Book excerpt: In many forms of discourse, specific parts of the human anatomy may signify the whole body/person. In this volume, scholars from a variety of historical and cultural studies disciplines examine scientific, medical, popular, and literary texts, paying special attention to the different strategies employed in order to establish authority over the body through the management of a single part. By considering body parts that are usually ignored by scholars, these essays render the idea of a single, coherent body untenable by demonstrating that the body is not a transhistorical entity, but rather, deeply fragmented and fundamentally situated in a number of different contexts.

This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the dynamic relationship between art and subjective consciousness, following a phenomenological, pragmatist and enactive approach. It brings out a new approach to the role of the body in art, not as a speculative object or symbolic material but as the living source of the imaginary. It contains theoretical contributions and case studies taken from various artistic practices (visual art, theatre, literature and music), Western and Eastern, the latter concerning China, India and Japan. These contributions allow us to nourish the debate on embodied cognition and aesthetics, using theory–philosophy, art history, neuroscience–and the authors’ personal experience as artists or spectators. According to the Husserlian method of “reduction” and pragmatist introspection, they postulate that listening to bodily sensations–cramps, heartbeats, impulsive movements, eye orientation–can unravel the thread of subconscious experience, both active and affective, that emerge in the encounter between a subject and an artwork, an encounter which, following John Dewey, we deem to be a case study for life in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This superbly illustrated book covers all aspects of liposuction: anatomy, pathology, biochemistry, preoperative care, equipment, the full range of procedures, complications, postoperative care, outcomes, lipedema, and medical legal aspects. Compared with the successful first edition, the text has been extensively updated and many additional chapters included, with particular attention to recently introduced techniques. While new technology helps to improve results, experience, care, and skill on the part of the cosmetic surgeon are essential if optimal results satisfactory to the patient are to be achieved. The contributors to this book have expended much time and effort to present the cosmetic and plastic surgeon with as much information as possible on the techniques and uses of liposuction for the purposes of cosmetic and non-cosmetic surgery. Liposuction: Principles and Practice will be of value for residents and fellows and for practicing and highly experienced surgeons in plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, general surgery, and other subspecialties.
