Book excerpt: Le contexte de la globalisation des marchés et la croissance exponentielle des technologies accentuent le besoin de chaque société de former des individus compétents qui pourront participer, le plus rapidement possible, à l'accroissement de sa richesse. Pour ce faire, la diplomation des étudiants inscrits dans un établissement d'enseignement collégial ou universitaire devient un enjeu majeur. Afin de mieux comprendre le phénomène de l'abandon et de la persévérance aux études postsecondaires, plusieurs approches théoriques ont vu le jour dans les quarante dernières années. Celles de type interactionnel et institutionnel sont ici développées. Certains auteurs (Sandler, 1998; Tinto, 1993) ont créé des modèles théoriques en lien avec ces deux approches afin de mieux comprendre les facteurs qui amènent les étudiants à changer d'établissement d'enseignement. En plus de ces modèles, plusieurs facteurs pouvant être regroupés en catégories distinctes permettent d'approfondir l'analyse de ce phénomène. Les évènements de vie précédant la décision d'effectuer ce changement sont des éléments qui peuvent être tout autant significatifs. Une méthode qualitative a été choisie et elle se fonde sur la passation d'entrevues semi-dirigées. L'échantillon pour cette étude se compose de 28 participants. Parmi ceux-ci, 19 ont changé d'université alors que 9 autres ont fait le choix de retourner étudier au collégial. L'analyse de contenu vise à cerner les facteurs institutionnels et ceux qui prennent racine dans les différents contextes de vie et qui mènent les étudiants à changer d'établissement d'enseignement. Elle permet de rassembler les facteurs en trois catégories : institutionnels (n=8), reliés à l'entourage (n=7) et professionnels (n=13). Les étudiants du premier profil ont vécu de l'insatisfaction en lien avec des facteurs institutionnels. En ce sens, ceux-ci mentionnent le manque d'accessibilité des enseignants, ainsi que leur manque de compétence. Les étudiants du deuxième profil ont vécu des expériences majoritairement positives et ils ont apprécié leur établissement d'enseignement. Toutefois, ils ont décidé de déménager afin de suivre un proche ou de rejoindre leurs proches dans une autre région. Pour les participants du troisième profil, les difficultés rencontrées lors des premiers trimestres les ont amenés à réfléchir sur l'intérêt ainsi que sur leur perception de leurs aptitudes liées à leur future profession. Ce faisant, ils se sont inscrits dans un nouveau programme qui était offert dans un autre établissement d'enseignement. Il a été permis de constater qu'une plus grande proportion d'étudiants qui ont effectué un retour au collégial l'ont fait par manque d'intérêt envers leur profession. En effet, plus de la moitié des participants qui ont continué à étudier dans une institution universitaire se sont inscrits dans un domaine similaire, voire même identique lors de leur inscription dans une nouvelle université comparativement à un peu moins du quart des participants qui ont effectué un retour au collégial. L'ensemble des participants a fourni des pistes de solution afin que leur établissement d'enseignement évite leur départ vers un autre établissement. Ils ont, entre autres choses, nommé la révision de la description des programmes et la tenue d'un stage lors des premiers trimestres.

Book excerpt: Death metal is one of popular music's most extreme variants, and is typically viewed as almost monolithically nihilistic, misogynistic, and reactionary. Studies tend to view the music as a reflection of these listeners' social conditions and are concerned with metal's pleasures so long as these can be seen within that context: as responses to cultural and economic circumstances. Michelle Phillipov's Death Metal and Music Criticism: Analysis at the Limits, in contract, offers an account of listening pleasure on its own terms. Through an analysis of death metal's sonic and lyrical extremity, Phillipov shows how violence and aggression can be configured as sites for pleasure and play in death metal music, with little relation to the 'real' lives of listeners. In some cases, gruesome lyrical themes and fractured song forms invite listeners to imagine new experiences of the body and of the self. In others, the speed and complexity of the music foster a 'technical' or distanced appreciation akin to the viewing experiences of graphic horror film fans. These aspects of death metal listening are often neglected by scholarly accounts concerned with evaluating music as either 'progressive' or 'reactionary.' By contextualizing the discussion of death metal via substantial overviews of popular music studies as a field, Phillipov's Death Metal and Music Criticism highlights how the premium placed on political engagement in popular music studies not only circumscribes our understanding of the complexity and specificity of death metal, but of other musical styles as well. Exploring death metal at the limits of conventional music criticism helps not only to develop a more nuanced account of death metal listening—it also offers some important starting points for a rethinking of popular music scholarship as a whole.
