Face à une ville qui se défait, l’ambition de l’animation socioculturelle auprès des jeunes est de produire dans ces territoires un bien vivre-ensemble selon un projet éducatif institutionnel. Des représentations sociales caractérisent trois modèles de ville s’imbriquant : une ville romantique, une ville éclatée et une ville socioculturelle. Trois modèles d’animation y correspondent : une animation socioéducative et culturelle, une animation prioritaire, une animation médiatrice. La problématique a trait à la dimension spatiale de l’animation des jeunes. Les rapports entretenus entre des animateurs et des jeunes reposent sur des représentations en matière de désorganisation et d’engagement dans la sphère publique. Nous présentons la ville de Bordeaux « réveillée » par un projet urbain en cours et l’évolution d’une association gestionnaire d’équipements socioculturels qui illustre la territorialisation de l’animation. Praticien chercheur, nous observons des pratiques d’animateurs sur le terrain et les rapports qu’ils engagent avec des jeunes dans des équipements et des espaces publics. L’enjeu d’une animation qui fait vivre une ville socioculturelle est celui d’une émancipation sociale reposant sur une autonomisation des citoyens au sein d’espaces publics critiques, au risque d’une régulation sociale susceptible d’induire la neutralisation d’une urbanité de confrontation et des rapports sociaux sous- jacents.

In this book, the author advances an empirically based theory relating media's most basic mode of presentation -- their symbol systems -- to common thought processes and to learning. Drawing on research in semiotics, cognition and cognitive development, psycholinguistics, and mass communication, the author offers a number of propositions concerning the particular kinds of mental processes required by, and the specific mental skills enhanced by, different symbol systems. He then describes a series of controlled experiments and field and cross-cultural studies designed to test these propositions. Based primarily on the symbol system elements of television and film, these studies illustrate under what circumstances and with what types of learners certain kinds of learning and mental skill development occur. These findings are incorporated into a general scheme of reciprocal interactions among symbol systems, learners' cognitions, and their mental activities; and the implications of these relationships for the design and use of instructional materials are explored.
