La apertura de las economías, el desarrollo de los países emergentes y las ventajas de la especialización, junto con el desarrollo tecnológico y el consiguiente abaratamiento de los costes logísticos y organizativos, han permitido que diferentes partes de los productos o servicios puedan producirse en múltiples países, obteniéndose el producto final tras múltiples intercambios comerciales. En la articulación de esas interdependencias juegan un papel destacado las empresas que lideran los procesos de globalización de las cadenas de producción, con frecuencia presentes en muchos países. Las compañías multinacionales han sacado fuera de su perímetro tareas que antes desarrollaban dentro de él, desempeñando a la vez un papel muy destacado en el desarrollo de mercados con proveedores y clientes y en la coordinación de las actividades de las cadenas de valor que lideran. Esta monografía estudia la posición de la economía española en este escenario de las cadenas de valor globales, combinando varias aproximaciones, tanto desde una perspectiva conceptual como empírica. Así, se analizan los problemas desde una perspectiva agregada y sectorial y de empresa. Un rasgo básico del estudio es el aprovechamiento a fondo de la información estadística ofrecida por las nuevas bases input-output internacionales y el análisis comparativo de las diferencias sectoriales más relevantes.

Book excerpt: This book revisits the debate over the new international division of labour (NIDL) that dominated discussions in international political economy and development studies until the early 1990s. It submits that a revised NIDL thesis can shed light on the specificities of capitalist development in various parts of the world today. Taken together, the contributions amount to a novel value-theoretical approach to understanding the NIDL. This rests upon the distinction between the global economic content that determines the constitution and dynamics of the NIDL and the evolving national political forms that mediate its development. More specifically, the authors argue that uneven development is an expression of the underlying essential unity of the production of relative surplus-value on a world scale. They substantiate and illustrate this argument through several international case studies, including Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Ireland, South Korea, Spain and Venezuela.
