Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Archaeology often struggles in envisioning real people behind the world of material objects it studies. Even when dealing with skeletal remains archaeologists routinely reduce them to long lists of figures and attributes. Such a fragmentation of past subjects and their bodies, if analytically necessary, is hardly satisfactory. While material culture is the main archaeological proxy to real people in the past, the absence of past bodies has been chronic in archaeological writings. At the same time, these past bodies in archaeology are omnipresent. Bodily matters are tangible in the archaeological record in a way most other theoretical centralities never appear to be. Ancient bodies surround us, in representations, in burials, in the remains of food preparation, cooking and consumption, in hands holding tools, in joint efforts of many individual bodies who built architecture and monuments. This collection of papers is a reaction to decades of the body's invisibility. It raises the body as the central topic in the study of past societies, researching its appearance in a wide variety of regional contexts and across vast spans of archaeological time. Contributions in this volume range from the deep Epi-Palaeolithic past of the Near East, through the European Neolithic and Bronze Age, Classical Greece and Late Medieval England, to pre-Columbian Central America, post-contact North America, and the most recent conflicts in the Balkans. In all these case studies, the materiality of the body is centre stage. Possibilities are highlighted for future study: by putting the body at the forefront of these archaeological studies an attempt is made to provoke the imagination and map out new territories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morning Star's Child is the painful spiritual journey of Kevin McCulloum from the Church's unspoken directive to her gay sons. The confusion of the soul that comes from the church's rejection forces the young man born under the influence of planet Venus, the planet of love and beauty to search for spiritual honesty and compassion on the teachings of Buddha and Jesus Christ. It presents the story of two young men that due to circumstances not under their control are unable to love one another and their attempt to cheat their ill-fated relationship. We are introduced to Kevin as his puritanical father rejects him when the father realizes that his beautiful son is gay. In a trip to Italy he finds out from a gypsy fortune teller that he is fated to a life of loneliness and that he is doomed to not finding his ideal mate or partner in life. He comes back to Chicago only to find that his father still rejects him. In the year when the planet Venus has completed its' 8 cycle run across the sky and has emerged from the underworld Kevin runs away to Puerto Vallarta where he meets a priest and recognizes him to be his other half from previous lives. Because our hero is not meant to find happiness in this life cycle he is sent away by his priest friend to find the life he is unable to give him. But before he leaves they travel to the Copper Canyon to make a sacrifice to the Goddess of Love where they swear to love one another in this life. In doing so they attract the attention of the gods trapped within the stars to their doomed relationship. In the canyon an Indian priestess tells Eduardo that Kevin will live an unfulfilled life and that when the 8 cycles of planet Venus going around the sun have been completed once again Kevin will come back to him dying, and together they will witness the passing of their souls. Kevin is made to forget all that has happened in Mexico but he is promised that on a night when witches rule the night and the time has come for his return he will remember all that has been hidden from him. We find our hero now living in San Francisco. He is an incredibly beautiful man who has not been able to form a lasting relationship with anyone including his father but who has been true to the spiritual honesty and compassions to others. He has written a fictional novel mirroring his experiences in Mexico. Eight cycles of Venus going around the sun have passed since he was made to forget meeting Eduardo and Kevin is now thirty years old. On this fated year Kevin finds out that he doesn't have long to live and is dying of AIDS. And on the night of Halloween when witches rule the night he descends to the Castro to join the feast. On this night all is revealed to him and he remembers as he was promised the truth. He leaves San Francisco and returns to Mexico in search of Eduardo for the meeting and passage of their souls.

Book excerpt: Archaeological remains are ‘fragmented by definition’: apart from exceptional cases, the study of the human past takes into account mainly traces, ruins, discards, and debris of past civilizations. It is rare that things have been preserved as they were originally made and conceived in the past. However, not all the ancient fragmentary objects were the ‘leftovers’ from the past. A noticeable portion of them was part and parcel of the ancient materiality already in the form of a fragment or damaged item. In 2000, John Chapman, with his volume Fragmentation in Archaeology, attracted the attention of scholars on the need to reconsider broken artifacts as the result of the deliberate anthropic process of physical fragmentation. The phenomenon of fragmentation can be thus explored with more outcomes for a category of objects that played an important role inside the society: the figurines. Due to their portability and size, figurines are particularly entangled and engaged in social, spatial, temporal, and material relations, and – more than other artifacts – can easily accommodate acts of embodiment and dismemberment. The act of creation symmetrically also involves the act of destruction, which in turn is another act of creation, since from the fragmentation comes a new entity with a different ontology. Breaking contains the paradigms of life: creation and reparation, destruction and regeneration. The scope of this volume is to search for traces of any voluntary and intentional fragmentation of ancient artifacts, creating, improving, and sharpening the methods and principles for a scientific investigation that goes beyond single author impression or sensitivity. The comparative lens adopted in this volume can allow the reader to explore different fields taken from ancient societies of how we can address, assess, detect, and even discuss the action of breaking and mutilation of ancient figurines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Growing up in Mexico, Peggy Brown Balderrama tells the story of her family's life in Mexico. She describes trips through various cities and towns in the country with interesting details, and as a bonus, she gives humorous descriptions of several trips through Europe and South America that she took with her family. The author arrived in Mexico with her parents from England when she was seven years old, and relates, with wit, the impressions she formed of Mexico and its people when she was that age. Growing up in a very peaceful Mexico City in the forties, contrasts with the Mexico City of today. Her life in the American High School, her various boyfriends, and her eventual marriage to a Mexican physician, tell a different tale from a girl who might have grown up in England or the United States or even in the Mexico City of today.
