Book Synopsis The Image of Celestina by : Enrique Fernández
Download or read book The Image of Celestina written by Enrique Fernández and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La Celestina, a Spanish literary masterpiece second only in importance to Don Quixote in Spanish literature, has been shaped by the inclusion of images from its very first edition in 1499. The subsequent five centuries were punctuated by many illustrated editions; imaginary portraits of the eponymous procuress Celestina by painters such as Murillo, Goya, and Picasso; and, more recently, screen and stage adaptations. Celestina became the prototype from which later representations of procuresses and bawds derived. The Image of Celestina sheds light on the visual culture that developed around La Celestina, including paintings, illustrations, and advertisements. Enrique Fernández examines La Celestina as a mixed-media text, incorporating methods from disciplines such as art history and women’s and cinema studies, and considers a variety of images including promotional posters, lobby pictures, and playbills of theatrical and cinematic adaptations of the book. Using a visual studies approach, The Image of Celestina ultimately illuminates the culture of Celestina, a mythical figure, who surpasses the literary text in which she originated.

Book Synopsis Una patria allá lejos en el pasado by : César Andrés Núñez
Download or read book Una patria allá lejos en el pasado written by César Andrés Núñez and published by El Colegio de Mexico AC. This book was released on 2011-05-20 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Goya, Chronicler of War : the Disasters and War Photography by : Francisco Goya
Download or read book Goya, Chronicler of War : the Disasters and War Photography written by Francisco Goya and published by Bright Sparks. This book was released on 2009 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the prints of The Disasters Goya compliled a collection of the horrors of the Spanish Peninsular War again Napoleon's troops (1808-14). But his condemnation is impartial, alternately critical of the cruelty on both sides, and this is why his etchings have become a pacifist discourse that is timeless in its scope. These images are the artist's first banging on the table in protest, and they speak directly to our consciences. The way Goya represented war is far removed from any idea of heroism and has few precedents in the history of art. His vehemence is certainly unique, however, Goya placed his genius in the service of a cause which had no impact on the society of his time. His opinions, full of intelligent doubts and mixed feelings, remained etched on those prints like a condemnation of war. The object of this exhibition is to project Goya's condemnation forward to our time. And his indignation has been best captured by certain war photographers. Through their dangerous work many of them have constructed a discourse which echoes Goya's view as applied to our own shameful conflicts.' ... p. 17
Book Synopsis La canción de Odette by : René Avilés Fabila
Download or read book La canción de Odette written by René Avilés Fabila and published by Editorial Ink. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Theatre Censorship in Spain, 19311985 by : Catherine O'Leary
Download or read book Theatre Censorship in Spain, 19311985 written by Catherine O'Leary and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive study of the impact of censorship on theatre in twentieth-century Spain. It draws on extensive archival evidence, vivid personal testimonies and in-depth analysis of legislation to document the different kinds of theatre censorship practised during the Second Republic (1931–6), the civil war (1936–9), the Franco dictatorship (1939–75) and the transition to democracy (1975–85). Changes in criteria, administrative structures and personnel from these periods are traced in relation to wider political, social and cultural developments, and the responses of playwrights, directors and companies are explored. With a focus on censorship, new light is cast on particular theatremakers and their work, the conditions in which all kinds of theatre were produced, the construction of genres and canons, as well as on broader cultural history and changing ideological climate – all of which are linked to reflections on the nature of censorship and the relationship between culture and the state.
Book Synopsis The Islamic Design Module in Latin America by : John F. Moffitt
Download or read book The Islamic Design Module in Latin America written by John F. Moffitt and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-07-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the distinctive look of Hispanic architecture. Its triangulate format, originated in Islamic Spain, was based on workshop techniques once used by journeyman designers and simple artisans. Spain was the only European transatlantic colonial power to have once been occupied by Islamic overlords. Spain's conquistadors took their traditional building methods to Latin America. Formal analyses of the facades of various Latin American churches reveal them to reiterate procedures worked out in Andalusia by Islamic builders in the ninth and tenth centuries. Though widely separated by time and place, both share a proportionate system determining abstract ratios; in both cases, this regulating format was derived from manipulations of the Pythagorean triangles. This "trazado regulador" is only expressed in ratios, with no numbers, and is illustrated here with 85 visual examples including measured drawings of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and medieval European prototypes. Grounded in historical and physical data, the research is partially drawn from four practical builders' manuals: two seventeenth-century Spanish ones and two Mexican ones from ca. 1640 and 1800. In an appendix, Viollet-le-Duc (a major nineteenth-century architect) explains architectural proportionality and the design function of the Pythagorean Triangle.
