Book excerpt: Addressed to students of Mariology, Marian and Mariological Societies, to Rectors of Marian Shrines and to all interested in the future of Marian devotion in the Church, this work presents a comprehensive overview of the actual questions facing the study of Mary in the Church today. As a document coming from a Pontifical Academy, the sources are the writings of the great teachers of the Church, the texts of the liturgy, the ecumenical councils, the various dicasteries and commissions of the Holy See, and the episcopal conferences. Its purpose is to clarify several controversial matters and to point the way to future theological developments in our knowledge and appreciation of Mary, luminous icon of the Trinity, Mother of God and the Mother of us all.

Book Synopsis Jean-Claude Colin by : Justin Taylor
Download or read book Jean-Claude Colin written by Justin Taylor and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 1162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1830, at the age of forty, Jean-Claude Colin accepted the call of his colleagues to take charge of the Society of Mary (Marists). He had joined this project as a seminarian in Lyons, France, in 1816, along with Marcellin Champagnat, future founder of the Marist teaching brothers. Since ordination, he had been an assistant priest at Cerdon (photo below), preached revival missions in rural districts and been principal of a high school-seminary. Colin always insisted that he was only a temporary superior until someone more capable could take over. Yet, by the time he resigned in 1854, he had obtained papal approval of the priests' branch, established the Society firmly in France, especially in education, and sent fifteen expeditions of missionary priests and brothers to the remote and scattered islands of the southwest Pacific. There they planted the Catholic Church in New Zealand, Wallis and Futuna, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and New Caledonia. Between his resignation and his death in 1875, Colin wrote Constitutions for the priests and brothers of the Society of Mary and for the Marist sisters. He also left a rich spiritual teaching. For this achievement, the Society regards him, despite his reluctance, as its Founder.
Book Synopsis Handmaid of the Lord by : David N. Bell
Download or read book Handmaid of the Lord written by David N. Bell and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, David N. Bell explores what Cistercian writers and preachers have said about Mary from the time of the founding fathers of the Order to Armand-Jean de Rancé, who introduced the Cistercian Strict Observance and who died in 1700. This work is divided into three parts. The first part presents some selective background material on Mary that is necessary for understanding where the Cistercian writers are coming from and the sources and ideas they are using. The next eight chapters, the second part of the book, examine the Marian ideas of Cistercian writers from Bernard of Clairvaux to a number of visionaries, both male and female, who take us to the very end of the thirteenth century. There is then a gap of more than three centuries—the reasons are given at the end of chapter 12—before we arrive at the birth of Armand-Jean de Rancé in 1626. The final chapters—part 3 of the book—summarize the life of Rancé, examine the place of Mary at La Trappe, and present annotated translations of Rancé’s five conferences for three Marian feasts: the Nativity of Mary, the Annunciation, and the Assumption.

Book Synopsis Mary in the Plan of God and in the Communion of the Saints by : Alain Blancy
Download or read book Mary in the Plan of God and in the Communion of the Saints written by Alain Blancy and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mary the mother of Jesus Christ, has always been a stumbling block to understanding among divided Christians. Many Protestants have believed that the Marian devotions practiced by Catholics detract from the centrality of Jesus himself. To Catholics, the dilution of Mary's role in the history of salvation by Protestants has come across as harsh and even unscriptural." "The Dombes Group in south cental France, comprised of Roman Catholic and Reformed scholars, has taken a fresh look at the place of Mary in Christian faith and concluded that she has been more the victim than the cause of discord. The participants found themselves "at one" in their acceptance of the virginal conception and motherhood of Mary. At the same time, the group reminded their coreligionists of areas where both sides still need to be "converted" to authentic Christianity. While warning against the excesses of goddess-theology, they nevertheless concluded that Mary exemplifies "the decisive and perfect example of the Yes which Christian faith must utter.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
