Book Synopsis The Culture and Development Manifesto by : Robert Klitgaard
Download or read book The Culture and Development Manifesto written by Robert Klitgaard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With fascinating examples from around the world, this inspiring "manifesto" shows how to account for cultural diversity in reshaping economic and political development. Around the world, the realities of underdevelopment are harsh and galling, and current strategies are not working well enough or quickly enough. One reason, Robert Klitgaard argues in this pathbreaking book, is that the strategies don't take cultural diversity into account. Gently but firmly, he shows how and why anthropology and cultural studies have not been effectively applied. But it need not be so. The Culture and Development Manifesto shows how to mobilize knowledge from and for the disadvantaged, the indigenous, and the voiceless. Looking beyond interactions between cultural contexts and particular projects, Klitgaard seeks new ways to think about goals, new kinds of alternatives, new and perhaps hybrid ways to implement or resist, and, as a result, new kinds of politics. In short, this remarkable book fundamentally re-envisions what development policy can be.
Book Synopsis The History of Development by : Gilbert Rist
Download or read book The History of Development written by Gilbert Rist and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark text, Gilbert Rist provides a comprehensive and compelling overview of what the idea of development has meant throughout history. He traces it from its origins in the Western view of history, through the early stages of the world system, the rise of US hegemony, and the supposed triumph of third-worldism, through to new concerns about the environment and globalization. Assessing possible postdevelopment models and considering the ecological dimensions of development, Rist contemplates the ways forward. Throughout, he argues persuasively that development has been no more than a collective delusion, which in reality has resulted only in widening market relations, whatever the intentions of its advocates. A classic development text written by one of the leaders of postdevelopment theory.
Book Synopsis Culture, International Transactions and the Anthropocene by : Lourdes Arizpe Schlosser
Download or read book Culture, International Transactions and the Anthropocene written by Lourdes Arizpe Schlosser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how global transactions have been progressively conducted and negotiated in the last 25 years. Achieving a new understanding of sustainability transition in the Anthropocene requires a deeper analysis on culture. The development of new positions of international institutions, national governments, scientific organizations, private fora and civil society movements on culture and nature shows how global transactions must take place in a rapidly transforming world. In her book the author provides a multi-situated ethnography of live debates on culture, global environmental change, development and diversity directly recorded by the author as a participating and decision-making anthropologist from 1988 to 2016. She examines the politicization and internationalization of culture by recognizing, negotiating and diversifying views on cultures and re-thinking culture in the Anthropocene. The merging of science and policy in taking up cultural and natural challenges in the Anthropocene is discussed.
Book Synopsis Ethics and the Market by : Betsy Jane Clary
Download or read book Ethics and the Market written by Betsy Jane Clary and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising cutting-edge work on the state of social economics today, this theoretically diverse book includes strong emphasis on the role of ethics, morality, identity, and society in economic theorizing. Much existing economic theory overlooks ethics. Rather than situating the market and values at separate extremes of a continuum, Ethics and the Market contends that the two are necessarily and intimately related. This volume brings together some of the best work in the social economics tradition, with strong contributions and pedagogy, and a cross-national blend of economics, philosophy, and policy. The contributors embed the economic within the social, rather than viewing 'the economy' and 'society' as separable spheres of life activity, and in so doing, three key themes are illuminated, corresponding to the volume's tripartite structure: Morality and Markets Redefining the Boundaries of Economics Social Economics in Transition. Ethics and the Market illuminates the diverse and dynamic theoretical approaches that are employed in social economics, reflecting on their continuously evolving relationship with neoclassical economics. Taking an innovative approach, this integrative book challenges traditional ways of thinking, and will prove vital reading for students and academics in the fields of Economics, Sociology, Gender Studies, and Public Policy.
Book Synopsis Anthropology and Development by : Jean-Pierre Oliver De-Sardan
Download or read book Anthropology and Development written by Jean-Pierre Oliver De-Sardan and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book re-establishes the relevance of mainstream anthropological (and sociological) approaches to development processes and simultaneously recognizes that contemporary development ought to be anthropology‘s principal area of study. Professor de Sardan argues for a socio-anthropology of change and development that is a deeply empirical, multidimensional, diachronic study of social groups and their interactions. The Introduction provides a thought-provoking examination of the principal new approaches that have emerged in the discipline during the 1990s. Part I then makes clear the complexity of social change and development, and the ways in which socio-anthropology can measure up to the challenge of this complexity. Part II looks more closely at some of the leading variables involved in the development process, including relations of production; the logics of social action; the nature of knowledge; forms of mediation; and ‘political‘ strategies.
