Book Synopsis Secrets of Pinar's Game (2 vols) by : Roger Boase
Download or read book Secrets of Pinar's Game (2 vols) written by Roger Boase and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 950 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Secrets of Pinar’s Game, Roger Boase is the first to decipher a card game completed in 1496 for Queen Isabel, Prince Juan, her daughters and her 40 court ladies. This game offers readers access to the cultural memory of a group of educated women, revealing their knowledge of proverbs, poetry and sentimental romance, their understanding of the symbolism of birds and trees, and many facts ignored in official sources. Boase translates all verse into English, reassesses the jousting invenciones in the Cancionero general (1511), reinterprets the poetry of Pinar’s sister Florencia, and identifies Acevedo, author of some poems about festivities in Murcia c. 1507. He demonstrates that many of Pinar’s ladies reappear as prostitutes in the anonymous Carajicomedia two decades later.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long overlooked in standard reference works, pioneering women medievalists finally receive their due in Women Medievalists and the Academy. This comprehensive edited volume brings to life a diverse collection of inspiring figures through memoirs, biographical essays, and interviews. Covering many different nationalities and academic disciplines—including literature, philology, history, archaeology, art history, theology or religious studies, and philosophy—each essay delves into one woman’s life, intellectual contributions, and efforts to succeed in a male-dominated field. Together, these extraordinary personal histories constitute a new standard reference that speaks to a growing interest in women’s roles in the development of scholarship and the academy. The collection begins in the eighteenth century with Elizabeth Elstob and continues to the present, and includes—among more than seventy profiles—such important figures as Anna Jameson, Lina Eckenstein, Georgiana Goddard King, Eileen Power, Dorothy L. Sayers, Dorothy Whitelock, Susan Mosher Stuard, Marcia Colish, and Caroline Walker Bynum, among others.

Book Synopsis The Garden as Woman's Space in Twelfth- and Thirteenth Century Literature by : Elizabeth A. Augspach
Download or read book The Garden as Woman's Space in Twelfth- and Thirteenth Century Literature written by Elizabeth A. Augspach and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine a few literary gardens of romance from the close of the 12th to the first half of the 13th century in light of the development of the figure of the enclosed garden as a female space that is not owned by a man, but rather by the woman who inhabits it. In this scenario the woman is consistently seen as other, while the narrative directs the reader's attention to the point of view of the man who is confronted with this inverted state of affairs. This unnatural situation sets up a power play between the genders that will be resolved only once the woman and her garden are brought to heel. The exception to this rule is the Virgin Mary, whose wonderful garden possesses no unnaturalness or witchcraft, for its exceptional qualities are a manifestation of the Virgin's perfection.

In the dramatic conclusion to the Marta’s Legacy series, the beloved author of Redeeming Love and The Masterpiece delivers a rich and deeply moving story about the silent sorrows that can tear a family apart and the grace and forgiveness that can heal even the deepest wounds. Marta’s granddaughter, Carolyn, comes of age during the turbulent sixties, struggling to navigate a tense family life. Though college offers a taste of freedom, tragedy shatters her confidence and she disappears into the heady counterculture of San Francisco. When she reemerges, more lost than ever, she reluctantly turns to her family to help her rebuild a life for herself and her own daughter, May Flower Dawn. But familiar tensions emerge when Dawn develops a closer bond with her grandmother than her own mother. Download or read book The Singer and the Scribe written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Singer and the Scribe brings together studies of the European ballad from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century by major authorities in the field and is of interest to students of European literature, popular traditions and folksong. It offers an original view of the development of the ballad by focusing on the interplay and interdependence of written and oral transmission, including studies of modern singers and their repertoires and of the role of the audience in generating a literary product which continues to live in performance. While using specific case studies the contributors systematically extend their reflections on the ballad as song and as poetry to draw broader conclusions. Covering the Hispanic world, including the Sephardic tradition, Scandinavia, The Netherlands, Greece, Russia, England and Scotland the essays also demonstrate the interconnections of a European tradition beyond national boundaries.
