Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear All, All governments in the International Community have a moral and legal obligation to protect and safeguard the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This includes the reproductive rights of women and their right of shaping their gender role in society and family relations. A very important ethical aspect concerning the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is that children are not asked whether they want to be born or not; they simply come into this world without being asked. Hence politicians and parents in Africa have to take extra special care that the necessary resources are available concerning children; to uphold the UNCRC. With the global population still increasing by an estimated 80 million people per year, the International Community needs to make a greater effort to implement effective family planning in the world. Especially in developing countries it is often not the woman's choice if she has children. Traditional survival patterns often dictate women to give birth to as many children as they possibly can. The global population has grown from 1 billion in 1800 to 7.8 billion in 2020. It is expected to keep growing, and estimates have put the total population at 8.6 billion by mid-2030, 9.8 billion by mid-2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100. Many nations with rapid population growth have low standards of living, whereas many nations with low rates of population growth have high standards of living. Hence it is imperative to counteract overpopulation, poverty, inequality and forced migration in the world; by implementing effective family planning. Also, a mind-set change is required concerning the ethics of political economy, population and social cohesion - especially by politicians and economists. In particular, how a reduction of population in society can be transformed into an asset - such as greater harmony and happiness in society - due to less competition for space, resources and jobs; and thereby avoiding the rat race. Furthermore, to improve family planning, a Basic Income Guarantee (BIG) must be implemented in the world, so that people can educate themselves about contraceptive methods and obtain them. As in a world where there are no guarantees and as citizens who must be under government rule, we should at least be assured that we will be able to feed, clothe and handle the simplest needs of human beings.

Storia d’amore ispirata a Cyrano de Bergerac.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nationalization of the postal service in Italy transformed post-unification letter writing as a cultural medium. Both a harbinger of progress and an expanded, more efficient means of circulating information, the national postal service served as a bridge between the private world of personal communication and the public arena of information exchange and production of public opinion. As a growing number of people read and wrote letters, they became part of a larger community that regarded the letter not only as an important channel in the process of information exchange, but also as a necessary instrument in the education and modernization of the nation. In Postal Culture, Gabriella Romani examines the role of the letter in Italian literature, cultural production, communication, and politics. She argues that the reading and writing of letters, along with epistolary fiction, epistolary manuals, and correspondence published in newspapers, fostered a sense of community and national identity and thus became a force for social change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: A Polyglot Pocket Dictionary of Lingala, English, French and Italian represents a glossary that allows the reader to appreciate positive diversity and interculturalism through multilingualism. Building on, and referring to, the author’s experiences of studying and living abroad as a series of transits, transitions, and translations, it urges the reader to enhance their global competency and brain power, and to seek cosmocitizenship through the study of world languages and cultures. To this end, it shares enlightening reflections on the benefits of multilingualism, and allows the reader to develop basic language skills in Lingala, English, French, and Italian. As such, in addition to the glossary, this work also contains key facts about the languages at hand, as well as useful phrases, weekdays, numbers, and elements of grammar.

Tutto in chiave ironica e dissacrante.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transnational Italian Studies is specifically targeted at a student audience and is designed to be used as a key text when approaching the disciplinary field of Italian studies. It allows the study of Italian culture to be construed and practised not simply as the inquiry into a national tradition but as the study of the interaction of cultural practices both within Italy itself and in those parts of the world that have witnessed the extent of Italian mobility. The text argues that Italian culture needs to be considered in a transnational/transcultural perspective and that an understanding of linguistic and cultural translation underlies all approaches to the study of Italian culture in a global context. Contributions deploy a range of methodological approaches to understand and illustrate how language operates, how culture inhabits and constitutes public and private space, how notions of time operate within people’s lives, and the multiple ways in which people experience a sense of personhood. Chapters stretch from the medieval period to the present and demonstrate how transnational Italian culture can be critically addressed through the examination of carefully chosen examples. Contributors: Alessandra Diazzi, Andrea Rizzi, Barbara Spadaro, Charles Burdett, Clorinda Donato, David Bowe, Derek Duncan, Donna Gabaccia, Eugenia Paulicelli, Fabio Camilletti, Giuliana Muscio, Jennifer Burns, Loredana Polezzi, Marco Santello, Monica Jansen, Naomi Wells, Nathalie Hester, Serena Bassi, Stefania Tufi, Teresa Fiore and Tristan Kay.