Book Synopsis What is a Fair International Society? by : Emmanuelle Tourme Jouannet
Download or read book What is a Fair International Society? written by Emmanuelle Tourme Jouannet and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's world is post-colonial and post-Cold War. These twin characteristics explain why international society is also riddled with the two major forms of injustice which Nancy Fraser identified as afflicting national societies. First, the economic and social disparities between states caused outcry in the 1950s when the first steps were taken towards decolonisation. These inequalities, to which a number of emerging states now contribute, are still glaring and still pose the problem of the gap between formal equality and true equality. Second, international society is increasingly confronted with culture- and identity-related claims, stretching the dividing line between equality and difference. The less-favoured states, those that feel stigmatised, but also native peoples, ethnic groups, minorities and women now aspire to both legal recognition of their equal dignity and the protection of their identities and cultures. Some even seek reparation for injustices arising from the past violation of their identities and the confiscation of their property or land. In answer to these two forms of claim, the subjects of international society have come up with two types of remedy encapsulated in legal rules: the law of development and the law of recognition. These two sets of rights are neither wholly autonomous and individualised branches of law nor formalised sets of rules. They are imperfect and have their dark side. Yet they can be seen as the first milestones towards what might become a fairer international society; one that is both equitable (as an answer to socio-economic injustice) and decent (as an answer to cultural injustice). This book explores this evolution in international society, setting it in historical perspective and examining its presuppositions and implications.
Book Synopsis Culture, Diversity and Heritage: Major Studies by : Lourdes Arizpe
Download or read book Culture, Diversity and Heritage: Major Studies written by Lourdes Arizpe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-27 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The texts presented in this book trace the rise of culture as a major concern for development, international diplomacy, sustainability and national politics over the past two decades. As a major participant in anthropological field research, advocate for cultural freedom and decision-maker in international programs on culture, the author gives a firsthand account of the trade-offs, the contradictions and the management of consensus in these fields. She argues that the constitutive, functional and instrumental aspects of cultural narratives call for a more in-depth understanding of knowledge, leading to cultural and social sustainability in the framework of a "new worlding". Many of the texts gathered here were presented at the United Nations General Assembly and other high-level international meetings. Most of the texts are unpublished; some were first published in Spanish and are now available in English for the first time.
Book Synopsis Political Economy for Human Rights by : Manuel Couret Branco
Download or read book Political Economy for Human Rights written by Manuel Couret Branco and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-05 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over time there has been a miscommunication between mainstream economics and human rights that has paved the way to a justificatory ideology that validates the submission of human rights to the logic of market capitalism. This book shows how the discourse of mainstream economics is intrinsically opposed to the strengthening of human rights and outlines the principles upon which a human rights-based political economy can be built. Considering a variety of recognized human rights, such as the right to water and sanitation, the right to social security, the right to work, cultural freedom and democracy, this book describes how mainstream economics theory conflicts with these rights and explores alternative modes of thinking that incorporate human rights concerns into economics. Moreover, the book also reflects on the teaching of political economy for human rights. It sets out that a political economy favourable to human rights must be pluralist, interdisciplinary, participatory, de-commodified, non-utilitarian and non-consequentialist. The author proposes that it must not only assume the performative character of economics but also, and especially, its transformative purpose. Political Economy for Human Rights will offer students, academics, activists and policy makers useful tools to understand some of the main contradictions of contemporary societies and new paths leading to a more just and fraternal world. It will also be of great interest to the general public concerned with human rights and economic issues.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Post-adjustment by : Hakim Ben Hammouda
Download or read book The Political Economy of Post-adjustment written by Hakim Ben Hammouda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Hammouda's text focuses on modernization experiences in the South which, in the 80s had reached their limits, with the adoption of structural adjustment programmes in most countries. Yet, such Washington Consensus inspired programmes met difficulties in initiating new growth dynamics in these countries and in improving their international insertion. Hence, a new era termed post-adjustment by the author has been ushered in, one which is characterized by a decline of structural adjustment programmes and through dynamic and plural research, is striving to introduce new theoretical practices and development strategies. This book is a contribution to such debate.

Book Synopsis La quête anthropologique du droit by : Christoph Eberhard
Download or read book La quête anthropologique du droit written by Christoph Eberhard and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2006 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
