostrovsky explores those aspects of Wittig’s work that best illustrate her literary approach. Among the countless revolutionary devices that Wittig uses to achieve renversement are the feminization of masculine gender names, the reorganization of myth patterns, and the replacement of traditional punctuation with her own system of grammatical emphasis and separation. It is the unexpected quantity and quality of such literary devices that make reading Monique Wittig’s fiction a fresh and rewarding experience. Such literary devices have earned Wittig the acclaim of her critics and peers—Marguerite Duras, Mary McCarthy, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Nathalie Sarraute, and Claude Simon, to name a few. While analyzing the intrinsic value of each of Wittig’s fictions separately, Erika Ostrovsky traces the progressive development of Wittig’s major literary devices as they appear and reappear in her fictions. Ostrovsky maintains that the seeds of those innovations that appear in Wittig’s most recent texts can be found as far back as L’Opoponax. This evidence of progression supports Ostrovsky’s theory that clues to Wittig’s future endeavors can be found in her past.
Book Synopsis Framing Silence by : Myriam J. A. Chancy
Download or read book Framing Silence written by Myriam J. A. Chancy and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first book-length study in English devoted exclusively to Haitian women's literature, Myriam Chancy finds that Haitian women have their own history, traditions, and stories to tell, tales that they are unwilling to suppress or subordinate to narratives of national autonomy. Issues of race, class, color, caste, nationality, and sexuality are all central to their fiction--as is an urgent sense of the historical place of women between the two U.S. occupations of the country. Their novels interrogate women's social and political stance in Haiti from an explicitly female point of view, forcefully responding to overt sexual and political violence within the nation's ambivalent political climate.
