Book Synopsis Assessing Mental Health and Psychosocial Needs and Resources by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Assessing Mental Health and Psychosocial Needs and Resources written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) is a term used to describe a wide range of actions that address social, psychological and psychiatric problems that are either pre-existing or emergency-induced. These actions are carried out in highly different contexts by organizations and people with different professional backgrounds, in different sectors and with different types of resources. All these different actors--and their donors--need practical assessments leading to recommendations that can be used immediately to improve people's mental health and well-being. Although a range of assessment tools exist, what has been missing is an overall approach that clarifies when to use which tool for what purpose. This document offers an approach to assessment that should help you review information that is already available and only collect new data that will be of practical use, depending on your capacity and the phase of the humanitarian crisis. This document is rooted in two policy documents, the IASC Reference Group s (2010) "Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Humanitarian Emergencies: What Should Humanitarian Health Actors Know?" and the "Sphere Handbook's Standard on Mental Health" (Sphere Project, 2011). It is written primarily for public health actors. As the social determinants of mental health and psychosocial problems occur across sectors, half of the tools in the accompanying toolkit cover MHPSS assessment issues relevant to other sectors as well as the health sector.

Book Synopsis The Killing of Karen Silkwood by : Richard Rashke
Download or read book The Killing of Karen Silkwood written by Richard Rashke and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 13, 1974, Karen Silkwood was driving on a deserted Oklahoma highway when her car crashed into a cement wall and she was killed. On the seat next to her were doctored quality-control negatives showing that her employer, Kerr-McGee, was manufacturing defective fuel rods filled with plutonium. She had recently discovered that more than forty pounds of plutonium were missing from the Kerr-McGee plant. Forty years later, her death is still steeped in mystery. Did she fall asleep before the accident, or did someone force her off the road? And what happened to the missing plutonium? The Killing of Karen Silkwood meticulously lays out the facts and encourages the readers to decide. Updated with the author’s chilling new introduction that discusses the similarities with Edward Snowden’s recent revelations, Silkwood’s story is as relevant today as it was forty years ago. For this updated edition, the author has added the latest information as to what happened to the various people involved in the Silkwood case and news of the lasting effects of this underreported piece of the history of the antinuclear movement.
Download or read book Grand Designs written by Charles Craypo and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late 1970s through the early 1990s, plant closings, bitter labor disputes, and manufacturing relocations profoundly and often disastrously influenced the lives of individuals, organizations, and municipalities in the Midwest. This volume tells the stories implicit in that process. Beyond documenting the damage that has been done, Grand Designs articulates the conditions under which local labor-community coalitions can win important victories. If they are adequately informed and organized, such coalitions can play a crucial part in revising the terms of the national debate over public policy on labor and economic issues.
Download or read book Building an Emergency Plan written by and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2000-02-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building an Emergency Plan provides a step-by-step guide that a cultural institution can follow to develop its own emergency preparedness and response strategy. This workbook is divided into three parts that address the three groups generally responsible for developing and implementing emergency procedures—institution directors, emergency preparedness managers, and departmental team leaders—and discuss the role each should play in devising and maintaining an effective emergency plan. Several chapters detail the practical aspects of communication, training, and forming teams to handle the safety of staff and visitors, collections, buildings, and records. Emergencies covered include natural events such as earthquakes or floods, as well as human-caused emergencies, such as fires that occur during renovation. Examples from the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, the Museo de Arte Popular Americano in Chile, the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, and the Seattle Art Museum show how cultural institutions have prepared for emergencies relevant to their sites, collections, and regions.
