Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text comprehensively covers the analysis, enzymology, physiology and genetics of valuable natural products used in the food industry that are attractive targets for biotechnological production. The focus is on the recent advances made to achieve this goal. This unique work is the first book to focus on biotechnological production of important natural products in food additives, fragrances and flavorings, and other bioactive compounds in food. The chapters offer a deep insight into modern research and the development of low molecular weight natural products. Biotechnology of Natural Products covers products in the Phenolic, Terpenoid, and Alkaloid categories, providing a full overview of the biotechnology of food additives and other low molecular weight natural products. Gene clustering and the evolution of pathways are covered, as well as future perspectives on the topic. Due to limited oil resources and increasing consumer demand for naturalness, bioprocesses are increasingly needed to meet these requirements. Novel sophisticated technologies have facilitated the elucidation of new chemical molecules, their biosynthetic pathways and biological functions. This book provides researchers with a full overview of the technologies and processes involved in the biotechnology of natural products.

This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Global Community Meeting on the FAO GM Foods Platform, held in September 2019, many participants expressed the strong need for a set of impartial and science-based communication materials that would address the communication challenges at a national level around food biotechnologies. To address this need, FAO, in collaboration with Kenya’s National Biosafety Authority and scientific and consumer education/communication experts, initiated the process of developing a communication toolkit on food biotechnologies. The toolkit is to be used by governmental agencies that assess the safety of foods derived from biotechnologies to better communicate with the general public. The toolkit will contain a series of guiding documents with various sample materials. The target users of the toolkit itself are the food safety and biosafety competent authorities in the government sector, whereas the sample materials are for the general public.A step-by-step approach has been planned to develop the sample materials with the first steps being the analysis of existing consumer education and communication materials worldwide, the identification of gaps in the information that is needed for consumers to gain a better understanding, and the selection of consumer education and communication materials to be used as a basis to develop sample materials. This document summarizes these initial steps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnology has not stood still since 1991 when the first edition of Biotechnology - The Science and the Business was published. It was the first book to treat the science and business of technology as an integrated subject and was well received by both students and business professionals. All chapters in this second edition have been updated and revised and some new chapters have been introduced, including one on the use of molecular genetic techniques in forensic science. Experts in the field discuss a range of biotechnologies, including pesticides, the flavor and fragrance industry, oil production, fermentation and protein engineering. On the business side, subjects include managing, financing, and regulation of biotechnology. Some knowledge of the science behind the technologies is assumed, as well as a layperson's view of buying and selling. As with the first edition, it is expected that this book will be of interest to biotechnology undergraduates, postgraduates and those working in the industry, along with students of business, economics, intellectual property law and communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional innovation systems, Jorge Niosi shows, are evolutionary complex systems in which each group of agents reacts to the behaviour of others as well as to public policy incentives. Canada's Regional Innovation System finds that Canada's biotechnology capabilities are widely distributed but solidly planted in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, with smaller centres in Calgary and Edmonton. However, the specific institutional structures (innovative firms, research universities, and public laboratories) of regional systems vary from one industry to another and evolve through time. While aerospace and aircraft form two poles in Montreal and Toronto, Ottawa is Canada's centre for semiconductor and telecommunication innovation. Niosi explores how these regional configurations are shaped by national and provincial public policy incentives. The study is based on patent and company information as well as aggregate figures from Statistics Canada and other sources.

This volume contains 68 selected papers organized into seven parts. Part I deals with cell wall degradation and biopulping. It includes papers such as energy savings in biomechanical pumping, and biological degradation and delignification of rice straw. Part II on the enzyme and fungal treatment of pulps presents studies on the improvement of pulp properties by treatment with enzymes or with whole cells. Part III reports on research on new biological treatments for wastewaters produced by the created by the pulp and paper industry. Part IV discusses the conversion of pulping and papermaking byproducts to more valuable products via fermentation. Parts V and VI are devoted to fundamental studies on lignin biodegradation, and on cellulose and hemicellulose biodegradation, respectively. Part VII focuses on molecular genetics research on lignocelluloses-degrading microorganisms.
