Book excerpt: En este artículo se analiza la inserción laboral de los migrantes calificados mexicanos en Estados Unidos. El trabajo se centra en el análisis del volumen y el perfil sociodemográfico de estos inmigrantes y en su inserción laboral en ese país. Los hallazgos sugieren que los mexicanos calificados residentes en Estados Unidos, desde una perspectiva comparativa, revelan un menor dominio del idioma inglés, un bajo porcentaje tiene estudios de posgrado y hay una discordancia entre sus estudios universitarios y las áreas de especialidad con gran demanda laboral. Por otra parte, se advierte el uso limitado de visas de inmigrante y no inmigrante. El resultado es que la mayor parte de estos inmigrantes mexicanos calificados presentan una inserción laboral deficiente porque tienen ocupaciones para las que no es necesario contar con estudios universitarios.

Estos factores se conjugan para propiciar malas condiciones de trabajo. Particularmente, la subcontratacion a traves de agencias de trabajo temporal viene a acentuar la precariedad laboral, pues los inmigrantes que acuden a este mecanismo enfrentan empleos inconstantes y nulas posibilidades para mejorar. Frente a este panorama adverso algunas voces han propuesto, a traves de la organizacion, mejorar las condiciones de trabajo. Como resultado de esta organizacion se logro construir una ley en favor de los trabajadores subcontratados. El trabajo de investigacion sobre los mexicanos inmigrantes en Aurora, Illinois, analiza este escenario."

She argues that while Mexican workers do not necessarily constitute cheap labour for Canadian growers, they are vital for the survival of some agricultural sectors because they are always available for work, even on holidays and weekends, or when exhausted, sick, or injured. Basok exposes the mechanisms that make Mexican seasonal workers unfree and shows that the workers' virtual inability to refuse the employer's demand for their labour is related not only to economic need but to the rigid control exercised by the Mexican Ministry of Labour and Social Planning and Canadian growers over workers' participation in the Canadian guest worker program, as well as the paternalistic relationship between the Mexican harvesters and their Canadian employers.
