Book Synopsis The Right to Live in Health by : Daniel A. Rodríguez
Download or read book The Right to Live in Health written by Daniel A. Rodríguez and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel A. Rodriguez's history of a newly independent Cuba shaking off the U.S. occupation focuses on the intersection of public health and politics in Havana. While medical policies were often used to further American colonial power, in Cuba, Rodriguez argues, they evolved into important expressions of anticolonial nationalism as Cuba struggled to establish itself as a modern state. A younger generation of Cuban medical reformers, including physicians, patients, and officials, imagined disease as a kind of remnant of colonial rule. These new medical nationalists, as Rodriguez calls them, looked to medical science to guide Cuba toward what they envisioned as a healthy and independent future. Rodriguez describes how medicine and new public health projects infused republican Cuba's statecraft, powerfully shaping the lives of Havana's residents. He underscores how various stakeholders, including women and people of color, demanded robust government investment in quality medical care for all Cubans, a central national value that continues today. On a broader level, Rodriguez proposes that Latin America, at least as much as the United States and Europe, was an engine for the articulation of citizens' rights, including the right to health care, in the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis At the Heart of the Borderlands by : Cameron D. Jones
Download or read book At the Heart of the Borderlands written by Cameron D. Jones and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2023-04-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Heart of the Borderlands is the first book-length study of Africans and Afro-descendants in the frontiers of Spanish America. While people of African descent have formed part of most borderlands histories, this study recognizes and explains their critical contribution to the formation of frontier spaces. Lack of imperial control coupled with Spain’s desperation for settlers and soldiers in frontier areas facilitated the social mobility of Afro-descendants. This need allowed African descendants to become not just members of borderland societies but leaders of it as well. They were essential actors in helping to shape the limits of the Spanish empire. Africans and Afro-descendants built, opposed, and shaped Spanish hegemony in the borderlands, taking on roles that would have been impossible or difficult in colonial centers due to the socio-racial hierarchy of imperial policies and practices.

Book Synopsis Telara?a by : Rafael Vidarte Gonzlez
Download or read book Telara?a written by Rafael Vidarte Gonzlez and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Madrid on the move by : Vanesa Rodríguez-Galindo
Download or read book Madrid on the move written by Vanesa Rodríguez-Galindo and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madrid on the move illustrates print culture and the urban experience in nineteenth-century Spain. It provides a fresh account of modernity by looking beyond its canonical texts, artworks, and locations and explores what being modern meant to people in their daily lives. Rather than shifting the loci of modernity from Paris or London to Madrid, this book decentres the concept and explains the modern experience as part of a more fluid, global phenomenon. Meanings of the modern were not only dictated by linguistic authorities and urban technocrats; they were discussed, lived, and constructed on a daily basis. Cultural actors and audiences displayed an acute awareness of what being modern entailed and explored the links between the local and the global, two concepts and contexts that were being conceived and perceived as inseparable.
