Book Synopsis Topophrenia by : Robert T. Tally, Jr.
Download or read book Topophrenia written by Robert T. Tally, Jr. and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is our place in the world, and how do we inhabit, understand, and represent this place to others? Topophrenia gathers essays by Robert Tally that explore the relationship between space, place, and mapping, on the one hand, and literary criticism, history, and theory on the other. The book provides an introduction to spatial literary studies, exploring in detail the theory and practice of geocriticism, literary cartography, and the spatial humanities more generally. The spatial anxiety of disorientation and the need to know one's location, even if only subconsciously, is a deeply felt and shared human experience. Building on Yi Fu Tuan's "topophilia" (or love of place), Tally instead considers the notion of "topophrenia" as a simultaneous sense of place-consciousness coupled with a feeling of disorder, anxiety, and "dis-ease." He argues that no effective geography could be complete without also incorporating an awareness of the lonely, loathsome, or frightening spaces that condition our understanding of that space. Tally considers the tension between the objective ordering of a space and the subjective ways in which narrative worlds are constructed. Narrative maps present a way of understanding that seems realistic but is completely figurative. So how can these maps be used to not only understand the real world but also to put up an alternative vision of what that world might otherwise be? From Tolkien to Cervantes, Borges to More, Topophrenia provides a clear and compelling explanation of how geocriticism, the spatial humanities, and literary cartography help us to narrate, represent, and understand our place in a constantly changing world.

Download or read book Blaise Cendrars written by Eric Robertson and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new account of the life and work of innovative, pseudonymous French poet, novelist, essayist, and film writer Blaise Cendrars. In 1912 the young Frédéric-Louis Sauser arrived in France, carrying an experimental poem and a new identity. Blaise Cendrars was born. Over the next half-century, Cendrars wrote innovative poems, novels, essays, film scripts, and autobiographical prose. His groundbreaking books and collaborations with artists such as Sonia Delaunay and Fernand Léger remain astonishingly modern today. Cendrars’s writings reflect his insatiable curiosity, his vast knowledge, which was largely self-taught, and his love of everyday life. In this new account, Eric Robertson examines Cendrars’s work against a turbulent historical background and reassesses his contribution to twentieth-century literature. Robertson shows how Cendrars is as relevant today as ever and deserves a wider readership in the English-speaking world.
Book Synopsis Subterranean Space in Contemporary Mexico City Literature by : Liesbeth François
Download or read book Subterranean Space in Contemporary Mexico City Literature written by Liesbeth François and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the role of subterranean spaces in literary works about Mexico City. It analyzes how underground spaces such as the subway, the sewage system, tunnels, crypts, and the subsoil itself relate to the whole of the city in a body of works published after 1985, the year of the deadliest earthquake in the capital’s history. The texts belong to the most important genres in urban literature (the novel, the short story, and the crónica) and demonstrate the crucial role played by the underground in contemporary imaginings of the megalopolis, as it condenses and confronts the tensions that run through them. This central idea is developed through four analytical chapters focusing on the political, ecological, historical, and aesthetic dimension of subterranean imaginaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While entailing a subversive re-vision of colonial histories, geographies, and subjectivities, the (post)colonial condition has unleashed a chain of movements, relocations, and re-writings that interrogate the globalized and neoliberal society. Ethnic, “racial”, religious, gendered, and sexual identities have been called into question, and requested to (re)define, name, and re-name themselves, to find new ways to tell their stories/histories. The very term “postcolonial” has triggered well-known controversial debates: its adoption is significant of a cultural politics involving the colonial past, controversial crisis in the present, and an open perspective toward alternative futures. Confronting literature and the arts from a postcolonial perspective is a critical and political task involving theories and cultural productions crossing barriers amongst fields of knowledge. The essays gathered here discuss postcolonialism as a transdisciplinary field of passages that negotiate among diverse yet interrelated cultural fields.

This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the notion that Central American literature is a marginal space within Latin American literary and world literary production, this collection positions and discusses Central American literature within the recently revived debates on world literature. This groundbreaking volume draws on new scholarship on global, transnational, postcolonial, translational, and sociological perspectives on the region's literature, expanding and challenging these debates by focusing on the heterogenous literatures of Central America and its diasporas. Book Synopsis Spatiality at the Periphery in European Literatures and Visual Arts by : Kathryn Everly
Download or read book Spatiality at the Periphery in European Literatures and Visual Arts written by Kathryn Everly and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatiality at the Periphery in European Literatures and Visual Arts analyzes the impact migrations, both internal and external, have on Europe’s literary and visual representations in the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. The volume aims to subvert a centripetal reading of European cultural production by including peripheral thinkers, writers, and visual artists operating in transcultural contexts. The essays highlight and investigate the fertile artistic discourses generated in the spatial peripheries outside of Europe or its inner peripheries. The volume addresses the need for geocritical readings that overcome the engrained dichotomy of centers-peripheries. By doing so, the book brings a more nuanced approach to national literatures and proposes the idea of “contact zones of imaginative interaction”.
Book Synopsis Francophone Literature as World Literature by : Christian Moraru
Download or read book Francophone Literature as World Literature written by Christian Moraru and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francophone Literature as World Literature examines French-language works from a range of global traditions and shows how these literary practices draw individuals, communities, and their cultures and idioms into a planetary web of tension and cross-fertilization. The Francophone corpus under scrutiny here comes about in the evolving, markedly relational context provided by these processes and their developments during and after the French empire. The 15 chapters of this collection delve into key aspects, moments, and sites of the literature flourishing throughout the francosphere after World War II and especially since the 1980s, from the French Hexagon to the Caribbean and India, and from Québec to the Maghreb and Romania. Understood and practiced as World Literature, Francophone literature claims--with particular force in the wake of the littérature-monde debate--its place in a more democratic world republic of letters, where writers, critics, publishers, and audiences are no longer beholden to traditional centers of cultural authority.

Book Synopsis Spatial Literary Studies in China by : Ying Fang
Download or read book Spatial Literary Studies in China written by Ying Fang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatial Literary Studies in China explores the range of vibrant and innovative research being done in China today. Chinese scholars have been exploring spatially oriented literary criticism in two different and mutually reinforcing directions: the first has focused on the study of Western literature, especially U.S. and European texts and theory, and the second has examined Chinese cultures, texts, and spaces. This collection of essays demonstrates Chinese scholars’ insightful interpretation, evaluation, and innovative application of international spatial analyses, theories, and methodologies, as well as their inspiring exploration and reconstruction of distinctively Chinese critical and theoretical discourses. For the first time in English, the essays in this volume demonstrate the vitality of literary geography, geocriticism, and the spatial humanities in China in the twenty-first century.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
