Book excerpt: This book presents for the first time, the scattered novel results that have been achieved in very recent years in study on various thin calcium phosphate coatings produced by very diverse techniques. The comparison of thin calcium phosphate coatings with the thick plasma-sprayed ones is also included in the book. Readers will find a comprehensive book reviewing the state-of-the-art of the field with critical assessment of the achievements of the different preparation techniques.

Book excerpt: " This book provides the prosthodontist and oral surgeon for the first time with a safe, predictable, and scientifically proven method for permanently anchoring artificial tooth abutments in the jawbones. It combines the osseointegration research results of biologists, physicists, bioengineers, oral surgeons, and prosthodontists to demonstrate step-by-step how to achieve long-term osseointegration of dental implants" -- Amazon.

Book excerpt: In the past, osseointegration was regarded to be a mode of implant anchorage that simulated a simple wound healing phenomenon. Today, we have evidence that osseointegration is, in fact, a foreign body reaction that involves an immunologically derived bony demarcation of an implant to shield it off from the tissues. Marginal bone resorption around an oral implant cannot be properly understood without realizing the foreign body nature of the implant itself. Whereas the immunological response as such is positive for implant longevity, adverse immunological reactions may cause marginal bone loss in combination with combined factors. Combined factors include the hardware, clinical handling as well as patient characteristics that, even if each one of these factors only produce subliminal trauma, when acting together they may result in loss of marginal bone. The role of bacteria in the process of marginal bone loss is smaller than previously believed due to combined defense mechanisms of inflammation and immunological reactions, but if the defense is failing we may see bacterially induced marginal bone loss as well. However, problems with loss of marginal bone threatening implant survival remains relatively uncommon; we have today 10 years of clinical documentation of five different types of implant displaying a failure rate in the range of only 1 to 4 %.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During their service life, most biomaterials and medical implants are vulnerable to tribological damage. In addition, the environments in which they are placed are often corrosive. The combination of triobology, corrosion and the biological environment has been named ‘bio-tribocorrosion’. Understanding this complex phenomenon is critical to improving the design and service life of medical implants. This important book reviews recent key research in this area. After an introduction to the topography of bio-tribocorrosion, Part one discusses different types of tribocorrosion including fatigue-corrosion, fretting-corrosion, wear-corrosion and abrasion-corrosion. The book also discusses the prediction of wear in medical devices. Part two looks at biological effects on tribocorrosion processes, including how proteins interact with material surfaces and the evolution of surface changes due to bio-tribocorrosion resulting from biofilms and passive films. Part three reviews the issue of bio-tribocorrosion in clinical practice, including dental applications and joint replacement as well the use of coatings and test methods for bio-tribocorrosion. With its international team of contributors, Bio-tribocorrosion in biomaterials and medical implants is a standard reference for those researching and developing medical devices as well as clinicians in such areas as dentistry and orthopaedic surgery. Reviews recent research in bio-tribocorrosion and its role in improving the design and service life of medical implants Discusses types of bio-tribocorrosion including fatigue and wear corrosion Examines biological effects on bio-tribocorrosion processes including interaction of proteins with metal surfaces

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this two-volume work is osseo integration. It discusses the use of glue to attach bony tissue as well as the use of the absence of biochemical interactions between some oxide ceramics (particularly pure A1203 ceramic) and the adjacent tissue. This book also demonstrates the possibility of controlling the interface remodelling by the stresses and strains created by the insertion of the implant. Written in a concise, easy-to-read format, this text covers the use of implants in orthopedics, maxillo-facial surgery, and dentistry. All those involved with bioengineering, orthopedics, maxillo-facial surgery, dentistry, and biomechanics will find this reference to be of particular interest.
