Book Synopsis Methodist Education in Peru by : Rosa del Carmen Bruno-Jofré
Download or read book Methodist Education in Peru written by Rosa del Carmen Bruno-Jofré and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With research based on extensive primary sources, the author examines the activities of the Methodist mission in Peru, in particular its educational work, within the Peruvian socioeconomic formation and its ideological and intellectual changes. Yet her study goes beyond Methodist boundaries: Social Gospel doctrine and educational theory, which link American Progressivism (especially John Dewey’s pedagogical ideas) with Christianity, are also treated at an interdenominational level. The book contends that Methodist schools constituted an educational system of their own within a socioeconomic formation of uneven character, a society where an imperialist presence was interwoven with pre-capitalist as well as local incipient capitalist forms. The author’s analysis of the political dimension of missionary work—from the quest for religious freedom to the attempt to exert influence on social movements—leads her to consider the relationships among APRA leaders, the missionaries, and the interdenominational Committee on Cooperation in Latin America. Bruno-Jofré argues that Social Gospel doctrines, although couched in reformist language, were ultimately a vehicle of North American theology. This book presents a refreshingly wide perspective on the development of education in the Third World as affected by missionary bodies from the First World.
Book Synopsis Doctrina Metodista by : Dr. Ted A. Campbell
Download or read book Doctrina Metodista written by Dr. Ted A. Campbell and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley distinguished between essential doctrines on which agreement or consensus is critical and opinions about theology or church practices on which disagreement must be allowed. Though today few people join churches based on doctrinal commitments, once a person has joined a church it becomes important to know the historic teachings of that church's tradition. In Methodist Doctrine: The Essentials, Ted Campbell outlines historical doctrinal consensus in American Episcopal Methodist Churches in a comparative and ecumenical dialogue with the doctrinal inheritance of other major families of Christian tradition. In this way, the book shows both what Methodist churches historically teach in common with ecumenical Christianity and what is distinctive about the Methodist tradition in its various contemporary forms. Documents examined include The Twenty-Five Articles of Religion, The General Rules, Wesley's Standard Sermons and Explanatory Notes upon the New Testament, The Methodist Social Creed, and the Apostles' Creed.
Book Synopsis Hispanic Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists in Texas by : Paul Barton
Download or read book Hispanic Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists in Texas written by Paul Barton and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of how one can be both Hispanic and Protestant has perplexed Mexican Americans in Texas ever since Anglo-American Protestants began converting their Mexican Catholic neighbors early in the nineteenth century. Mexican-American Protestants have faced the double challenge of being a religious minority within the larger Mexican-American community and a cultural minority within their Protestant denominations. As they have negotiated and sought to reconcile these two worlds over nearly two centuries, los Protestantes have melded Anglo-American Protestantism with Mexican-American culture to create a truly indigenous, authentic, and empowering faith tradition in the Mexican-American community. This book presents the first comparative history of Hispanic Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists in Texas. Covering a broad sweep from the 1830s to the 1990s, Paul Barton examines how Mexican-American Protestant identities have formed and evolved as los Protestantes interacted with their two very different communities in the barrio and in the Protestant church. He looks at historical trends and events that affected Mexican-American Protestant identity at different periods and discusses why and how shifts in los Protestantes' sense of identity occurred. His research highlights the fact that while Protestantism has traditionally served to assimilate Mexican Americans into the dominant U.S. society, it has also been transformed into a vehicle for expressing and transmitting Hispanic culture and heritage by its Mexican-American adherents.

Book Synopsis Building for the New by : Paul F. McCleary
Download or read book Building for the New written by Paul F. McCleary and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book takes place in the poorest country in South America. In fact, in considering the Western Hemisphere, it ranks next to last, with only Haiti being poorer, yet it is a country rich in national resources. The book covers one of the most tenuous times in Bolivian history. While it is the story of a missionary family, the book provides unusual insight to the rapid change occurring at so many levels in the country. The book points to the 1952 revolution as the starting point of a vastly significant process of social and political transformation that has bought Bolivia to its present status. Bolivia has a history of political change occurring not at the ballot box but most frequently by a military coup. The ’52 revolution was like the jump start to a battery which, in this case, triggered the political awakening of the majority of indigenous communities long held in a semifeudal condition. The book draws out the many external influences which played a role in defining the outcome of the transition. Bolivia’s natural resources were a tempting prize from the early colonial period when gold and silver were the attractions for Spain. During World War II, the metals tin, zinc, and tungsten were important to the United States. More recently, for the time period covered by the book, it was the petroleum and forest products. The external influences were more than economic. The book covered the range from former Nazis to Cuban communists. The thread running through the book is about the life of a missionary family. It is the story of a young couple with three children who left the comfort and security of the US Midwest farming communities to serve Christ as missionaries to Bolivia. However, the book does much more. It reveals how these Americans adjust into what is a semi-hostile environment struggling to cast off its colonial past where 80 percent of the population was kept from participating in society by literacy voting laws. The book draws on sources as diverse as academic studies done as degree work by former missionaries, to declassed information from the State Department files. Events, both local and global, had their impact. Such political currents as those represented by Nazi Klaus Barbie and communist Che Guevara occurred in Bolivia. On the world scene, it ranged from Peron in Argentina to the assassination of President Kennedy in the U.S. While the book is about a missionary family, it so contextualizes them into the social, economic, and political situation in Bolivia, one comes away with a deeper appreciation for and understanding of those who dedicate their lives to the well-being of the world’s poorest and most marginalized.
