Book Synopsis The Bobbio missal by : Catholic Church
Download or read book The Bobbio missal written by Catholic Church and published by . This book was released on 1924 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bobbio Missal is one of the most important and interesting liturgical books surviving from the early middle ages. It is the best known example of the Gallican' type of missal, attesting therefore to the distinctive liturgical practices which were widespread in Merovingian and Frankish churches during the seventh and eighth centuries, before these began to tbe replaced by the Roman practices including use of Gregorian' missals in various forms during the period of Charlemagne's reforms. In the opinion of modern palaeographers, the Bobbio Missal was written somewhere in northern Italy in the mid-eighth century. Although it was long regarded as a witness to Irish liturgical practice, it is now considered as essentially Gallican, but incorporating various prayers of Gelasian origin. Palaeographically the manuscript (now Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale, lat. 13246) is of great interest, being written in an idiosyncratic mixture of uncial and minuscule, by an Italian scribe neither literate nor well-trained. Book Synopsis Actualité de la pensée médiévale. Recueil d’articles. by : Joseph Verheyden
Download or read book Actualité de la pensée médiévale. Recueil d’articles. written by Joseph Verheyden and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the 47th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (Leuven, 1998). The general theme of the meeting was the unity of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Main papers on this topic were read by R.L. Brawley, J. Delobel, A. Denaux, J.A. Fitzmeyer, F.W. Horn, J. Kremer, A. Lindemann, O. Mainville, D. Marguerat, F. Neirynck, W. Radl, M. Rese, J. Taylor, C.M. Tuckett, and J. Verheyden. While a large majority of scholars agree that Luke intended his work to cover both the past and the continuing history of Jesus (Gospel and Acts), the essays also illustrate the complexities of this view on the unity of Luke-Acts when it comes to interpret the various aspects of Lukan theology, christology, pneumatology, and ecclesiology, the expansion of the Church in light of its Jewish origins, the genre of Luke-Acts, and the literary and stylistic means Luke used to make his work a unity. In total the volume includes some 40 papers, of which 24 are offered papers: L. Alexander, H. Baarlink, M. Bachmann, D. Bechard, T.L. Brodie, G.P. Carras, A. del Agua, C. Focant, G. Geiger, B.J. Koet, V. Koperski, D.P. Moessner, G. Oegema, J. Pichler, E. Plumacher, A. Puig i Tarrech, U. Schmid, B. Schwank, N. Taylor, P.J. Tomson, S. Van den Eynde, S. Walton, G. Wasserberg, F. Wilk. This collection is an invaluable contribution to current discussions in Lukan study and to a nuanced understanding of the relationship between Luke's two volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in a set of four collections of articles by Michel Huglo to be published in the Variorum series. It brings together the studies of Gregorian chant and of later monophonic and polyphonic additions to the earlier repertory that occupied Huglo in the second phase of his research. Represented here are articles on the Kyrie, the introit tropes of St-Gall, an elegy for William the Conqueror (d. 1087), the versus by Venantius Fortunatus for the cathedral of Paris, the liturgical dramas of Fleury, early organum, the Mass of Tournai, and, finally, the Requiem by Eustache Du Caurroy.

Download or read book Les sources du plain-chant et de la musique médiévale written by Michel Huglo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin and development of Western plainchant, and of the genres of liturgical book in which it is recorded, have occupied Michel Huglo throughout his long career, which has taken him to libraries in every corner of Europe and the United States. This volume, the first in a set of four to appear in the Variorum series, brings together analyses of manuscripts dating from the 9th to the 13th century, including Huglo's pathbreaking studies of the antiphoner of Compiègne, the first troper-prosers, and of alleluia lists as clues to place of origin. The consequences of the Treaty of Verdun (843) for the diffusion of the plainchant repertory, research in medieval musicology in the 20th century, the utility of codicology for musicological manuscript studies, and the critical edition of the Gregorian antiphoner are addressed in other studies included here.

Book Synopsis Society, Culture and Politics in Byzantium by : Nicolas Oikonomides
Download or read book Society, Culture and Politics in Byzantium written by Nicolas Oikonomides and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society, Culture and Politics in Byzantium is the fourth selection of papers by the late Nicolas Oikonomides to be published in the Variorum Collected Studies Series. Its focus is upon the Byzantine world after the Fourth Crusade and during the Palaeologan period, though several studies deal with a longer time span. The twenty-eight articles included look first at questions of language and literacy, and then at the relationships between art and politics. The final sections examine aspects of the history of the later empire, in the age of its decline, caught between the economic penetration of the Western European states and the expansion of the Ottoman Turks, and consider the development of Byzantine institutions, monasteries and the Church in this period.
