Book Synopsis Nación Genízara by : Moises Gonzales
Download or read book Nación Genízara written by Moises Gonzales and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nación Genízara examines the history, cultural evolution, and survival of the Genízaro people. The contributors to this volume cover topics including ethnogenesis, slavery, settlements, poetics, religion, gender, family history, and mestizo genetics. Fray Angélico Chávez defined Genízaro as the ethnic term given to indigenous people of mixed tribal origins living among the Hispano population in Spanish fashion. They entered colonial society as captives taken during wars with Utes, Apaches, Comanches, Kiowas, Navajos, and Pawnees. Genízaros comprised a third of the population by 1800. Many assimilated into Hispano and Pueblo society, but others in the land-grant communities maintained their identity through ritual, self-government, and kinship. Today the persistence of Genízaro identity blurs the lines of distinction between Native and Hispanic frameworks of race and cultural affiliation. This is the first study to focus exclusively on the detribalized Native experience of the Genízaro in New Mexico.

Book Synopsis LA HERENCIA DE EL ENCANTO by : RAÚL D. MONTOYA
Download or read book LA HERENCIA DE EL ENCANTO written by RAÚL D. MONTOYA and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Supplement to the Handbook of Middle American Indians, Volume 6 by : Barbara W. Edmonson
Download or read book Supplement to the Handbook of Middle American Indians, Volume 6 written by Barbara W. Edmonson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1981, UT Press began to issue supplemental volumes to the classic sixteen-volume work, Handbook of Middle American Indians. These supplements are intended to update scholarship in various areas and to cover topics of current interest. Supplements devoted to Archaeology, Linguistics, Literatures, Ethnohistory, and Epigraphy have appeared to date. In this Ethnology supplement, anthropologists who have carried out long-term fieldwork among indigenous people review the ethnographic literature in the various regions of Middle America and discuss the theoretical and methodological orientations that have framed the work of areal scholars over the last several decades. They examine how research agendas have developed in relationship to broader interests in the field and the ways in which the anthropology of the region has responded to the sociopolitical and economic policies of Mexico and Guatemala. Most importantly, they focus on the changing conditions of life of the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. This volume thus offers a comprehensive picture of both the indigenous populations and developments in the anthropology of the region over the last thirty years.

This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
