Download or read book Pierre Dorion written by Mark Lanctôt and published by Muse D'Art Contemporain de Montral. This book was released on 2012 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Dorion is a painter who has always been interested in the history of painting. For nearly thirty years, he has has scrutinized the tools, techniques, materials, theories, genres and iconography of painting with the goal of discovering the universal experience hidden within the rich material history. Dorion drew attention early in his career for his pictorial installations that critically recast the styles and subject matter of classical painting. Since then his work has consistently explored the connections between painting, architecture, photography and art history. He then devoted himself to a series of life-size self-portraits, before moving towards a figurative minimalism where the reading of the work is complicated by the level of abstraction. This monograph features over 70 major works produced since the mid-1990s, including a series of recent paintings never before exhibited. Profusely illustrated and composed of three original essays, the publication establishes Dorion life¿s work as a singular approach to art and a vibrant homage to painting.

Book Synopsis Dead or Alive! by : Maria Fabricius Hansen
Download or read book Dead or Alive! written by Maria Fabricius Hansen and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image is an ontological paradox; it is made of dead matter, yet appears to be alive. For millennia, artists have created images of the living world - images that are static and yet possess the power to bring to life a frozen moment in time. While this tension has constituted a fundamental challenge for as long as theories on the nature of images have existed, recent scholarship has rekindled interest in the question of what images 'do to us'. Despite the rational discourse of Modernity, we must acknowledge that we view images as half-living entities. This book addresses the perpetual relevance of images' enigmatic life-likeness through studies that engage with a variety of visual material by asking the same question: what qualifies animation? Covering a wide range of image practices, such as early paleolithic stone engravings, medieval tomb sculpture, renaissance death masks and baroque painting to modern fashion, park design, early cinema and BioArt, the twelve chapters, written by scholars of art history and visual culture, demonstrate that the ontological paradox of the image is not limited to a specific historical period or certain types of images, but can be seen throughout the history of images across different cultures.

Book Synopsis A Vision of Cats and Dogs: Bonnard and Animality by : Véronique Serrano
Download or read book A Vision of Cats and Dogs: Bonnard and Animality written by Véronique Serrano and published by Silvana Editoriale. This book was released on 2016 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals were a primary source of inspiration and creative stimulation for the Nabi painter Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947): the theme can be found in about a third of the 2,300 paintings created by the artist over the course of his lengthy career. Ubu, Ravageau, Black and Almond were the names of a few of the canine companions that appear in his work; his cats, though never thus identified by name, also frequently populate his canvases. The appearance of other animals, such as horses, fish, chickens and cows, further testify to Bonnard's fundamental affection for the creature world; but their presence in his paintings has never before been directly addressed. This fully illustrated book examines this secret theme running throughout Bonnard's oeuvre, and will prove a delightful revelation for fans of the intimiste master.

Download or read book The Imaginary: Word and Image written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imaginary as a critical concept originated in the twentieth century and has been theorized in diverse ways. It can be understood as a register of thought; the way we interpret the world; the universe of images, signs, texts, and objects of thought. In this volume, it is explored as it manifests itself in encounters between the verbal and the visual. A number of the essays brought together here explore the transposition of the imaginary in illustrations of texts and verbal renditions of images, as well as in comic books based on paintings or on verbal narratives. Others analyze ways in which books deal with film or television and investigate the imaginary in digital media. Special attention is paid to the imaginary of places and the relationship of the imaginary with memory. Written in English and French, these contributions by European and American scholars demonstrate the various concerns and approaches characteristic of contemporary scholarship in word and image studies.

Book Synopsis Du musée conservateur au musée virtuel by : BAUJARD Corinne
Download or read book Du musée conservateur au musée virtuel written by BAUJARD Corinne and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
