Book Synopsis Françoise Mallet-Joris by : Susan Petit
Download or read book Françoise Mallet-Joris written by Susan Petit and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2001 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1950's, with Le Rempart des béguines, La Chambre rouge, Cordélia, Les Mensonges and L'Empire céleste, down into the 1990's, with Adriana Sposa, Divine, Les Larmes, La Maison dont le chien est fou and Sept démons dans la ville, the work of Françoise Mallet-Joris has exercised a very special fascination over a very large readership. The content of her work, ever developing yet faithful to residual, either lived or observed, studied experience, is wide-ranging and unflinching - family relationships, the individual psyche, belief systems that move from quasi-nihilism to the mystical, sexuality, feminine consciousness, creativity, larger social frameworks, etc. - and she can move with ease from portrayal of the hypercontemporary to the researched - and finely imagined - historical reconstruction. Susan Petit, whose lively and elegantly written study addresses all these, and other, factors, argues modestly but wisely that "the works of Mallet-Joris provide stimulating, thought-provoking and coherent ways of apprehending ourselves and our human situation". One need ask no more of an author who, though perhaps personally drawn to certain perspectives, maintains an admirable openness and multiplicity of interrogation of existence.

Book Synopsis L'autorité religieuse et ses limites en terres d'islam by :
Download or read book L'autorité religieuse et ses limites en terres d'islam written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Ont contribué/contributors include: Elisabetta Borromeo, Xavier Bougarel, Rachida Chih, Nathalie Clayer, Jérôme Cler, Benoît Fliche, Anna Neubauer, Alexandre Papas, Nicolas Vatin, Gilles Veinstein. Reconsidering the question of religious authority, L'autorité religieuse et ses limites en terres d'islam offers various case studies located in Central Asia, throughout the Ottoman Empire, in the Balkans and in Turkey. The present volume discusses the complex relationships between political power and religious authorities, such as Sufi shaykhs, ulamas, sheikh ul-islâm, hegumens, and the latin clergy in the premodern period. The 20th and 21th centuries are analysed from the perspective of the transformation of religious authority - certainly fragmented but vigorous - among the Bosnian Muslim Reformists, the Albanian Bektashis, the Alevis of Anatolia, and in female Sufism in Istanbul. It appears that religious authority is not limited to traditional authorities and is continuously confronted with limits, whether theological, political, social or institutional.

Book Synopsis The Collected Letters of Joseph Conrad by : Joseph Conrad
Download or read book The Collected Letters of Joseph Conrad written by Joseph Conrad and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the second of the projected eight-volume edition comprising all the surviving letters of Joseph Conrad. Once completed the edition will have assembled over 3,500 letters, one third of them as yet unpublished and many others only published before in inaccurate versions. The period covered by this volume, 1898-1902, was one of considerable achievement and anxiety for Conrad. The birth of his first child, the death of Stephen Crane, the murder of a friend's son, an encounter with an early X-ray machine, imperial wars in Cuba and South Africa - these events forced Conrad to face the problems of identity in terms of family, nation, history, and the cosmic order. This is also the period of 'Youth', 'Amy Foster', 'Typhoon', Lord Jim, and 'Heart of Darkness'. Often funny, always thoughtful, full of verbal energy even in the toils of severe depression, the letters in Volume Two present Conrad at a crucial though vulnerable moment of his life and literary career."--Publisher's description of v. 2
