Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents critical studies of modern reconfigurations of conceptions of the past, of the 'classical', and of national heritage. Its scope is global (China, India, Egypt, Iran, Judaism, the Greco-Roman world) and inter-disciplinary (textual philology, history of art and architecture, philosophy, gardening). Its emphasis is on the complexity of the modernization process and of reactions to it: ideas and technologies travelled from India to Iran and from Japan to China, while reactions show tensions between museumization and the recreation of 'presence'. It challenges readers to rethink the assumptions of the disciplines in which they were trained

Book excerpt: In Lorca’s Legacy, Jonathan Mayhew explores multiple aspects of the creative and critical afterlife of Federico García Lorca, the most internationally recognized Spanish poet and playwright of the twentieth century. Lorca is an iconic and charismatic figure who has evoked the admiration and fascination of musicians, poets, painters, and playwrights across the world since his tragic assassination by right-wing forces in 1936, at the onset of the Spanish Civil War. This volume ranges widely, discussing his influence on American theater, his much-debated lecture on the duende, his delayed encounter with queer theory, his influence on contemporary Spanish poetry, and other relevant topics. The critical literature on Lorca is vast, and original contributions are comparatively rare, but Mayhew has found a way to shed fresh light on his legacy by looking with a critical eye at the creative transformations of his life and work, both in Spain and abroad. Lorca’s Legacy celebrates the wealth of material inspired by Lorca, bringing to bear a sophisticated, theoretically informed critical perspective. This book will be of enormous interest to anyone interested in the international projection of Spanish literature, or anyone who has felt the fascination of Lorca’s duende.

Book excerpt: This book contains some of the finest examples of Mandinka oral tradtions ever published, both in English and the original Mandinka, along with a chapter of Mandinka Arabic script texts translated into English. As a complement to the author's ethnography of the Mandinka published in 1980/1987, this book presents legends about jihad leaders, witchcraft, local Islam, cosmology, the founding of villages, great leaders among women, notable social institutions and other significant people and places. The Pakao country of southern Senegal developed into a West African center of pilgrimage. This book reveals the linguistic richness of Mandinka as an African literature in its own right and contributes to broader Mande studies. Since Mandinka figured prominently in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, this book also lays a basis for future work by the author on a cultural legacy of Mandinka in the New World.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diversity in African Languages contains a selection of revised papers from the 46th Annual Conference on African Linguistics, held at the University of Oregon. Most chapters focus on single languages, addressing diverse aspects of their phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, information structure, or historical development. These chapters represent nine different genera: Mande, Gur, Kwa, Edoid, Bantu, Nilotic, Gumuzic, Cushitic, and Omotic. Other chapters investigate a mix of languages and families, moving from typological issues to sociolinguistic and inter-ethnic factors that affect language and accent switching. Some chapters are primarily descriptive, while others push forward the theoretical understanding of tone, semantic problems, discourse related structures, and other linguistic systems. The papers on Bantu languages reflect something of the internal richness and continued fascination of the family for linguists, as well as maturation of research on the family. The distribution of other papers highlights the need for intensified research into all the language families of Africa, including basic documentation, in order to comprehend linguistic diversities and convergences across the continent. In this regard, the chapter on Daats’íin (Gumuzic) stands out as the first-ever published article on this hitherto unknown and endangered language found in the Ethiopian-Sudanese border lands.
